Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of being a stranger is present in every culture. In this context, “the Jewish question” is often discussed, since the Jews have been present in other nations for centuries, constituting the social and cultural minority and being almost always perceived as strangers. This volume presents a detailed analysis of Jewish self-perceptions and attitudes, often very complex, towards other societies and communities living in the same lands. The contributors to this book explore the lengthy discussions between both the supporters and adversaries of assimilation within the Jewish environment and also between the assimilated Jews and non-Jews, which often further complicate this issue. As the authors show here, the “methods of assimilation” of eastern European Jews were not straightforward, but were rather often rather complicated and rough. Many Jewish people were trying to find the best solution to their own, “Jewish question”, and adapt themselves reasonably to the gentile environment and to the changing realities of the world in which they had to exist, regardless of their will, or in which they freely chose to live having made autonomic and personal decisions. As such, this volume explores Jewish assimilation issues from a wide and multifaceted perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explores what it means to be modern and what it means to be Korean in a culture where courtship and marriage are often the crucible in which notions of gender and class are cast and recast. Touching on a number of important issues—identity, romantic love, women’s work, marriage negotiations, and wedding ceremonies—Laurel Kendall gives us a new appreciation for how Koreans have adapted this pivotal social practice to the astounding changes of the past century. Kendall attended her first Korean wedding in 1970, soon after she arrived in the country with the Peace Corps. Years later, as a seasoned anthropologist, she began interviewing both working-class and middle-class couples, matchmakers, purveyors of dowry goods, and proprietors of wedding halls. She consulted etiquette handbooks and women’s magazines and analyzed cartoons, photographs, and weddings themselves. The result is an engaging account of how marriage matches are made, how families proceed through the rites, how they finance ceremonies and elaborate exchanges of ritual goods, and how these practices are integral to the construction of adult identities and notions of ideal women and men. The book is also a reflection on what it means to write “Korea” in a complex and ever changing social milieu.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communism in Eastern Europe is in crisis. Its dimensions are social and economic; its manifestation is political. This volume, a collection of essays by leading authorities, describes the symptoms of the crisis, diagnoses the causes of the malady, and offers alternative scenarios for therapy. A unique dimension of this collection is its avoidance of one-dimensional explanations. The contributors approach the subject from very different angles, and start from very distinct sociopolitical premises. The volume includes original accounts of unexplored aspects of East European communism as well as classic interpretations of the economic crisis and social stagnation that characterize the area. Contributions not only examine the sociopolitical behavior of the ruling apparatus, but also analyze its strategies, political culture, and the opposition. Both the professional and the general reader seeking more information about Eastern Europe will find this volume an extensive, in-depth portrait of the current situation in what many observers predict may develop into the major area of tension in post-World War II Europe.

Book excerpt: How long have psychotherapists been depicted in films? Nearly as long as there have been films -- or psychotherapists, for that matter. This isn't surprising if one considers that the Freudian revolution in psychology and the invention of motion pictures occurred at about the same time. What may be surprising is the sheer number of times that psychotherapists, in their many guises, have shown up in the movies and how their depiction has reflected changing social attitudes about psychotherapy over the last century. This comprehensive worldwide filmography examines over 5000 movies. Films in which mental health professionals appear, or in which others act in that capacity, are listed alphabetically. A preface explains the criteria for a film's inclusion, and a lengthy introduction and guide to the filmography explores the changing social attitudes mirrored by the movies. Appendices list the titles by decade; alternate titles for many films; recent releases; and qualifying adult films. This text refers to Volume 2 of a two-volume set. Volume 2 includes entries from "M" through "Z," the appendices, and index. The complete set can be obtained under ISBN 0-7864-1297-6.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interwar Poland was home to more Jews than any other country in Europe. Its commonplace but simplistic identification with antisemitism was due largely to nationalist efforts to boycott Jewish business. That they failed was not for want of support by the Catholic clergy, for whom the ''Jewish question'' was more than economic. The myth of a Masonic-Jewish alliance to subvert Christian culture first flourished in France but held considerable sway over Catholics in 1930s Poland as elsewhere. This book examines how, following Vatican policy, Polish church leaders resisted separation of church and state in the name of Catholic culture. In that struggle, every assimilated Jew served as both a symbol and a potential agent of security. Antisemitism is no longer regarded as a legitimate political stance. But in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, the issues of religious culture, national identity, and minorities are with us still. This study of interwar Poland will shed light on dilemmas that still effect us today.

Book excerpt: In this unique filmography, Leslie Rabkin delves deeply into film's "unconscious," producing a valuable reference text concerned with the history of film and its representation of therapy and mental illness. The Celluloid Couch is arranged by decade, with the exception of the earliest period, The Silent Era (from the very beginnings of film to 1920). Each period contains a thoughtful introduction that highlights important films and discusses the intersection of film with history and psychology. Rabkin's overview lays bare patterns in film's representation of mental illness and therapy, and inquires how contemporary stereotypes of psychiatric patients and institutions have been formed from film. Textual examples in the introduction are drawn from magazines and newspapers, as well as numerous readings of particularly important films refracted through the lens of a psychologist. The alphabetical entries are compact and inclusive, containing main titles as well as foreign listings, and detailed information such as cast, length, director, producer, and a brief synopsis of the film's plot and discussion of the forms of therapy depicted and utilized in the film. An efficient resource for the student of film, psychology, or mass culture, The Celluloid Couch makes the huge number of popular films that portray mental illness and therapy accessible.
