Download or read book Goethe's Ghosts written by Simon Richter and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2013 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invoking Goethe's name has become fashionable again. With new methods and technologies of reading threatening to render literature virtual and insubstantial, we have the sense that 'Goethe's ghosts' - the otherwise neglected voices and traditions that, finding their most trenchant expression in Goethe, inform the Western storehouse of literature - can show us long-forgotten dimensions of literature. Inspired by the distinguished Goethe scholar Jane Brown, the contributors to this volume take a rich variety of approaches to Goethe: cultural studies, history of the book, semiotics, deconstruction, colonial studies, feminism, childhood studies, and eco-criticism.

Book Synopsis The Transcultural Critic: Sabahattin Ali and Beyond by : Seyda Ozil
Download or read book The Transcultural Critic: Sabahattin Ali and Beyond written by Seyda Ozil and published by Göttingen University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this volume is the work of Sabahattin Ali, the Turkish author and translator from German into Turkish who achieved posthumous success with his novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (The Madonna in the Fur Coat). Our contributors analyze this novel, which takes place largely in Germany, and several other texts by Ali in the context of world literature, (cultural) translation, and intertextuality. Their articles go far beyond the intercultural love affair that has typically dominated the discussion of Madonna. Other articles consider Zafer Şenocak’s essay collection Deutschsein and transcultural learning through picture books. An interview with Selim Özdoğan rounds out the issue.

Book Synopsis Europa und die Türkei im 18. Jahrhundert by : Barbara Schmidt-Haberkamp
Download or read book Europa und die Türkei im 18. Jahrhundert written by Barbara Schmidt-Haberkamp and published by V&R unipress GmbH. This book was released on 2011 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: The contributions to this volume explore intercultural contacts and the reciprocal perceptions between Turkey and Europe in the eighteenth century. 'The dangerous Turk', one of the most antagonistic narratives in early modern times, lost impact after the Ottoman defeat in the second siege of Vienna 1683. The image of the Turk changed from the menacing, invincible terror of Christendom to that of a quaint and exotic neighbour. The result was a broad, partly euphoric acceptance and blending of Ottoman culture into the political, scientific, economic and aesthetic discourses of the eighteenth century. Conversely, the European impact on the socio-political and cultural life of the Ottoman Empire increased at the beginning of the eighteenth century. From the perspective of a variety of different academic disciplines, the contributions to this volume explore the following questions: What possibilities were there to form an idea of the other and to what extent was this idea founded on autistic self-assertion on the one hand, on curiosity and creative appropriation on the other? What forms of intercultural contacts existed and how have they been documented? german description: Thema dieses Bandes sind die interkulturellen Kontakte und die wechselseitige Wahrnehmung zwischen der Turkei und Europa im 18. Jahrhundert.
