Book excerpt: In order to ease my conscience and, further, to disclose certain facts which for the past year or two have, I know, greatly puzzled readers of our daily newspapers, I have decided to here reveal some very curious and, perhaps, sensational circumstances. In fact, after much perplexity and long consideration, I have resolved, without seeking grace or favor, to make a clean breast of all that happened to me, and to leave the reader to judge of my actions, and either to condemn or to condone my offenses. I will begin at the beginning. It has been said that service in the Army has upset the average man's chances of prosperity in civil life. That, I regret, is quite true. When I, George Hargreave, came out of the Army after the Armistice, I found myself, like many hundreds of other ex-officers, completely at a loose end, without a shilling in the world over and above the gratuity of between two and three hundred pounds to which my period of commissioned service entitled me. Grown accustomed during the war, however, to fending for myself and overcoming difficulties and problems of one sort and another, I at once set to work to look about for any kind of employment for which I fancied I might be fitted. After answering many advertisements to no purpose, I one day happened upon one in The Times which rather stirred my curiosity.

Other movements made none, save that each man extended an arm and reached down his Winchester rifle, which lay all ready to his hand on the heap of skins against which they were leaning. Within, the firelight glowed luridly on the burnished barrels of the weapons, hardly penetrating the gloomy corners of the hut. Without, the wild shrieking of the wind and the swish and sough of pine branches furiously tossing to the eddying gusts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are only certain people considered physically beautiful? What is it - specifically - within their anatomy that these lucky few individuals possess that most of us simply do not? Can we somehow objectively test our own anatomy for beauty and then use our test results as a guide to change our physical appearance? Can we join this highly elite group of physically beautiful people? Dr. Andrew Hayduke's groundbreaking book is the first of its kind to explore a potential scientific explanation for why only certain faces and breasts appear physically beautiful. After decades of experience as a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills and Palm Springs, California, Dr. Hayduke shares his unique perspective on this fascinating subject. The Golden Ratio Within the Human Face and Breast unveils the mysterious underlying secret blueprint for human physical beauty that exists hidden deep within the anatomic layout of attractive (i.e., beautiful) faces and breasts. The Golden Ratio Within the Human Face and Breast will:1) Convince you to look beyond the expression "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and consider something far more intriguing as the true explanation for physical beauty. 2) Provide evidence that beauty is an objective quality rather than a mere subjective opinion. 3) Provide an all-access backstage pass to the secret clinical analysis methodologies used by a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. 4) Illustrate how the faces and breasts of average-looking people can be transformed to a more beautiful appearance with the help of Dr. Hayduke's state-of-the-art facial and breast beauty tests. 5) Disclose a detailed description of the once-secret inner mechanism of both the Hayduke Facial Analysis test and the Hayduke Breast Analysis test-including the exact specifications of each anatomic test grid used within Dr. Hayduke's patented beauty analysis methodologies. 6)Explain the basics of the golden ratio (also known as the divine proportion, golden section, golden mean, golden proportion, divine section and golden number). 7) Illustrate how the golden ratio relationship of 1.618 to 1.0 is secretly hidden within many beautiful world-famous works of art, architecture, logos, and even nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together researchers with cognitive-scientific and literary backgrounds to present innovative research in all three variations on the possible interactions between literary studies and cognitive science. The tripartite structure of the volume reflects a more ambitious conception of what cognitive approaches to literature are and could be than is usually encountered, and thus aims both to map out and to advance the field. The first section corresponds to what most people think of as "cognitive poetics" or "cognitive literary studies": the study of literature by literary scholars drawing on cognitive-scientific methods, findings, and/or debates to yield insights into literature. The second section demonstrates that literary scholars needn't only make use of cognitive science to study literature, but can also, in a reciprocally interdisciplinary manner, use a cognitively informed perspective on literature to offer benefits back to the cognitive sciences. Finally, the third section, "literature in cognitive science", showcases some of the ways in which literature can be a stimulating object of study and a fertile testing ground for theories and models, not only to literary scholars but also to cognitive scientists, who here engage with some key questions in cognitive literary studies with the benefit of their in-depth scientific knowledge and training.

Book excerpt: A coming-of-age story set in the isolated, murky swamps of Louisiana When the mighty wind blows through the swamps of southern Louisiana, it changes not only the land, but the inhabitants as well. Just such a wind brought a lone infant into the care of the Chitimacha Indians deep in the Atchafalaya swamp. Raised by the tribal holy man, Storm Rider grows to adolescence as a respected tribal member, steeped in the wisdom and traditions of his adopted people. Their clan competitions, life-cycle rituals, social interactions, and subsistence labors are well explained in this historical novel. When captured by an enemy raiding party, Storm Rider and his nemesis, the village bully, forge a bond that delivers them from danger and charts their futures. Love, hate, friendship, and loyalty ride the dark bayou waters and converge at the sacred Rain Tree. Swamps, hurricanes, cannibals, and unforgettable characters are interwoven as tightly as one of old Cane Basket's watertight baskets in this anthropologically accurate story of American Indian cultures in conflict.
