Book Synopsis A History of Children's Play by : Brian Sutton-Smith
Download or read book A History of Children's Play written by Brian Sutton-Smith and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand children from 1840 to 1890 were subjected to an unusual combination of agrarian existence and an industrial social philosophy in the newly formed schools. When schools became more universal in the expanding industrial society, a new emphasis on the control of children developed, and from 1920 onward, adult supervision in the form of heavily organized sports and playgrounds encroached more and more on the untrammeled freedom of the rural environment. Returning to his home country of New Zealand, Brian Sutton-Smith documents the relationship between children's play and the actual process of history. Drawing on interviews with hundreds of informants from every province and school district of New Zealand, the author illuminates for the first time the various social, cultural, historical, and psychological context in which children's play occurs. He treats both formal and informal play, as well as the play of both boys and girls.

Book excerpt: Wilkinsburg, named for Gen. John Wilkins Jr., was incorporated as a borough in 1887. The village was founded on a 266-acre parcel purchased in 1789 by Col. Dunning McNair, who also laid the central street plan. After McNair's death in 1825, the village was purchased by James Kelly. Caring deeply about the social life of the community, Kelly donated the land for most of the schools, churches, and residences for the elderly. When Wilkinsburg was annexed by Pittsburgh in the early 1870s, Kelly financed the legal battle to have the decision reversed. Through historic photographs from the Wilkinsburg Historical Society and private collections, Wilkinsburg illustrates the development of one of the most historic communities in the region.

Book Synopsis The Hutchinson Illustrated Encyclopedia of British History by : Simon Hall
Download or read book The Hutchinson Illustrated Encyclopedia of British History written by Simon Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hutchinson Illustrated Encyclopedia of British History is a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the people, events, and ideas that have shaped Britain from prehistory to the present day. The editors have also sought to convey the truth that history is more than simply a compilation of facts from the past. The editors have included as much factual information as possible in each A-Z entry, and numerous tables and statistics are included, as well as many specially-created maps and plans. The chronological relationships of past events and lives are conveyed through various detailed subject chronologies (attached to the relevant A-Z entries). A large thematic chronology, following the A-Z text, provides a visual reference to the relationship between the events of British/Irish history and events elsewhere in the world. And the cultural context of as many entries as possible has been brought to life via a wide range of illustrations, which provide a wealth of visual detail and, often, a key to past conceptions. Interspersed in the text are 21 specially commissioned, extended feature articles from noted historians that provide the analysis and the sense of the broad sweep of history that would otherwise be impossible to convey in an A-Z reference book.

Download or read book William Haggar written by Peter Yorke and published by Headline Accent. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biography of William Haggar, a pioneer of the cinema. Written by Haggar's great-grandson, the book draws on oral reminiscences, unpublished family memoirs and contemporary press reports. It tells the rags-to-riches story of a travelling theatrical who became one of Britain's select band of pioneer film-makers. Containing information on Victorian portable theatres, fairground bioscope shows and Haggar's films, it is a "must" for anyone interested in the popular entertainment of 100 years ago. Contents: - Ten chapters deal with Haggar's life (1851-1925) from his birth at Dedham, Essex, via forty years of travelling with portable theatres and his own Bioscope Exhibition, to respected retirement in Aberdare, South Wales. The last chapter relates the subsequent rediscovery of his films and the recognition of their pioneering quality. - Illustrations include contemporary family portraits, photographs of his huge ornate bioscope sh ow-fronts and stills from his films. - Eight factual appendices provide supporting lists and descriptions of plays and films; and the full texts of particular newspaper articles alluded to in the main narrative. - Notes on sources of information, references and other details. The author, William Haggar's great-grandson Peter Yorke was educated at Queen Elizabeth's Hospital, Bristol, and Pembroke College, Cambridge, graduating in Classics in 1960. Much of his working life was spent representing the University of East Anglia, Norwich, as client to architects, consultants and contractors constructing the then "new university". Retiring in 1996 and moving to Dorset, he has researched his great-grandfather's life and times, travelling throughout England and Wales and to Australia to meet his Haggar relatives to consult their memories for inclusion in this book.
