Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History and Legacy of the Suffragette Fellowship provides a biographical account of the scope and depth of the memory work of the now-forgotten commemorative group the Suffragette Fellowship, active from the 1920s to the 1970s. The Suffragette Fellowship comprised members from the militant suffrage groups known as the Women’s Social and Political Union, the Women’s Freedom League, and the Actress Franchise League. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of the Fellowship’s attempts to form and sustain a collective Suffragette identity across four decades of activity. It considers the legacy of contested histories attached to militant campaigning that pressured Fellowship leaders to take control of the public memory of suffrage history. With close attention given to a neglected piece of feminist history, this book highlights the cultural and political impacts that the Fellowship enacted in their memory of the women’s suffrage movement. Richly illustrated with images of members, artefacts, and publications, this extensive study of the Suffragette Fellowship adds to transnational suffrage histories in the United Kingdom and Australia and will be of interest to scholars in memory studies and women’s history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to gather in a single narrative the rather disparate stories of Dominican friars in Southern Africa over the past four centuries. Dominicans from Portugal and Portuguese India were present in South-East Africa from 1577 to 1835. Patrick Raymond Griffith, an Irish Dominican, became the first resident bishop in South Africa in 1837. A Dominican mission was established in 1917 with the arrival of a group of English friars. A second group arrived from the Netherlands in 1932. The aim is to provide a social history of the Dominicans in Southern Africa, that is, a history that deals specifically with the social and cultural factors of historical development. The Dominicans ministered in a political, social and cultural context which impacted on their apostolic activities and, in turn, was affected by them. The book's terminus ad quem is 1990, when the National Party opened a process of political negotiation, thus ending more than forty years of apartheid rule.

Book excerpt: Mid-century Livermore saw a demographic shift from farms and ranches to suburbanization and continuing support of the existing health care industry, New Deal programs, a naval airbase, and two national laboratories. The health care industry flourished with the dedication in 1925 of a veterans' hospital, which is still operational today; the Livermore Sanitarium for the treatment of alcoholism and mental disorders; and the Del Valle Sanitarium for the treatment of tuberculosis. During the 1930s, Livermore residents supported the Hetch Hetchy Project and numerous efforts of the Works Progress Administration. A naval airbase for training pilots was established in 1942, during World War II. This base became the Lawrence Livermore Radiation Laboratory in the 1950s and was soon accompanied by an extension of Sandia National Laboratories across the street.

Book excerpt: New Orleans--born Stanhope Bayne-Jones was one of the pivotal figures in the modernization of American medicine. Through his life story Albert E. Cowdrey's War and Healing dramatizes the growth of American medicine from a provincial and amateurish state into a major national endeavor.Cowdrey shows the diversity and wide-ranging impact of Bayne-Jones's career. A brilliant student at Johns Hopkins, and a protégé of William Welch, bayne-Jones became in turn dean of Yale Medical School, a foundation head, a general in the army's Medical Corps, president of the New York Hospital--Cornell Medical Center, director of the army's medical research program, and a member of the Surgeon General's Commission on Smoking and Health. Both a unique and a representative figure, Bayne-Jones learned from his military experience in two wars that the fundamental business of medicine is health, not disease, and became a strong advocate for preventive medicine. He developed a broad, idealized conception of the future of medicine as a discipline free of political control, organized collectively, devoted to the preservation of health, and divorced from entrepreneurial passions.Bayne-Jones was a complex, fascinating man and physician. Gifted with great intelligence and considerable charm, he spent much of his life in the Ivy League, the halls of government, and the great northeastern cities. Cowdrey explores the tensions between Bayne-Jones's southern roots and national aspirations, between his deep commitment to his family and heritage and his restless, driving ambition. Bayne-Jones's career forms still another chapter, logical and yet unexpected, in the family saga that will be familiar to many readers through The Children of Pride.

At a time when there were few powerful women in public life, Dr Edith, as she was known, served in Clement Attlee's transformational post-war Labour government and oversaw the National Insurance scheme which solidified the welfare state in Britain. Here, Labour MEP Mary Honeyball, provides the first biography of this remarkable early pioneer for women in politics. Honeyball shows how Edith Summerskill's direct campaigning was instrumental in promoting women's causes throughout her life and lays out her remarkable achievements in securing the equal rights of housewives and divorced women over property. This is an uplifting and enlightening account of a forgotten Labour hero.
