Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwin Walter Kemmerer was one of the unsung heroes of the 20th century. A Professor of Economics at Princeton, he was known as the “money doctor” between the wars, helping countries to establish and maintain strong currencies between 1923 and 1933. He was a firm advocate of the gold standard and favored hard money with convertibility domestic and international. This is his major treatise: Gold and the Gold Standard: The Story of Gold Money, Past, Present, and Future, which was first published in 1944. In it, Kemmerer reviews the history of gold and its outstanding merit as a currency and presents a plan that likely may have saved the world from hyperinflation and the booms and busts of the past 50 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning 30 years ago American citizens were allowed to own and exchange gold in any form, something they had not been able to do for the previous 40 years. Restrictions on gold began with a series of actions intended to buttress the collapsing economy of the 1930s, including executive and legislative action forbidding the private ownership of and trading in gold and abrogating "gold clauses" in contracts--obligations payable in gold or in dollars measured by gold. All of these actions were subsequently upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. They have profound implications for us today. This book provides a full and thoughtful consideration of all these issues, including the economic and legal history of the events of the 1930s, the effects of those events on government and private practices since that time, the economics of gold clauses and other indexing devices, and the anticipated impact of the legalization of gold ownership. It includes chapters by James M. Buchanan and T. Nicolaus Tideman, Milton Friedman, Harry G. Johnson, Ralph K. Winter, and Gerald T. Dunne, as well as discussions by Allan Meltzer, Karl Brunner, Armen Alchian, Lester Chandler, and David Meiselman among others. The diverse points of view represented make this book valuable to a broad spectrum of people concerned with the relationship between legal and economic policy; with the role of money in times of depression or inflation; and with the importance of gold itself in international and domestic economic systems. It will be important to economists concerned with international trade, macroeconomics, monetary economics; legal scholars concerned with problems of constitutional law, international trade, and the theory of contracts; and to that large group of people who are interested in precious metal that has long been central to human affairs. Henry G. Manne is dean and university professor emeritus at George Mason University. He has published many books and articles and is an Honorary Life Member of the American Law and Economics Association. He is considered an expert in insider trading, legal education, law and economics. Roger LeRoy Miller is associated with the Institute for University Studies in Arlington, Texas. Some of his most recent books include Money, Banking and Financial Markets (with David D. VanHoose), Business Law Today: The Essentials (with Gaylord A. Jentz) and Economics Today.

Book excerpt: As the U.S. economy struggles to recover from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, citizens across the country are searching for alternative investment vehicles. Many are finding solace in a precious metal that has been a universal measure of wealth since early civilization: gold. Investment brokers and novices alike are reaping the benefits that come with diversifying their investments. Goldâe(tm)s value is determined by a number of factors including the volume of the metal held by prosperous countries, the rarity of the metal as it is refined, and current market trends, such as inflation and the movement of the investment market. In 1910, gold was worth $20 an ounce; a century later, in 2010, the value of gold reached nearly $1,120 an ounce. This book discusses where the value of these metals first originated and how they have evolved over the course of human history. You will learn how practical uses of precious metals have directly affected their value over time and how metals like gold and silver are direct indicators of the current state of the economy. Most importantly, you will learn to recognize market trends that pinpoint the risk of inflation and the exodus from stock to precious metals that will often occur as a result. You will learn how to use mutual funds and futures to diversify your portfolio without spreading yourself too thin. With advice from dozens of financial experts and commodities traders, you will learn how to maximize your return and minimize your risk. If you are looking to diversify your portfolio and protect your investments, The Complete Guide to Investing in Gold and Precious Metals is your handbook for making the most from your investment. During these times there is always an enormous wealth transfer, and it is within your power to transfer that wealth away from you or toward you." --Michael Maloney, precious metals investment expert and historian; founder and principal, Gold & Silver, Inc. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Nation Under Gold examines the countervailing forces that have long since divided America—whether gold should be a repository of hope, or a damaging delusion that has long since derailed the rational investor. Worshipped by Tea Party politicians but loathed by sane economists, gold has historically influenced American monetary policy and has exerted an often outsized influence on the national psyche for centuries. Now, acclaimed business writer James Ledbetter explores the tumultuous history and larger-than-life personalities—from George Washington to Richard Nixon—behind America’s volatile relationship to this hallowed metal and investigates what this enduring obsession reveals about the American identity. Exhaustively researched and expertly woven, One Nation Under Gold begins with the nation’s founding in the 1770s, when the new republic erupted with bitter debates over the implementation of paper currency in lieu of metal coins. Concerned that the colonies’ thirteen separate currencies would only lead to confusion and chaos, some Founding Fathers believed that a national currency would not only unify the fledgling nation but provide a perfect solution for a country that was believed to be lacking in natural silver and gold resources. Animating the "Wild West" economy of the nineteenth century with searing insights, Ledbetter brings to vivid life the actions of Whig president Andrew Jackson, one of gold’s most passionate advocates, whose vehement protest against a standardized national currency would precipitate the nation’s first feverish gold rush. Even after the establishment of a national paper currency, the virulent political divisions continued, reaching unprecedented heights at the Democratic National Convention in 1896, when presidential aspirant William Jennings Bryan delivered the legendary "Cross of Gold" speech that electrified an entire convention floor, stoking the fears of his agrarian supporters. While Bryan never amassed a wide-enough constituency to propel his cause into the White House, America’s stubborn attachment to gold persisted, wreaking so much havoc that FDR, in order to help rescue the moribund Depression economy, ordered a ban on private ownership of gold in 1933. In fact, so entrenched was the belief that gold should uphold the almighty dollar, it was not until 1973 that Richard Nixon ordered that the dollar be delinked from any relation to gold—completely overhauling international economic policy and cementing the dollar’s global significance. More intriguing is the fact that America’s exuberant fascination with gold has continued long after Nixon’s historic decree, as in the profusion of late-night television ads that appeal to goldbug speculators that proliferate even into the present. One Nation Under Gold reveals as much about American economic history as it does about the sectional divisions that continue to cleave our nation, ultimately becoming a unique history about economic irrationality and its influence on the American psyche.

Book excerpt: Learn why gold prices are sure to soar to $10,000/oz. and beyond...and how to profit As paper currency continues to lose its purchasing power and global markets struggle in the face of economic turmoil, investors are turning to gold to stabilize their portfolios. $10,000 Gold explains why this is a smart move, arguing that the price of gold will continue climbing to $10,000/ounce and beyond in the years to come. Looking at the underlying causes of gold's rising value, the book contends that intelligent investors have no choice but to invest in this precious metal. Written by one of the world's leading authorities on gold, the book teaches readers to think independently about gold, money, and the geopolitics that affect its price. The security of gold offers peace of mind, making fears about the fluctuation of the stock market irrelevant, and $10,000 Gold shows why, just like usual, gold remains the single best asset for preserving wealth in any economy. Looking at the world through the eyes of gold—where wealth is measured in ounces, not dollars—the book is a candid insight into the current state of the economy and how to stay safe no matter what lies ahead. Explains why gold price will soar to over $10,000/ounce Teaches readers to reconsider the way they think about money, showing that wealth should be weighed in gold, not unbacked dollars Provides invaluable advice on protecting money by putting it into the safest asset class on earth No one knows what the next few years hold for the economy, but investing in gold allows for financial security in any market.
