Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about a remarkable Lakeland Terrier called Buffy who fought many illnesses, including a rare cancer. You will laugh out loud, cry softly and fondly remember her story long after reading it. It is a light-hearted look at her life, covering her early days and continuing until her eventual death. Found in a shop doorway, Buffy had a traumatic beginning. The young girl who found her and took her in died of cancer, and so Buffy came to Thomasina, and was loved and cared for until her death. She was infuriating and inspiring, funny and cunning, from being smart enough to use her surgical collar as a scoop, to learning to use a 'boo!' sort of 'woof!', to frighten the living daylights of a delivery man. Thomasina's own failing health meant that sometimes they were ill together; Buffy taught her to fight back and gave her a reason to carry on. A rare cancer was found in Buffy's leg when she was already suffering from a slipped disc. To save Buffy, they had to save her leg. The Animal Health Trust in Suffolk helped Buffy survive with some international help, but she took the record for recovery time. So many people loved Buffy; she touched so many lives. Buffy went on to live for many years and became an astonishing and astute dog. She gave the Price family so much joy and love, her passing left an unbearable void in their lives. This story records her passing and Thomasina's anguish at the time. She decided to share her story because there could only be one Buffy; the Price family know they will never find another dog like her again. Goodnight Buffy: Loving a Lakeland Terrier will appeal to animal lovers, particularly dog fans, and anyone coming to terms with bereavement.

He created a venue to allow Christians to develop their musical and speaking skills independent of their church. He also wants people to be physically active and to see the heavenly Father's creativity in nature. As all this goes on, he is hiding horrible pain inside his heart, hoping no one will ever know. A one-hundred-mile relay race is proposed to his closest friends and his brother, Kenzie. As the time for the race nears, established folks from the church bear down on Lake's positive attitude. The pastor's son despises Lake and threatens him. A visiting narcissistic pastor causes Lake to violently respond to a false accusation. Lake warns his friends to watch for sheep that are wolves in disguise. Church gossip nearly destroys the friendship. A death in Lake's family brings hidden shame to light. The friends have a special event to pray for the church, each other, and for forgiveness and reconciliation. The event takes place at a special secret facility only Lake and his brother knew existed. The race day arrives. Lake's friends and his brother run the race as a relay team. Lake runs the race as an ultra-runner as well as one of his newfound family members. All goes well, but the enemy is waiting to ambush. What the enemy aims to destroy, the Lord uses for his glory.

Book excerpt: The relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Associated Press reporter Lorena Hickok has sparked vociferous debate ever since 1978, when archivists at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library discovered eighteen boxes filled with letters the two women exchanged during their thirty-year friendship. But until now we have been offered only the odd quotation or excerpt from their voluminous correspondence. In Empty Without You, journalist and historian Rodger Streitmatter has transcribed and annotated 300 letters that shed new light on the legendary, passionate, and intense bond between these extraordinary women. Written with the candor and introspection of a private diary, the letters expose the most private thoughts, feelings, and motivations of their authors and allow us to assess the full dimensions of a remarkable friendship. From the day Eleanor moved into the White House and installed Lorena in a bedroom just a few feet from her own, each woman virtually lived for the other. When Lorena was away, Eleanor kissed her picture of "dearest Hick" every night before going to bed, while Lorena marked the days off her calendar in anticipation of their next meeting. In the summer of 1933, Eleanor and Lorena took a three-week road trip together, often traveling incognito. The friends even discussed a future in which they would share a home and blend their separate lives into one. Perhaps as valuable as these intimations of a love affair are the glimpses this collection offers of an Eleanor Roosevelt strikingly different from the icon she has become. Although the figure who emerges in these pages is as determined and politically adept as the woman we know, she is also surprisingly sarcastic and funny, tender and vulnerable, and even judgmental and petty -- all less public but no less important attributes of our most beloved first lady.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award Winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award On November 28, 1925, a white-bearded man sat before one of Nashville radio station WSM's newfangled carbon microphones to play a few old-time fiddle tunes. Uncle Jimmy Thompson played on the air for an hour that night, and throughout the region listeners at their old crystal sets suddenly perked up. Back in Nashville the response at the offices of National Life Insurance Company, which owned radio station WSM ("We Shield Millions"), was dramatic; phone calls and telegrams poured into the station, many of them making special requests. It was not long before station manager George D. Hay was besieged by pickers and fiddlers of every variety, as well as hoedown bands, singers, and comedians—all wanting their shot at the Saturday night airwaves. "We soon had a good-natured riot on our hands," Hay later recalled. And, thus, the Opry was born. Or so the story goes. In truth, the birth of the Opry was a far more complicated event than even Hay, "the solemn old Judge," remembered. The veteran performers of that era are all gone now, but since the 1970s pioneering country music historian Charles K. Wolfe has spent countless hours recording the oral history of the principals and their families and mining archival materials from the Country Music Foundation and elsewhere to understand just what those early days were like. The story that he has reconstructed is fascinating. Both a detailed history and a group biography of the Opry's early years, A Good-Natured Riot provides the first comprehensive and thoroughly researched account of the personalities, the music, and the social and cultural conditions that were such fertile ground for the growth of a radio show that was to become an essential part of American culture. Wolfe traces the unsure beginnings of the Opry through its many incarnations, through cast tours of the South, the Great Depression, commercial sponsorship by companies like Prince Albert Tobacco, and the first national radio linkups. He gives colorful and engaging portraits of the motley assembly of the first Opry casts—amateurs from the hills and valleys surrounding Nashville, like harmonica player Dr. Humphrey Bate ("Dean of the Opry") and fiddler Sid Harkreader, virtuoso string bands like the Dixieliners, colorful hoedown bands like the Gully Jumpers and the Fruit Jar Drinkers, the important African American performer DeFord Bailey, vaudeville acts and comedians like Lasses and Honey, through more professional groups such as the Vagabonds, the Delmore Brothers, Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, and perennial favorite Roy Acuff and his Smoky Mountain Boys. With dozens of wonderful photographs and a complete roster of every performer and performance of these early Opry years, A Good-Natured Riot gives a full and authoritative portrayal of the colorful beginnings of WSM's barn dance program up to 1940, by which time the Grand Ole Opry had found its national audience and was poised to become the legendary institution that it remains to this day.
