Book excerpt: As a deputy head teacher, he recognises that free, compulsory, universal, comprehensive education as a noble and humane objective. But as a realist he would advise teachers never to forget that most pupils turn up to lessons because they have to. This is the story of one person who was helping staff and students to cope with the gap between the dream and the reality.'It does not help a teacher when confronted by trendy governors to reveal too much awareness of the realities of the job ...''The eye of a needle through which a good man must pass is the unqualified approval of his headmaster or, as I dare say, his headmaster's wife ...''Nothing happens until you teach all pupils irrespective of ability as if their success meant as much to you as that of your own children ...'

Book excerpt: Zelle and her allies have returned to Zeuten, but their visit to Itzar left nobody unscathed. Especially Zelle, whose allegiance with the nameless Shaper has given her a burden that might kill her before it lets her free. Rien, meanwhile, has his own battle to fight. Returning to his homeland leads to more than a confrontation with the man who took everything from him, as in their absence, their enemy has seemingly formed an alliance with another Great Power. Invicten, god of illusions, possesses magic that can turn friend against friend and nation against nation - and it might already be too late to stop him working his influence over the other mages of Aestin. While Zelle struggles to protect her nation against the deadly threat across the ocean, Evita is forced to turn to the assassins she once lived with for answers on the magic she took from them. But the truth is deadlier than she would ever have guessed. War is on the horizon, with the three Great Powers prepared to use the human world as their battleground. And in a battle of the gods, there may be no humans left standing in the end…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century Hongloumeng, known in English as Dream of the Red Chamber or The Story of the Stone, is generally considered to be the greatest of Chinese novels--one that masterfully blends realism and romance, psychological motivation and fate, daily life and mythical occurrences, as it narrates the decline of a powerful Chinese family. In this path-breaking study, Anthony Yu goes beyond the customary view of Hongloumeng as a vivid reflection of late imperial Chinese culture by examining the novel as a story about fictive representation. Through a maze of literary devices, the novel challenges the authority of history as well as referential biases in reading. At the heart of Hongloumeng, Yu argues, is the narration of desire. Desire appears in this tale as the defining trait and problem of human beings and at the same time shapes the novel's literary invention and effect. According to Yu, this focalizing treatment of desire may well be Hongloumeng's most distinctive accomplishment. Through close readings of selected episodes, Yu analyzes principal motifs of the narrative, such as dream, mirror, literature, religious enlightenment, and rhetorical reflexivity in relation to fictive representation. He contextualizes his discussions with a comprehensive genealogy of qing--desire, disposition, sentiment, feeling--a concept of fundamental importance in historical Chinese culture, and shows how the text ingeniously exploits its multiple meanings. Spanning a wide range of comparative literary sources, Yu creates a new conceptual framework in which to reevaluate this masterpiece.

Once again Tracy Cooper Posey proves that she is a master of all genres - thrillers, revolution, war, politics, romance. Bravo!!! The action and suspense was super high and almost non-stop. This series would make fantastic movies! I loved to read about past characters fiercely defending what’s theirs still. I don’t know how to put the end without spoilers so I won’t. I just have a warm feeling inside. I highly recommend this book to those who love realistic storytelling filled with thrills, suspense, action, danger and of course love. War doesn't end love, it intensifies it. Wow! This entire series has been a wild ride. It is action-packed, passion-filled story. There is heroism, romance, action, and suspense - all brilliantly laid out by Cooper-Posey, piece by piece. The plot twists are fantastic! I would highly recommend this book (and the entire series, as a matter of fact), to anyone who wants to enjoy an adventure in a world far removed from our own - where honor still exists, broken people still find love, and good rises above evil. Romance and suspense all in one series. Best books I have read in years. ____ Tracy Cooper-Posey is a #1 Best Selling Author. I look forward to reading more of this series in the future. I want to know what happens now. Another brilliant series begins. Cooper-Posey has packed in love, action, mystery, and intrigue, all in this novel. I can’t wait to read the next installment! Other brilliant read from Tracy that captivates you from the very beginning as we look at the potential of a rebel uprising in a fictitious Latin American country. Passion, action, horror, tragedy and adventure are all beautifully and masterfully woven by Tracy to provide maximum reading entertainment. The characters are fantastic and the story line, well let's just say it is very new and fresh. Lots of intrigue, excitement, mystery, and, of course, some romance as well. Truthfully I cannot wait for the next book in the series to find out what is happening in Vistaria.

Book excerpt: The Reverend Christine “Chris” Low has spoken on many occasions about the testimony of her healing from multiple sclerosis and has frequently been asked to put it in writing. Now she sets out to tell her story with the hope of encouraging others to step out in faith and trust to God’s enabling to fulfill their God-given potential. Shattering Glass Ceilings presents a story of the frustrations and restrictions of gender-shaped glass ceilings and how Chris saw those ceilings come crashing down one by one. By God’s grace, she was healed of multiple sclerosis and enabled to follow his call to ordination. The road was far from easy, but through God’s Holy Spirit and the support of many good people, it became possible. Along the way she learned many lessons—most of all, coming to trust to God’s empowering and to refuse to allow the prejudices of others to determine who she was and what she could become. Inspirational and biblically based, this personal narrative tells one woman’s story of healing and empowerment as God’s grace and hand in her life made possible many great things.

Book excerpt: Named one of 10 Best New Management Books for 2022 by Thinkers50 A Wall Street Journal Bestseller "...this guide provides readers with much more than just early careers advice; it can help everyone from interns to CEOs." — a Financial Times top title You've landed a job. Now what? No one tells you how to navigate your first day in a new role. No one tells you how to take ownership, manage expectations, or handle workplace politics. No one tells you how to get promoted. The answers to these professional unknowns lie in the unspoken rules—the certain ways of doing things that managers expect but don't explain and that top performers do but don't realize. The problem is, these rules aren't taught in school. Instead, they get passed down over dinner or from mentor to mentee, making for an unlevel playing field, with the insiders getting ahead and the outsiders stumbling along through trial and error. Until now. In this practical guide, Gorick Ng, a first-generation college student and Harvard career adviser, demystifies the unspoken rules of work. Ng distills the wisdom he has gathered from over five hundred interviews with professionals across industries and job types about the biggest mistakes people make at work. Loaded with frameworks, checklists, and talking points, the book provides concrete strategies you can apply immediately to your own situation and will help you navigate inevitable questions, such as: How do I manage my time in the face of conflicting priorities? How do I build relationships when I’m working remotely? How do I ask for help without looking incompetent or lazy? The Unspoken Rules is the only book you need to perform your best, stand out from your peers, and set yourself up for a fulfilling career.
