Book excerpt: The year is 1920, and Bostonians from all walks of life- rich and poor, young and old, blue collar and white collar- are being enticed to invest their life savings with a friendly, charismatic Italian-American by the name of Charles Ponzi. Some are well meaning, while others are simply greedy. Little do they know that he is neither a financial wizard nor a boldly innovative thinker, but a grandiose fraudster and clever con artist who has kept under wraps a Canadian prison record for bank fraud- and who now seeks to make his obsessive dream of amassing great wealth come true at the huge expense of thousands of innocent people. Ponzi's incredible persuasive power to dupe foolish investors quickly extends beyond the city borders, and the overall fiscal health of the entire Commonwealth is soon under close scrutiny by Governor Calvin Coolidge, who entrusts Massachusetts Bank Commissioner Joseph C. Allen to investigate. When Allen seizes five banks and prevents Ponzi from accessing his stolen millions, the swindler's fate hangs in the balance. However, the full brunt of public wrath comes to bear on Allen and his wife, Hart-Lester Harris Allen- and even worse, their happy future together becomes highly questionable when a mob contract is put out on his life. As told through the eyes of Hart-Lester, Good Night, Dear Hart, Good Night opens with her idealistic, romantic adventures as a wealthy young college graduate; her marriage to Allen and their early trials and tribulations; and how Hart and Joe's paths unfortunately cross with the cunning Ponzi, whose own rise to power and rapid descent unfolds in alternating chapters. The book, written in narrative non-fiction style, is based on the author's interviews with Hart-Lester, other eyewitness accounts and associated correspondence, and newspaper and journal articles from this turbulent time in Boston's history. It offers a fascinating look at a bygone era as well as an examination of Ponzi, the smooth talking criminal and inventor of the first 'get-rich-quick' scheme that to this day continues to be reinvented (Bernard Madoff in 2009).

Book excerpt: Paul Laurence Dunbar's 'The Complete Poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar' offers an expansive tableau of the African American experience at the turn of the 20th century through poetry that weaves a rich tapestry of emotion, heritage, and history. This collection showcases Dunbar's mastery of both standard English verse and dialect poetry, the latter drawing from the vernacular of the Southern Black community. His work exemplifies a fusion of lyrical and narrative styles, set against the broad literary context of the American Realism and early Modernist periods, a time when issues of race and identity were carving deep fissures in the cultural landscape of the nation. As the son of freed slaves, Dunbar's literary genius springs from the well of his own cultural and personal struggles. His poignant exploration of themes such as liberty, oppression, love, and the complexities of African American life has cemented his reputation as a significant literary figure. Dunbar's poetry delves into the emotional and cultural dialogues of his era, preserving the voices of his community through eloquent artistic expressions that remain impactful to this day. His works are not merely artifacts of a historical epoch but are living testaments to the endurance and depth of the human spirit. For enthusiasts of American poetry and those invested in the literary chronicles of the African American experience, 'The Complete Poems of Paul Laurence Dunbar' is an essential volume. It offers readers a window into the soul of a man and his society, revealing the universal truths that resonate beyond the boundaries of time and race. This anthology is deserving of a place on the shelves of scholars and lay readers alike who appreciate the power of words to incite change, to celebrate heritage, and to heal fissures wrought by history's hand.

Book excerpt: While growing up in South Dakota, Ray Lillibridge saw Sioux Indian chief Sitting Bull, witnessed the Children's Blizzard of 1888, and lived through prairie fires, grasshopper infestations, and times of want. But when he moved to Delavan, Illinois, in the early 1900s to live with his uncle, he had no idea that destiny was already guiding him to the love of his life. In a compilation of letters, recollections, and photographs, James Lowell Hall leads others through the love story of Ray Lillibridge and Marguerite Jenike as they courted each other, fell in love, corresponded, and bridged the ten-mile gap between their homes. The book gives a glimpse of life and hardships in America over one hundred years ago, recounting Ray's internal struggles, Marguerite's devotion to her faith and family, and the legacy they left behind. Good Night, Sweetheart, Good Night shares the true love story of a young couple at the turn of the twentieth century as they created a life together.

Book excerpt: Paul Laurence Dunbar was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Dayton, Ohio, to parents who had been enslaved in Kentucky before the American Civil War, Dunbar began writing stories and verse when he was a child. He published his first poems at the age of 16 in a Dayton newspaper, and served as president of his high school's literary society. Dunbar's popularity increased rapidly after his work was praised by William Dean Howells, a leading editor associated with Harper's Weekly. Dunbar became one of the first African-American writers to establish an international reputation. In addition to his poems, short stories, and novels, he also wrote the lyrics for the musical comedy In Dahomey (1903), the first all-African-American musical produced on Broadway in New York. The musical later toured in the United States and the United Kingdom. Suffering from tuberculosis, which then had no cure, Dunbar died in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 33. Much of Dunbar's more popular work in his lifetime was written in the "Negro dialect" associated with the antebellum South, though he also used the Midwestern regional dialect of James Whitcomb Riley. Dunbar also wrote in conventional English in other poetry and novels and is considered the first important African American sonnet writer. Since the late 20th century, scholars have become more interested in these other works. The thorns were thick and keen Where'er I trembling trod; The way was long between My wounded feet and God. Where healing waters flow Do thou my footsteps lead. My heart is aching so; Thy gracious balm I need. PASSION AND LOVE A maiden wept and, as a comforter, Came one who cried, "I love thee," and he seized Her in his arms and kissed her with hot breath, That dried the tears upon her flaming cheeks. While evermore his boldly blazing eye Burned into hers; but she uncomforted Shrank from his arms and only wept the more. Then one came and gazed mutely in her face With wide and wistful eyes; but still aloof He held himself; as with a reverent fear, As one who knows some sacred presence nigh. And as she wept he mingled tear with tear, That cheered her soul like dew a dusty flower,— Until she smiled, approached, and touched his hand![Pg 12]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyrics of Lowly Life (1896) is a collection of poems by African American author Paul Laurence Dunbar. Published while Dunbar was at a turning point in his career as one of the nation’s leading black poets, Lyrics of Lowly Life combined his hugely successful volumes Oak and Ivy (1892) and Majors and Minors (1896), establishing his reputation as an artist with a powerful vision of faith and perseverance who sought to capture and examine the diversity of the African American experience. In “The Poet and His Song,” Dunbar compares the art of poetry to tilling the soil, a slow and painstaking process requiring full commitment, body and soul, to the task at hand: “My days are never days of ease; / I till my ground and prune my trees. / When ripened gold is all the plain, / I put my sickle to the grain. / I labor hard, and toil and sweat, / While others dream within the dell; / But even while my brow is wet, / I sing my song, and all is well.” For Dunbar, the reward is the song itself, both an act of labor and a celebration of life, emphasizing the role of the poet as not just a dreamer, but a doer. Throughout this collection, Dunbar explores the role of the poet in society, grounding each poem within his identity as a black man in America. In “Frederick Douglass,” an elegy written for the occasion of the great man’s passing, Dunbar makes clear the consequences of pride and defiance in a nation built by slaves: “He dared the lightning in the lightning’s track, / And answered thunder with his thunder back.” With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Paul Laurence Dunbar’s Lyrics of Lowly Life is a classic of African American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town, but shortly after Becky shuns him, he accompanies Huckleberry Finn to the graveyard at night, where they witness a trio of body snatchers getting into a fight. Tom and Huck run away to an island. While enjoying their new-found freedom, they become aware that the community is sounding the river for their bodies… "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" – Huck Finn and his friend Tom Sawyer have each come into a considerable sum of money as a result of their earlier adventures. "Tom Sawyer, Detective" – Tom attempts to solve a mysterious murder in this burlesque of the immensely popular detective novels of the time. "The Boys' Life of Mark Twain" by Albert Bigelow Paine is the story of a boy, born in the humblest surroundings, reared almost without schooling, and amid benighted conditions such as to-day have no existence, yet who lived to achieve a world-wide fame. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer.

In Resa Willis's biography, we meet a dignified, optimistic woman who not only married young and raised a family under the constraints of her poor health and his money problems, but also faithfully traipsed all over the world with Twain in a partnership that spanned four decades, Mark and Livy is a triumph of the biographer's art, and essential to a full understanding of America's foremost writer."--Jacket

Book excerpt: Mark Twain began writing his autobiography long before the 1906 publications of these Chapters from my Autobiography. He originally planned to have his memoirs published only after his death but realized, once he'd passed his 70th year, that a lot of the material might be OK to publish before his departure. These chapters were published in serial form in the North American Review during 1906-1907. While much of the material consists of stories about the people, places and incidents of his long life, there're also several sections from his daughter. In My Mark Twain, Howells pens a literary memoir that includes such fascinating scenes as their meetings with former president Ulysses Grant who was then writing the classic autobiography that Twain would underwrite in the largest publishing deal until that time. But it is also notable for its affectionate descriptions of his friend's family life during Howell's many visits to the Twain residences in Hartford and Stormfield. Mark Twain A Biography and The Boys' Life Of Mark Twain written by Albert Bigelow Paine, are an invaluable resource to better understand Twain, the stories behind his stories and his life with those he loved and with whom he worked. Mark Twain (pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens) (1835-1910), quintessential American humorist, lecturer, essayist, and author wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author and literary critic.
