Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public transport has now been around for over 150 years in one shape or another and this book takes a nostalgic look at the heritage and story of Buses and Trams. Tramways when operated in the 19th century and beyond formed a large part of the community in towns and cities, helping to get people around in style using steam and electric technology. Trams over time were however up against the might of the internal combustion engine, in the shape of the emerging petrol and diesel powered buses. These newfangled vehicles didn’t require rails or overhead cables and could go just about anywhere. There was also of course the electric trolleybus that sat somewhere between a bus and tram. The tram has thankfully made comebacks over the years and buses have evolved with the times, so join us looking through the early years to more recent times. This book is full of facts, information about the manufacturers, insight about the classic buses and includes some superb archive pictures.

Book Synopsis The Golden Age of Coach Travel by : Peter Robinson
Download or read book The Golden Age of Coach Travel written by Peter Robinson and published by Bloomsbury Shire Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coach travel had a huge impact on Britain in the twentieth century, the charabancs and buses of the early twentieth century began to challenge the railways for supremacy --tourist resorts, at first distressed by what to do with the influx of vehicles and unruly holidaymakers, soon adapted to capitalize on these new opportunities. After the war, the package tour (satirized by several 'Carry On' films) came into its own, thousands of people travelling on coaches of varying luxury to destinations at home and abroad. In this fascinating history of long-haul bus journeys, leisure and travel historians Peter Robinson and Harry Cameron describe the evolution from horse-drawn omnibuses to charabancs and on to the motor coaches which carried people on holidays and business in the UK and abroad, examining how public demand changed the design of the buses and the deals that bus operators offered. They also explain the challenges presented by private car ownership in the later twentieth century and the role of buses in popular culture.

Book Synopsis The Transportation Experience by : William L. Garrison
Download or read book The Transportation Experience written by William L. Garrison and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Transportation Experience explores the historical evolution of transportation modes and technologies. The book traces how systems are innovated, planned and adapted, deployed and expanded, and reach maturity, where they may either be maintained in a polished obsolesce often propped up by subsidies, be displaced by competitors, or be reorganized and renewed. An array of examples supports the idea that modern policies are built from past experiences. William Garrison and David Levinson assert that the planning (and control) of nonlinear, unstable processes is today's central transportation problem, and that this is universal and true of all modes. Modes are similar, in that they all have a triad structure of network, vehicles, and operations; but this framework counters conventional wisdom. Most think of each mode as having a unique history and status, and each is regarded as the private playground of experts and agencies holding unique knowledge, operating in isolated silos. However, this book argues that while modes have an appearance of uniqueness, the same patterns repeat: systems policies, structures, and behaviors are a generic design on varying modal cloth. In the end, the illusion of uniqueness proves to be myopic. While it is true that knowledge has accumulated from past experiences, the heavy hand of these experiences places boundaries on current knowledge; especially on the ways professionals define problems and think about processes. The Transportation Experience provides perspective for the collections of models and techniques that are the essence of transportation science, and also expands the boundaries of current knowledge of the field.
