Book excerpt: Award-winning photographer Dorothy Monnelly captures the yet-unspoiled beauty of one of the last natural ecosystems in the Northeast. In this collection of 57 large format, black and white photographs, the salt marsh is a solemn force rendered dramatically with crisp scans of Monnelly's original gelatin silver prints. As a native of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Monnelly executes her work with a familiarity and grace evocative of Ansel Adams. Her work is described in the forward by Jeanne Adams, director of the Ansel Adams Trust as capturing the marsh's "amazing sculptural quality." "Between Land and Sea" is grounded with an essay by journalist Doug Stewart, a regular contributor to "Smithsonian" and other magazines. Stewart's words provide a rich context for the images, as well as a strong case for preserving the marshlands. "Standing in an upland clearing overlooking a vast prairie of marsh grass, you can easily believe that a salt marsh is the closest thing a landscape comes to eternity. Even the Grand Canyon is eroding, after all, but a healthy salt marsh is renewed with each rising tide." Monnelly's book is indispensable to those who are conscious of the threat to our planet's sustainability. 57 black and white illustrations.

Book excerpt: Wars have been fought over it, revolutions have been spurred by it, national diets have been based on it, economies have depended on it, and the settlement of North America was driven by it. Cod, it turns out, is the reason Europeans set sail across the Atlantic, and it is the only reason they could. What did the Vikings eat in icy Greenland and on the five expeditions to America recorded in the Icelandic sagas? Cod -- frozen and dried in the frosty air, then broken into pieces and eaten like hardtack. What was the staple of the medieval diet? Cod again, sold salted by the Basques, an enigmatic people with a mysterious, unlimited supply of cod. Cod is a charming tour of history with all its economic forces laid bare and a fish story embellished with great gastronomic detail. It is also a tragic tale of environmental failure, of depleted fishing stocks where once the cod's numbers were legendary. In this deceptively whimsical biography of a fish, Mark Kurlansky brings a thousand years of human civilization into captivating focus.

Book excerpt: In 1817, as Gloucester, Massachusetts, was recovering from the War of 1812, something beneath the water was about to cause a stir in this New England coastal community. It was a misty August day when two women first sighted Gloucester's sea serpent, touching off a riptide of excitement among residents that reached a climax when Matt Gaffney fired a direct shot at the creature. Local historian Wayne Soini explores the depths of Gloucester harbor to reveal a treasure-trove of details behind this legendary mystery. Follow as he tracks Justice of the Peace Lonson Nash's careful investigation, the world's first scientific study of this marine animal, and judges the credibility of numerous reported sightings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gloucester, Massachusetts was founded nearly 400 years ago, being one of the very first of the English settlements on the Eastern seaboard of the United States. Although initially it was a essentially a land based community, by the mid 18th century it had become one of the most important fishing communities in N. America, with a commanding position on George's Bank and the immensely rich fishing grounds of Newfoundland. However with this huge growth in maritime activities came an astonishingly high rate of fatalities amongst Gloucester-men working the boats in the fishing industry, and it is the history of the exploits of those that risked their lives in the pursuit of cod that inspired the author Kitty Parsons to pen the ballads in this volume. The ballads have an incredible vitality and involve story telling in a most immediate form. They also have a very definite sense of humor. The poems were first published in 1946 and then reissued in the current format in 1981. They have, however, been long out of print, and Galileo is very happy to bring them back with a new cover featuring a well known Winslow Homer Gloucester image - Homer himself being one of the town's most famous painters. This volume manages to distill the essence of a seafaring town that has acquired iconic status in the United States through its adoption by so many famous artists and writers over the last two centuries. Sadly, little is known of Kitty Parsons who was a Rockport resident, married to the sculptor Richard Recchia. But this book is the greatest monument to her talents

Book excerpt: It has been said that if Williamsburg is the physical re creation of Colonial Virginia, then Gloucester is its spirit. When the age of photography dawned, it captured glimpses of this character in pictures both merry and melancholy, of old homes and newcomers, of stubbornly provincial clans yet generous and hospitable people. Soon after landing at Jamestown, land-hungry 17th-century settlers discovered Gloucester's fertile soils and abundant waters. Within a century, wealthy families and a vibrant port brought fame to the young county--preferred by Colonials as it had been by the indigenous people of the principal Powhatan chiefdom they replaced. Gloucester's Colonial and antebellum prosperity declined, though, as the American Revolution and Civil War sapped resources and left society changed. Photographs from the next hundred years until the modern age reveal the genteel, proud, and rural spirit that prevailed.
