Doesn’t the Bible forbid homosexuality? As Paul struggles with Manuel’s interpretation of the Bible, thoughts that Paul has long tried to bury begin to surface, and he finds himself re-examining his whole life. This is an unforgettable book on an extremely timely topic that strives to open minds on both ends of the spectrum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While atheists such as Richard Dawkins have now become public figures, there is another and perhaps darker strain of religious rebellion that has remained out of sight--people who hate God. In this revealing book, Bernard Schweizer looks at men and women who do not question God's existence, but deny that He is merciful, competent, or good. Sifting through a wide range of literary and historical works, Schweizer finds that people hate God for a variety of reasons. Some are motivated by social injustice, human suffering, or natural catastrophes that God does not prevent. Some blame God for their personal tragedies. Schweizer concludes that, despite their blasphemous thoughts, these people tend to be creative and moral individuals, and include such literary lights as Friedrich Nietzsche, Mark Twain, Zora Neale Hurston, Rebecca West, Elie Wiesel, and Philip Pullman. Schweizer shows that literature is a fertile ground for God haters. Many authors, who dare not voice their negative attitude to God openly, turn to fiction to give vent to it. Indeed, Schweizer provides many new and startling readings of literary masterpieces, highlighting the undercurrent of hatred for God. Moreover, by probing the deeper mainsprings that cause sensible, rational, and moral beings to turn against God, Schweizer offers answers to some of the most vexing questions that beset human relationships with the divine.

Book excerpt: From bus rides to bars, to encounters with friends and family and most importantly with strangers, Larry Gross lives his life out loud by drawing on the small slices of life, the little things most people don’t notice. “There is no artifice in Gross’s art. What distinguishes his writing is his knack for seeing and hearing things worth remembering. His pastiche draws on the commonality of urban life, with many of his stories set in downtown bars or on the buses that take him there. The main character is No One Special, a person who appears in various guises, capable of both unfettered generosity and burdensome peevishness.” Gregory Flannery, Managing Editor, Streetvibes

Book excerpt: I have lost a lot in my life, starting with my parents divorcing at an early age. I was shunned by friends and neighbors. It was a different time in the 50s. Things didn't get much better in the 60s, and I cultivated a lot of anger from being left out and not counted. I earned a lot of respect in the army as a Ranger, but that all changed after I returned home to a general consensus that we were all really bad. I have had three failed marriages. I rarely got to see my children, and that cultivated even more anger. In my second marriage, we did a lot of boating, fishing, and scuba diving. After seventeen years, that went south too. You guessed it--more anger. My third marriage was wrong from the beginning, but I got to have horses and be a rancher in the Rocky Mountains. That ended badly as well. I met a wonderful woman in 2013, and we've been together ever since. When she got cancer three years ago, it humbled me and changed my life. I began to read the Bible, learn how to pray, and start getting past the anger. This book tells the story of how I got here and what I've done to change all that hate and anger and become a better person. I continue to learn more every day and make progress through these efforts. If it can work for me, it can work for you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pack a dramatic, spiritual, and emotional punch with your story! Novelist Krista Wagner presents a story-structure guide for writers to explore and create a world of spiritual dramatic suspense. Using one of her stories as a template, she walks you through how to craft a tension-infused story that hits all the reader's expectations. In this reader-friendly book, Wagner introduces the spiritual dramatic suspense genre and then shows you how to: * Create a compelling novel by establishing and maintaining the facets of this genre throughout your story, including the pivotal plot points like: riveting red herrings and persuasive peak tensions, dead on pacing, dynamic and functional setting and tone, and tantalizing twists. * Create irresistible characters with internal and external conflicts, believable flaws, and tension-infused dialogue. * Test a character's faith, delicately handling the hard truths of life, capturing the spiritual struggle, and articulating victory over despair/adversity. * Keep the reader tied into the story without being preachy or author intrusive. Wagner provides commentary on the various aspects, themes, and tropes of the genre as she takes you on a journey through one of her spiritual dramatic suspense novels (Intent: Deadly Secrets) to make the experience concrete and hands-on. At the end of each chapter, you will find an exercise specially designed to implement the various facets in your own work such as increasing tension, crafting complicated twists, externalizing a character's thoughts, and developing a believable character arc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Untangling the various approaches to language teaching and their history, Gerdi Quist maps recent thinking in language studies at university. Using an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, drawn from educational philosophy, cultural studies, intercultural studies and language pedagogy, the author discusses the many tensions and currents in contemporary language teaching. The author puts forward an alternative pedagogy, that of a cultuurtekstperspective, which engages learners at complex linguistic and cultural levels. In discussing the case study in which this approach is tested, the author develops her argument for embracing various critical perspectives through the personal engagement of students. From the start the author acknowledges her own engaged position as a language teacher in a liberal humanistic educational environment. She adopts a self-critical perspective through which her engagement with adverse student reaction leads to deepening insights both for the author and her students as part of the non-linear process of learning. ‘This book should be obligatory reading for all new lecturers in foreign languages at university. It is extremely thought-provoking and will help them make sense of the world in which they find themselves.’ Jane Fenoulhet (Professor in Dutch Studies and co-editor of Mobility and Localisation in Language Learning)

Book excerpt: Although Portland, Maine, CPA Ellen Hartman knows her meeting with valued client and grieving father, Dr. Tom Reynolds, will be difficult, she’s not prepared for the bombshell he drops. As if it’s not bad enough that Tom and Lucy’s young son, Ben, is dead after embarking on a solo journey on the family sailboat, now Tom has just been fired from the surgical practice he founded and nurtured for thirty years. When Ellen learns she has been fired as the practice’s accountant, she questions why his partners have turned against them. Are they hiding something, and if so, what? To complicate matters, Lucy is suspicious about the real cause of her son’s death. Now there are two mysteries to unravel. Are they related? She enlists her right-hand accountant, feisty, whip-smart Julie Benoit, to hold down the fort in Portland while Ellen and Lucy travel to Miami Beach to search Ben’s sailboat for answers to his suspicious death. Julie uses the opportunity to employ questionable research techniques that lead to a surprising revelation. Will they find resolution to both mysteries and help Tom and Lucy navigate through grief to find their way back to each other?
