Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a nuanced picture with specific instances of religion and politics in Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, and Hindu contexts, broadly presenting the phenomenon of religion and politics via country and thematic case studies. Qualitative, quantitative, material, philosophical, and theological analyses draw upon social theory to show how (and why) religion matters deeply in each time and place. The authors and contributors demonstrate that religion is a significant force that drives societies and polities around the world, and that a radical change in the Western understanding of value-driven global politics is needed. Beyond the Death of God offers new, local voices to Western audiences—through essays that suggest the need for an appreciation of Divinity as a quintessence holding a significant place in the hearts, minds, social orders, and political organization of polities around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of articles written by the author, which range through the Christian doctrines of creation, the human soul, the Eucharist, and life after death, which have always been centres of discussion by philosophers and theologians. They discuss the right way to approach theological issues. They offer a distinctive approach to ethical questions that arise in controversy between different religious traditions, and between religious and secular thinkers generally. And they consider the place of faith in religious thinking and the weight that should be given to authority and tradition. The volume carries a new general introduction to the collection.

Book excerpt: How are we as Christians called to respond when cancer invades our lives, whether our own bodies or those of our friends and family? On the eve of his own cancer surgery, John Piper writes about cancer as an opportunity to glorify God. With pastoral sensitivity, compassion, and strength, Piper gently but firmly acknowledges that we can indeed waste our cancer when we don’t see how it is God’s good plan for us and a hope-filled path for making much of Jesus. Don’t Waste Your Cancer is for anyone touched by a life-threatening illness. It first appeared as an appendix in Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. Repackaged and republished, it will serve as a hope-giving resource for healthcare workers, pastors, counselors, and others caring for those with cancer and other serious illnesses. The booklets are also available in packs of ten.

And so it is profoundly important to understand how to approach and experience these occasions with grace, endurance, and joy. In a culture that does its best to deny death, Timothy Keller--theologian and bestselling author--teaches us about facing death with the resources of faith from the Bible. With wisdom and compassion, Keller finds in the Bible an alternative to both despair or denial. A short, powerful book, On Death gives us the tools to understand the meaning of death within God's vision of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Award of Excellence of the Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship 2010. The teaching of Kenyon, Hagin and Copeland that Jesus ‘died spiritually’ (JDS) is important because of the influence of these men, not least on Pentecostalism. JDS originated with Kenyon, and has been taught in the Word-faith movement by Hagin and Copeland, despite much criticism. It incorporates three elements: in this death, Jesus was separated from God; partook of a satanic nature; and was Satan’s prey. This theological appraisal takes research far further than previous works, both in method and in scope. It concludes that adoption of JDS by Pentecostalism would be damaging in several respects, and thus draw the latter away from its moorings in traditional Christianity. Pentecostals and others are advised to reject the bulk of this teaching.

Paul Badham explores the grounds on which the hope of immortality, central for Christian doctrine, can be revitalized today. He suggests that the possibility of a relationship between God and human beings is confirmed by our religious experience, and that resurrection and immortality need each other. Includes chapters on the evidential value of near-death experiences, concepts of heaven, and arguments against belief in hell.

Book excerpt: Over half of Americans believe in a literal heaven, in a literal hell. Most people who hold these beliefs are Christian and assume they are the age-old teachings of the Bible. Ehrman shows that eternal rewards and punishments are found nowhere in the Old Testament, and are not what Jesus or his disciples taught. He recounts the long history of the afterlife, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh up to the writings of Augustine, focusing especially on the teachings of Jesus and his early followers. Ehrman shows that competing views were intimately connected with the social, cultural, and historical worlds out of which they emerged. -- adapted from jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been assumed that the more modern we become, the less religious we will be. Yet a recent resurrection in faith has challenged the certainty of this belief. In these original essays and interviews, leading hermeneutical philosophers and postmodern theorists John D. Caputo and Gianni Vattimo engage with each other's past and present work on the subject and reflect on our transition from secularism to postsecularism. As two of the figures who have contributed the most to the theoretical reflections on the contemporary philosophical turn to religion, Caputo and Vattimo explore the changes, distortions, and reforms that are a part of our postmodern faith and the forces shaping the religious imagination today. Incisively and imaginatively connecting their argument to issues ranging from terrorism to fanaticism and from politics to media and culture, these thinkers continue to reinvent the field of hermeneutic philosophy with wit, grace, and passion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considers the legacy and future of radical theology. In 1966, an infamous Time magazine cover asked “Is God Dead?” and brought the ideas of theologians William Hamilton and Thomas J. J. Altizer to the wider public. In the years that followed, both men suffered professionally and there was no notable increase to the small number of thinkers considered death of God theologians. Meanwhile, Christian fundamentalism staged a striking comeback in the United States. Yet, death of God, or radical, theology has had an ongoing influence on contemporary theology and philosophy. Contributors to this book explore the origins, influence, and legacy of radical theology and go on to take it in new directions. In a time when fundamentalism is the greatest religious temptation, this volume makes the case for the necessity of resurrecting the death of God. Daniel J. Peterson is an Instructor at Seattle University and the author of Tillich: A Brief Overview of the Life and Writings of Paul Tillich. G. Michael Zbaraschuk is Assistant Professor of Religion at Pacific Lutheran University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “God is love is the radical claim of Christianity,” writes Frederick Bauerschmidt at the beginning of this little meditation on the essentials of Christian faith. In a rich yet accessible style reminiscent of C. S. Lewis and G. K. Chesterton, Bauerschmidt breathes life back into that claim, drawing from Scripture, great Christian and non-Christian writers of the past, and his own lived experience to show just how countercultural and subversive Christianity is actually meant to be. Eschewing the abstract and dogmatic in favor of the relational and inviting, he offers something for everyone, from lifelong churchgoers and students of religion to the growing population of “nones” among younger generations who are increasingly seeking spiritual fulfillment outside of institutional Christianity. With further reading suggestions (both scriptural and nonscriptural) at the end of each chapter, The Love That Is God is the perfect starting point of a spiritual journey into deeper relationship with God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians today celebrate many Religious ceremonies without having an understanding of what the ceremonies they celebrate entail. Were it not for a seasonal celebration of sort, many Christians could attend Church services for one whole year without listening to one single message on the death and resurrection of Christ which form the core of our Christian faith. Had Christ not died and resurrected, we will be exactly like any other religious sect or organization but alas, the empty tomb is there to prove that because he lives, we have hope that we too shall live."And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins" 1 Cor. 15:17After his death and resurrection, in order not to make known the manifestation of God's power, Matthew 28:12-15 state that money was given to the soldiers to scuttle the resurrection story but they failed! Till today, a lot of messages still go on even from several pulpits, with focus on money matters, relegating resurrection matters! This is an error. The resurrection story and the benefits of the resurrection ought to be on the forefront of all messages. This book exposes the benefits of the resurrection to everybody who will decide to believe and appropriate what Jesus has done.1. We have redemption through his blood."In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins" Colossians 1:142. As we bear witness like the Apostles, to his resurrection, the power of his resurrection manifests in our lives.3. The resurrection is our hope of eternal life.4. The resurrection shows us that there is no impossibility with God as he is the one that calls non existent things into existence and quickens or gives life to everything that may be dead even in our lives.5. The power of his resurrection is the greatest power in the universe. This power is backing us therefore, we have nothing to fear in any way.6.The resurrection has placed Christ far above principalities and powers. In him, we too have been placed far above principalities and powers. The implication is that we can no longer afford to cower under them in fear. When you are positionally above someone, they take orders from you not the other way round. You must continue to enforce your superior position over them and not allow them mess around your life.7.The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ resulted in his exaltation - he has the highest name in heaven, earth and beneath the earth."And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen" Matthew 28:18-20Jesus, the one who has the greatest name and the one to whom all power and authority in heaven, earth and beneath the earth belong to has sent us all on an assignment. He did not leave us alone; he says he is with us till the end of the world. What a benefit to know that you have the authority of the universe behind you. There is no limitation of any sort. By his death and resurrection, all authority given to us has been consolidated. You can make pronouncements and declarations in his name and see them come to pass. Hallelujah!8. "He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil" 1 John 3:8He came to destroy the works of the devil and the devil himself. Every activity of satan stands destroyed in your life. You are now in charge, there is nothing to fear. Don't miss this book, buy your copy now!
