This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swabian German Romantic poet, medical doctor, scientist, and investigator of parapsychological phenomena Justinus Kerner (1786–1862) has long been celebrated as one of the leading intellectuals of his time. His renowned study of a local clairvoyant, Die Seherin von Prevorst [The Seeress of Prevorst] (1829), was translated into English as early as 1845 by the English writer, Catherine Crowe. Encouraged by the Romantic interest in childhood, Kerner in later life wrote a book of youthful reminiscences under the title Bilderbuch aus meiner Knabenzeit [Sketches from My Boyhood] (1849). Inspired by such well-known memoirs of youth as Goethe’s Dichtung und Wahrheit [Poetry and Truth] and Jung-Stilling’s Heinrich Stillings Leben [The Life of Heinrich Stilling], Kerner’s Sketches is a much shorter, more modest account of his boyhood years in the Duchy (then Kingdom) of Württemberg. Consisting of eighty-six loosely related sketches, or vignettes, Sketches from My Boyhood is a vivid, charming, often entertaining, sometimes serious, narrative of growing up in, above all, Ludwigsburg, the site of the magnificent Ludwigsburg Palace. Although emphasizing primarily the personal facets of his early life, Kerner does not ignore the ever-present reality of the French Revolution and its impact on such German states as Württemberg. Sketches from My Boyhood merits its recognition as a gem of nineteenth-century German autobiographical writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johann Wolfgang Goethe was a German poet, novelist and philosopher who became an eminent figure in the movement of Weimar Classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This book, which was first published in 1875, takes its focal text from the first three books of his Knabenjahre (autobiography). It was originally arranged and edited by the late Dr W. Wagner, with this second edition being prepared in 1890 by J. W. Cartmell of Christ's College, Cambridge. Although the text itself appears in its original German, meticulous notes from both editors make Goethe's Boyhood endlessly accessible to students of German language and literature. The editors have also provided a detailed family tree of the writer and thinker to give this rich and engaging text a useful contextual background.
Download or read book Goethe written by A. N. Wilson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A. N. Wilson's biography of the German polymath is wild, brilliant and has all the intelligence to rival its subject' - Frances Wilson, the Telegraph 'Rich and full and passionate and intelligent and deeply needed for these murky times' – Ben Okri 'Exuberant and wide-ranging' - Miranda Seymour, author of The Haunted Life of Jean Rhys A spellbinding recreation of Goethe's life and work from one of our greatest biographers. Goethe was the inventor of the psychological novel, a pioneer scientist, great man of the theatre and a leading politician. As A. N. Wilson argues in this groundbreaking biography, it was his genius and insatiable curiosity that helped catapult the Western world into the modern era. A N. Wilson tackles the life of Goethe with characteristic wit and verve. From his youth as a wild literary prodigy to his later years as Germany's most respected elder statesman, Wilson hones in on Goethe's undying obsession with the work he would spend his entire life writing – Faust. Goethe spent over 60 years writing his retelling of Faust, a strange and powerful work that absorbed all the philosophical questions of his time as well as the revolutions and empires that came and went. It is his greatest work, but as Wilson explores, it is also something much more - it is the myth of how we came to be modern.

Book Synopsis Goethe and the Greeks by : Humphry Trevelyan
Download or read book Goethe and the Greeks written by Humphry Trevelyan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981-10-15 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The revolution that is going on in me is that which has taken place in every artist who has studied Nature long and diligently and now seeks the remains of the great spirit of antiquity; his soul wells up, he feels a transfiguration of himself from within, a feeling of freer life, higher existence, lightness and grace.' It is Mr Trevelyan's purpose, in this profoundly interesting book, to trace the course of this development in Goethe, to determine its extent, to test its sincerity. To this task he brings, not only a complete knowledge of Goethe's life and works and of classical literature, but also a fine critical sense which enables him to direct his detailed knowledge towards a philosophical conclusion.' So wrote Herbert Read in The Spectator in December 1941 on the first publication of Goethe and the Greeks. Trevalyan's account of Goethe's fascination with the Greeks, his striving to master their culture, his vision of Hellenic man, is judged not to have been supplanted by any later work in English. Professor Lloyd-Jones has written a substantial Foreword for this reissue of Trevelyan's book, giving his own assessment of Goethe's search for Hellenism and its influence on his work.
