This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new definition of capacity-building is evolving--one tha t is veering away from conventional ideas of organizational engineering . As it encompasses the broad environment or system in which social changes occur, capacitybuilding has become more complex, yet also more rewarding . Today, some of the buzzwords are empowerment, social capital, enabling environment. Moreover, culture, values and power rela tions that influence and motivate organizations and individuals are gaining more attention. There is respect and even appreciation now for informal patterns of personal and culture-bound organizational behavior- the unwritten rules of the game, so to speak. As well, there is the urge to complement, not replace, indigenous ha bits and practices. All of these are progressively coalescing into a body of concepts called capacity development.

Book Synopsis Harnessing Markets for Biodiversity by : Dan Biller
Download or read book Harnessing Markets for Biodiversity written by Dan Biller and published by OECD. This book was released on 2003-06-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments and the business sector are increasingly recognising the potential of biodiversity products and services; markets which can help to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity. Some are already being profitably marketed, but private markets also need to be supported by appropriate public policies. This publication provides a conceptual framework to help identify and promote the use of markets in the biodiversity policy arena, and draws on the findings of a joint OECD/World Bank workshop held in Paris in January 2001. It discusses the concept of 'public goods' and considers four examples of emerging markets: organic agriculture; sustainable forestry; non-timber forest products, such as natural cosmetics and herbal medicines; and genetic resources.
