Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's City and the Coming of the Kingdom The Church of God - everything conspires to make this the immediate subject round which all religious discussions turn, and towards which all the profoundest spiritual interests are set. Socially, we are compelled to demand a corporate Christian society. Individualistic forms of belief have become impossible. Intellectually and dogmatically, it has become increasingly clear that in the fact of the Incarnation lies the secret of Christ. And, when once the attention is concentrated on the Incarnation, the old argument, so excellently rehearsed by F. D. Maurice in "The Kingdom of Christ," begins to bite home. Download or read book City of God written by Augustine Of Hippo and published by Limovia.Net. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents human history as being a conflict between what Augustine calls the City of Man and the City of God, a conflict that is destined to end in victory of the latter. The City of God is marked by people who forgot earthly pleasure to dedicate themselves to the eternal truths of God, now revealed fully in the Christian faith. The City of Man, on the other hand, consists of people who have immersed themselves in the cares and pleasures of the present, passing world. Though The City of God follows Christian theology, the main idea of a conflict between good and evil follows from Augustine's former beliefs in Manichaeanism. A philosophy based on the idea of primordial conflict between light and darkness or goodness and evil. In the case of City of God, it is the City of God (representing light) and the City of Man (representing darkness). Though his book follows an ideology of Manichaeanism, he still distances himself from them by calling them heretics: ..". I say, so just and fit, which, when piously and carefully weighed, terminates all the controversies of those who inquire into the origin of the world, has not been recognized by some heretics ..." Later, when Augustine converted to Christianity he at one point accepted Neo-Platonism. He ends up adding an idea of Neo-Platonism with a Christian idea in The City of God when he says: "As for those who own, indeed, that it was made by God, and yet ascribe to it not a temporal but only a creational beginning ..."

Someone has aptly said, "What a sea of blood and tears rolls between us and the redemption of Israel!" AH of the plagues and judgments in the book of Revelation must come upon the earth before that is fully accomplished. The Day Of The Lord. The following scriptures show that the Day of the Lord is the tribulation period that immediately precedes the coming of the Lord. Amos. 5:18-24, "Woe unto you that desire the Day of the Lord. To what end is it for you? The Day of the Lord is darkness, and not light. As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. Shall not the Day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?" Joel 2:1, 2, 11, "Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the Day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand; a day of darkness and of gloominess, as the morning spread upon the mountains. The day of the Lord is great and very terrible, and who can abide it?" Zeph. 1:14-18, "The great Day of the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the Day of the Lord; the mighty man shall cry bitterly. That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the Lord, and their blood shall be poured out as the dust, and their flesh as the dung. Neither their silver nor...

Download or read book The City of God, Vol. 2 written by Saint Augustine (of Hippo) and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of God, Vol. 2: De Civitate Dei But here is a question not to be omitted: whether the first death be good to the good? If it be so, how can it be the punishment of sin? For had not our first parents sinned, they had never tasted it: how then can it be good to the upright that can happen only to offenders? And if it happen only to Offenders, it would not be good, for it would not be at all unto the upright: for why should they have punishment that have no guilt? We must confess, then, that had not our first parents sinned, they had not died but sinning, the punishment of death was inflicted upon them and all their posterity: for they should not produce anything but what themselves were, and the greatness of their crime depraved their nature: so that that which was penal in the first man's Offending, was made natural in the birth Of all the rest: for they came not of man, as man came of the dust. The dust was man's material: but man is man's parent. That which is earth is not flesh, though flesh be made of earth: but that which man the father is, man the son is also. For all mankind was in the first man, to be derived from him by the woman, when this couple received their sentence of condemnation. And that which man was made, not in his creation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our City of God Yet with all its defects, what great and eternally true things are there in his conception The view of world-history as the continuous unfolding of a Divine purpose; of world-policies, moralities, and economies as being rooted finally ln Spiritual principles of the State as subordinate to an invisible power that is higher than itself - does not all this remain to us not only august and venerable, but as essentially valid? Augustinianism needs and has received in our' time rigorous revision. But its root idea holds. It is the only one that covers humanity; that accounts for its history, and gives to its institutions and government their true basis. Book Synopsis The Government of God (Classic Reprint) by : John Taylor
Download or read book The Government of God (Classic Reprint) written by John Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of God It was Elder Taylor's intention to superintend the publishing of "The Government of God" in person, previous to his departure for Great Salt Lake City last spring; but the numerous cares attending the French and German Missions, of which he was President; the translation of the Book of Mormon into the French and German languages; the establishment of L'Etiole du Deseret at Paris, and Zions Panier at Hamburg; together with a multitude of other business connected with the welfare of the Kingdom of God, rendered it impossible. The manuscript was therefore handed to me by Elder Taylor, with a request to superintend the printing of the work, which I have done to the best of my ability. Considering the disadvantages arising from the Author's absence during the reading of the proofs, I believe it is as correctly rendered as was possible from a manuscript copy. The Work is now before the Public, and from one portion at least it will meet with a cordial reception, treating as it does upon the theme most dear to their hearts - the Reign of Righteousness and Peace.
