Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why Meditate? The practice of meditation takes us on a fabulous journey into the gap between our thoughts, where all the advantages of a more peaceful, stress-free, healthy, and fatigue-free life are available—but they’re merely side benefits. The paramount reason for daily meditation is to get into the gap between our thoughts and make conscious contact with the creative energy of life itself. In this uplifting book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer explains the soul-nourishing meditation technique for making conscious contact with God, which the ancient masters have told us about. You have all the potential to be an instrument of the highest good for all concerned and to be a literal miracle worker in your own life. No person, government entity, or religious group can legitimately claim to do this for you. "In fact," says Dr. Dyer, "I agree with Carl Jung, who said that one of the main functions of formalized religion is to protect people against a direct experience of God." (Dr. Dyer helps you have this direct experience by leading you through the meditation technique in the accompanying audio download.) When you master getting into the gap, stay there for prolonged segments of meditation, and experience what you bring back into the world, you’ll truly know the answer to the question: "Why meditate?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay offers a critical appreciation and comparison of the theological and philosophical position of Karl Barth and St. Thomas Aquinas. Mr. Fairweather's thesis is the essential mediacy of God's self-presentation to men. He maintains, as against Aquinas, that human finitude does not preclude acquaintance with the divine nature; and as against Barth, that man through grace is truly capax verbi Domini. In his comparison the scales are weighted heavily against Barth. He maintains that Barth's presuppositions (e.g., the radical discontinuity of the human and the divine), arise from a Manichaean rather than from a Christian source; and that, carried to the extremes to which Barth is prepared at times to carry them, they rob the Bible of all value for revelation; the Incarnation and the Cross of all value for human life; and the idea of revelation itself of any kinship with the idea of Truth. At the same time, while pointing out the extravagances, dangers and interior contradictions of the Barthian position, Mr. Fairweather recognizes the corrective value of his absolutist theology, and concludes that the Thomist position as regards revelation, though it is the more soundly based of the two, needs to be supplemented by the Barthian emphasis on the real presence of God in His Word.

Book excerpt: Over the centuries, European debate about the nature and status of images of God and sacred figures has often upset the established order and shaken societies to their core. Out of this debate, an identifiable doctrine has emerged of the image in general and of the divine image in particular. This fascinating work concentrates on these historical arguments, from the period of Late Antiquity up to the great and classic defenses of images by St. John of Damascus and Theodore of Studion. Icon extends beyond the immediate concerns of religion, philosophy, aesthetics, history, and art, to engage them all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I picked it up out of curiosity and I couldn’t put it down."--Eugene Peterson Christians are comfortable saying that Christianity is about a relationship with God. Yet many might also say that they sense little meaningful relationship with God in their own lives. After all, the foundation of good relationship is communication—-but conversation with God often seems to go only one way. We may sing of walking and talking with God in the garden, His voice falling on our ears, but few have heard that beloved voice themselves. Sam Williamson acknowledges the fundamental human longing to hear God’s voice and offers a hopeful supposition: God is always speaking—-we’ve just never been taught how to recognize His voice. Williamson handles this potentially heady topic with his characteristic straightforwardness and leavening humor. This book deftly bridges the gap between solid biblical theology and practical application, addressing topics such as how to truly pray without ceasing, how to brainstorm with God, how to navigate our emotions, how to answer God’s questions, and how to hear God’s voice for others. Hearing God in Conversation offers simple, step-by-step lessons on how to hear God. Williamson begins with Scripture meditation. He then expands the practice of listening for that voice everywhere—in the checkout line, on the job, in a movie theater, and even in silence. From there, he demonstrates how to hear God’s guidance when making any decision. By the end, readers’ eyes and ears will be opened to the limitless methods through which God speaks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consuming desire of all true Christians is to be like Christ Jesus. Without doubt, such holy ambition is inspired by the Holy Spirit. For it is God’s eternal will that all who are called by Him are to be conformed to the image of His beloved Son. Yet how ironical it is that most Christians seem to undergo great frustration in failing to reach that goal. Does God plan it that way or do we fail to know and appropriate the provision of God? Thank God, He never calls without providing. Therefore, it behooves us to enter into the secret of Christian living. Truth is always simple in nature. This entire secret of Christian living is given in two simple phrases, which are: “in Christ” and “Christ in us.” In this present volume, brother Watchman Nee presents the secret of Christian living in three parts; namely, in Christ, Christ in us, and some applications. These are messages given mainly from 1934 to 1938 in various cities of China. They are more direct, more illustrative and easier to understand. It can be viewed as a companion volume to the classic, The Normal Christian Life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystery cults are one of the most intriguing areas of Greek and Roman religion. In the nocturnal mysteries at Eleusis, participants dramatically re-enacted the story of Demeter's loss and recovery of her daughter Persephone; in Bacchic cult, bands of women ran wild in the Greek countryside to honour Dionysus; in the mysteries of Mithras, men came to understand the nature of the universe and their place within it through frightening initiation ceremonies and astrological teachings. These cults were an important part of life in the ancient Mediterranean world, but their actual practices were shrouded in secrecy, and much of what they were about has remained unclear until now. This is the first book to describe and explain all the major mystery cults of the ancient world, cult by cult, reconstructing the rituals and exploring their origins. It makes plentiful use of artistic and archaeological evidence, as well as ancient literature and epigraphy. Greek painted pottery, Roman frescoes, inscribed gold tablets from Greek and South Italian tombs and the excavated sites of ancient religious sanctuaries all contribute to our understanding of ancient mystery cults. Making use of the most recent work on these cults, the book is also informed by crucial current work on the anthropology and cognitive science of religion. Not only is this clearly written book a significant contribution to the study of these cults, but it is also accessible to a general readership. More than any other book on ancient religion, it allows the reader to understand what it was like to participate in these life-transforming religious events.
