Book excerpt: Modern culture tends to separate medicine and miracles, but their histories are closely intertwined. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes saints through canonization based on evidence that they worked miracles, as signs of their proximity to God. Physicianhistorian Jacalyn Duffin has examined Vatican sources on 1400 miracles from six continents and spanning four centuries. Overwhelmingly the miracles cited in canonizations between 1588 and 1999 are healings, and the majority entail medical care and physician testimony. These remarkable records contain intimate stories of illness, prayer, and treatment, as told by people who rarely leave traces: peasants and illiterates, men and women, old and young. A woman's breast tumor melts away; a man's wounds knit; a lame girl suddenly walks; a dead baby revives. Suspicious of wishful thinking or na ve enthusiasm, skeptical clergy shaped the inquiries to identify recoveries that remain unexplained by the best doctors of the era. The tales of healing are supplemented with substantial testimony from these physicians. Some elements of the miracles change through time. Duffin shows that doctors increase in number; new technologies are embraced quickly; diagnoses shift with altered capabilities. But other aspects of the miracles are stable. The narratives follow a dramatic structure, shaped by the formal questions asked of each witness and by perennial reactions to illness and healing. In this history, medicine and religion emerge as parallel endeavors aimed at deriving meaningful signs from particular instances of human distress -- signs to explain, alleviate, and console in confrontation with suffering and mortality. A lively, sweeping analysis of a fascinating set of records, this book also poses an exciting methodological challenge to historians: miracle stories are a vital source not only on the thoughts and feelings of ordinary people, but also on medical science and its practitioners.

Book excerpt: "Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you" (Mt. 7:7). Most people think miracles only happen in movies or the Bible and their prayer lives reflect this belief as well. Father Stefan Starzynski reminds us through his personal experience and real stories that God is ever present, and that miracles are among the gifts offered to those who petition Him in faith. Father Starzynski's life is an account of God's ability to use imperfect human instruments like him -- and you -- to carry out His will. Father Starzynski recounts numerous episodes when he personally experienced miracles, often in totally unexpected places. His riveting stories of tiny infants facing life-threatening medical conditions, of people battling demons and disease, of his own experience overcoming depression, and more, will inspire, instruct, and provide hope for all. Experience the miraculous testimonies from over twenty individuals and families whose lives have been touched by God through Father Starzynski's ministry, as well as helpful appendices on topics like Medjugorje, Saint Therese, and a section of prayers. "Miracles abound in this heartfelt book. Father Stefan Starzynski takes you on a tour of miracles, big and small, and illustrates how to find them in your own life." --Raymond Arroyo, New York Times best-selling author of Mother Angelica and host of EWTN's "The World Over Live" Author royalties from the sales of Miracles: Healing for a Broken World will be donated to the Paul Stefan Home for Expectant Mothers www.paulstefanhome.org.

Book excerpt: Reuben Archer Torrey's inspiring work on God's power to work miracles in our daily lives is presented here in large print, that all readers may comprehend and appreciate its lessons. The question of God's presence in our everyday lives is one which frequently occurs in the minds of Christians. Does He still perform healing miracles upon the faithful on Earth? How does the Lord make himself known among us? Is His presence sometimes obvious, or must we always look closer to see the subtle works of God around us? Although brief, this work of R. A. Torrey seeks to answer these questions definitively and wisely, and throughout the author carries a profound tone that few live to acquire. By the time this book was published in 1924, Torrey was already in his late sixties, and lifetime of achievement as a writer, a preacher, and above all a Christian lay behind him; his rich educative wisdom was thus appreciated by many believers. Today, many of Torrey's finest writings are again finding their way to Christians wishing for new perspectives upon matters of faith. Divine Healing, which cites scripture to aid its explanations of the properties of healing miracles described in the Bible, retains both its relevance and poignancy in the modern day.

One of the worlds most famous healers, Joao de Dues (John of God), cares for hundreds and sometimes thousands of people daily, usually at eh Casa and occasionally in other parts of Brazil. Over the past four decades he has treated millions of people! Numerous cures of cancer, AIDS, blindness, asthma, drug addiction and other physical problems as well as psychological and spiritual illnesses have occurred through his work. Joao does not take credit for these miracles. With true humility, he says he has never healed anyone, but that it is God who heals. If this is the case, Joao is a singularly powerful medium of Gods work and love and an invaluable resource for those seeking healing of body, mind or spirit. The luminous and breathtaking stories within this book will stretch the beliefs of some readers, affirm and deepen the faith of others. All will receive empowering information for their own personal healing. Author Josie RavenWing has one again succeeded in combining the practical and the mystical in this, her third and most exciting book yet!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early on in my study, it became evident that Mark was not simply recounting the healing incidents that Jesus had performed. Mark looked at the healing miracles of Jesus through the lens of God’s perspective. What was significant to Mark and what captured my spiritual imagination was his interpretation of the healing miracles. He made it clear to the readers that Jesus clearly understood the redemptive implications of his mission as the Jewish healer-redeemer. Jesus fully embraced his Messianic mission to bring salvation to the Hebrew people. He would become the perfect sacrificial lamb of God to bring about the restoration of fallen humanity. In and through him, God’s good creation would be restored. Through Jesus’ sacrificial death, God would create a new covenant of grace, which could be acceptable to both Jews and Gentiles. The healing miracles demonstrated the defeat of sin, sickness, death, and the evil influence of Satan’s demonic forces. Jesus did this by not only removing our sins but also taking the consequences of our sins upon himself, nailing them to the cross. All of Jesus’ healing miracles were interpreted similarly. I found Mark’s gospel both inspiring and informative, allowing me to see the heart, love, compassion, and mind of God for His creation.

Book excerpt: God's Spirit is everywhere. Miracles Every Day is the story of Dr. Issam Nemeh, a Cleveland-based physician and devout Catholic who has prayed over tens of thousands of people from all faiths and all walks of life in the past two decades. The result? Miracles. Injuries healed, cancers cured, sight and hearing restored. Yet, as Dr. Nemeh will be the first to point out, “the miracles are just to get our attention.” The healings do not originate from him, but from God. It is this humility and dedication to those in need that have won him the respect and trust of laypeople and religious leaders alike. This inspiring chronicle, beautifully told by author Maura Poston Zagrans, traces the lives of the doctor and his dedicated wife, Kathy, and brings us the uplifting stories of the many people who have been healed through one man's powerful faith. Miracles Every Day is a compelling reminder of God's individual and unconditional love for each one of us. Along the way you will meet the dedicated family members, volunteers, and clergy who support the Nemehs in their work. They speak of a ministry of hope, of lives changed and saved through not just the power of prayer, but through the awesome Spirit-driven power of love.
