Book excerpt: With just the right flourish of his pen, author James Street takes his readers for a walk in the footsteps of the men and women who populated the small towns and piney woods of his beloved home state, Mississippi. Street turns his singular experiences into moving and thought provoking universal truths — seeing beyond tarnished exteriors to the treasures within, the enduring legacy of selflessness, the making of champions, and the capacity of all, no matter what age, no matter how humble, to find and lose love. Each story is introduced by a note from the author — gems of thought and background information that further enhance the timeless contents of this collection. These short stories were originally published in such magazines as Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping, and The American Magazine. This collection includes the original short stories, The Biscuit Eater and Weep No More My Lady which were later expanded into two of Mr. Street's most famous and well-loved books. Book Synopsis Dagger Key: And Other Stories by : Lucius Shepard
Download or read book Dagger Key: And Other Stories written by Lucius Shepard and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucius Shepard is a grand master of dark fantasy, famed for his baroque yet utterly contemporary visions of existential subversion and hallucinatory collapse. In Dagger Key, his fifth major story collection, Shepard confronts hard-bitten loners and self-deceiving operators with the shadowy emptiness within themselves and the insinuating darkness without, to ends sardonic and terrifying. The stories in this book, including six novellas, are: "Stars Seen Through Stone" - in a small Pennsylvania town, mediocrity suddenly blossoms into genius; but at what terrible cost? "Emerald Street Expansions" - in near-future Seattle, echoes of the life of a medieval French poet hint at either reincarnation or a dire conspiracy. "Limbo" - a retired criminal on the run from the Mafia encounters ghosts, and much worse, on the shores of a haunted lake. "Liar's House" - in the grip of the legendary dragon Griaule, destiny is a treacherous and transformative thing. "Dead Monty" - a small-time New Orleans criminal ventures outside his proper territory, and poker and voudoun conspire to bring him down. "Dinner at Baldassaro's" - a gang of immortals debates the future in an Italian resort, only for events to outrun any of their expectations. "Abimagique" - a glib college loser falls in love with a witch, becoming an involuntary part of a world-saving - or world-destroying - magical ritual. "The Lepidopertrist" - a small boy on a Caribbean island witnesses the creation of preternatural beings by a Yankee wizard... "Dagger Key" - off the coast of Belize, the ghost of a famous pirate seems to control a spiral of murder and intrigue; or is someone else responsible?
Download or read book The Golden Key written by Henry Van Dyke and published by Fredonia Books (NL). This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are twelve tales that I have known for some time but never could find leisure to write. Now release from all sorts of official duty has set me free to work at whatever I like. As they are brought together it appears that these are all stories of deliverance from some kind of peril or perplexity or bondage. The book could have had as a motto: There is always a way out. But this might be too sweeping - misleading to light readers who look for a "happy ending" in tune with their own desires. Life is not made that way. The doors of deliverance are often different from what we expected. Sometimes one that looks dark leads into liberty. However that may be, I believe that in all God's world there is no hopeless imprisonment nor endless torment. So instead of a motto I have chosen for this book a symbol: The Golden Key. Take it and use it as you will. Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) was an American clergyman, educator, and author. He graduated from Princeton in 1873, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1874. He was pastor of the Brick Presbyterian Church, New York City (1883-99), professor of English literature at Princeton (1899-1923), and U.S. minister to the Netherlands (1913-16). Among his popular inspirational writings is the Christmas story The Other Wise Man (1896). As President Wilson's ambassador to the Netherlands from 1913, Van Dyke was a first-hand witness to the outbreak of World War I and its progress, and was a key player in the President's diplomatic efforts to keep the U.S. out of the conflict.

Download or read book Start with Why written by Simon Sinek and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-12-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspirational bestseller that ignited a movement and asked us to find our WHY Discover the book that is captivating millions on TikTok and that served as the basis for one of the most popular TED Talks of all time—with more than 56 million views and counting. Over a decade ago, Simon Sinek started a movement that inspired millions to demand purpose at work, to ask what was the WHY of their organization. Since then, millions have been touched by the power of his ideas, and these ideas remain as relevant and timely as ever. START WITH WHY asks (and answers) the questions: why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over? People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers had little in common, but they all started with WHY. They realized that people won't truly buy into a product, service, movement, or idea until they understand the WHY behind it. START WITH WHY shows that the leaders who have had the greatest influence in the world all think, act and communicate the same way—and it's the opposite of what everyone else does. Sinek calls this powerful idea The Golden Circle, and it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be inspired. And it all starts with WHY.
