Book excerpt: Many great players and many great characters have played for Gloucester Rugby in the 149 years of the Club's history. Choosing the 375 players to include in this book was not an easy task. The reader will find that all players who have made 100 First XV appearances are included, as are all players who played for their country while members of the Club. All club captains are also included and a number of colourful characters and loyal club servants who were keen to play for the First or Second XVs each Saturday (or wet Wednesday evening) throughout long careers. An appendix contains the career statistics of all 1,985 players known to have appeared for the Gloucester 1st XV. The contributors to this book are all members of Gloucester Rugby Heritage, a charity run by volunteers and supported by Gloucester Rugby and Gloucestershire Archives. The book is the fourth in a series of five books, previous volumes having recorded the history of the Kingsholm ground, representative matches played there, and Gloucester Rugby in cup competitions.

Book excerpt: From the establishment of Gloucester as a Roman colonia, a colony of retired military veterans, the city has held a strategic position, being close to the easiest crossing over the River Severn and into Wales. The Romans began building the city's defences, including the city walls and bastions, which were further enhanced by the great warrior Aethelflaed and which would become invaluable in the Siege of Gloucester during the Civil War in 1643. These walls would be destroyed by Charles II as a punishment for the city's role in the conflict. In the twelfth century, Gloucester's first motte and bailey castle were built and used by a number of kings as a garrison to prepare attacks against the Welsh and the Irish. The formation of what would become known as 'The Glorious Glosters', in 1782, led to a number of notable military campaigns, including the battles of Alexandria, Quatre Bras, the Second Boer War, including the Siege of Ladysmith, both World Wars and the Korean War. Christine's book will take you on an historic journey, uncovering on the way the city's military legacy.

Book excerpt: Three hundred years ago, in 1721, the 'Dutch engraver' Johannes Kip (or John Kip, his anglicised name) dropped down dead in St John's Street, Westminster, bringing to a sudden end his career in England of more than thirty years as a renowned printmaker. Gloucestershire owes him a special commemoration in 2021 as the draughtsman and also engraver of sixty-four prints commissioned in the early eighteenth century by Sir Robert Atkyns for The Ancient and Present State of Glostershire. The majority of the prints contain an architectural-style drawing of a gentleman's 'Seat', but each is a treasure trove of other features in the surrounding scene. The short commentary which accompanies a large-sized reproduction of each print in this book has pointers to the details and to the history of the house and the family. Kip's work as the engraver of houses drawn or painted by a fellow Dutchman, Leendert Knyff (generally known as Leonard Knyff), is well-known; his unique collection of Gloucestershire prints is not. This book, based on the collaborative work of people with an interest in one or more prints, and the accumulated information of the Gloucestershire Gardens and Landscape Trust, reveals the significance of Kip's work. There are examples here of old houses and relatively new houses, large houses and relatively modest ones, the houses of aristocrats but more often of Gloucestershire gentry, of elaborate gardens and extensive estates, of splendid views reaching to the shipping on the rivers bounding the county on the west, or more limited ones of local hills. Two engravings of Gloucester are presented first, and then the sequence of parishes starts with Wick Court, appropriately the least altered of all the houses portrayed. Johannes Kip: The Gloucestershire Engravings is a contribution to the history of the county, to knowledge of the gardens, which in many cases still reflect Kip's engravings, to the unique history of many of the houses which survive three hundred years later, and to the riches of the Gloucestershire countryside.
