Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago, a Puerto Rican child of migrant farm workers, defied family, tradition, and expectations to reach the highest ranks of academia and overcome monumental obstacles to create LEAP Academy, one of the nations best charter schools. In The Miracle on Cooper Street, Bonilla-Santiago shares the challenges and obstacles, potential resources, and support of fellow professionals that moved LEAP Academy from a small charter school in 1997 to its top position today. She describes and analyzes the establishment and accomplishments of LEAP Academy in one of Americas poorest and most violent cities, Camden, New Jersey. Bonilla-Santiago also shares the story of her personal and professional struggles as a Latina from an impoverished and working-class background, surviving and fighting for respect in an academic world that many times did not value racial or ethnic diversity. Those experiences forged a dream of transforming a poor urban community through education. The Miracle on Cooper Street narrates an inspiring account that shows how one determined individual can make a profound difference in the lives of at-risk children and their communities. It presents a working model for charter schools, while at the same time admitting that LEAP is a work in progress. Most of all, it describes an inspiring institution that has seen many young people break the cycle of poverty, graduate from high school, succeed in college, and go on to live productive lives.

Book excerpt: The joy of her pregnancy was shattered by the discovery of her baby's developmental problem. "Why don't you want an abortion? " doctor asked. "Because it's a life! " she answered. "My Child, rely on me; I will take care of you! " God called. She followed. She wrote, "When I came to God asking for His wisdom to understand the whole situation, it was as if a light lit up inside me. God fills each life with beautiful meaning. God doesn't favor those who are strong or smart. He loves us just as we are, unconditionally! I made up my mind to love my baby unconditionally and to carry her with a grateful heart, because I was walking with a beautiful life. " She did, and God was with her. It wasn't an easy journey. She shed tears and dealt with anguish and heartache. And yet she had peace, enjoyed sweet times with her husband and her unborn baby, and even experienced miracles. By the mercy of God, she and her husband had chance to hold their baby, Gloria. Their time with Gloria was filled with tender love, and they sent their baby off with songs and prayers. Life after Gloria's death was even harder, but God healed her broken heart miraculously, in a way of love, faith, and hope. This collection of tender, loving letters that Song Yang wrote to her late daughter, Gloria, turned out to be a love story of Gloria's short life and a praising song of God's incomprehensible love. May you find love, comfort, and hope in this book.

Book excerpt: Christmas Eve in New York! Broadway crowded with happy playgoers, gay promenaders, and belated shoppers! Fifth Avenue resplendent with an abundance of commercially-conceived festivity in the overstocked windows of its fashionable shops! In other and less pretentious localities, gaunt lines of assassinated turkeys exhibiting their sallow nudities in indecent profusion to a steady stream of ever-changing faces! In short, everywhere throughout the big city, the people holding high carnival—even cynicism forgetting itself in the prospect of gallinaceous food and crude sweetmeats. And Central Park West and the Circle, in particular, scintillating with electrical display and wreaths of red-ribboned holly. In the New Theatre a gala performance of Antony and Cleopatra was nearly over; the last lines of the tragedy were being spoken. Yet, notwithstanding the fact that in another moment the folds of the red velvet curtains would descend on the Egyptian scene, an occupant of one of the stalls, no longer able to control his impatience, hastily left his seat and started up the adjoining aisle. To say that this young man gave every physiognomical indication of being a soul in distress would be putting it not a bit too strongly. Nor would it have required exceptionally brilliant intuitive faculties to conjecture that someone—presumably in a box across the theatre, on which, all through the evening, his eyes had been riveted—had shamelessly robbed him of his heart. Moreover, judging from his evident haste and the keen anxiety with which all the way up the aisle he followed every movement of the parties in the box, it would seem that he had determined to intercept them on their way out. And, indeed, such was his determination. Life had concentrated itself into a question of hearing from the lips of the woman,—the woman to whom he had offered, and who had refused, the worship of a life,—a word that he could interpret as meaning that there was still a faint possibility of her changing her mind. To his vexation, however, he found that others likewise had left their seats. In fact, the general exodus had already set in before, even, he had reached the top of the aisle. And yet, despite his being thoroughly aware that any attempt to pass from one side of the house to the other was sure to be resented,—so delirious is the haste in which a metropolitan audience takes leave of the theatre for the invariable restaurant-supper after the play,—he continued to make strenuous efforts to cut his way through, until realising, finally, that it was useless, he let himself be borne along by the crowd. But his chance came when the carriage-vestibule on Sixty-Fifth Street was reached. And there, quick to take advantage of an almost imperceptible cessation of the onward movement—consequent upon the people searching the ingeniously-devised board to ascertain whether the desired motors or carriages headed the long line—he again started in to elbow his way through the crush; and so successfully this time that presently comparatively few persons separated him from an undeniably blond and dashing young woman, in a magnificent opera-cloak of Russian sables, who was laughing and chatting with half a dozen or more vapid youths while following the lead of a portly and somewhat red-faced old gentleman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true-life story of a country boy, Reginald Stone, who started his life in a small town in Virginia. After moving to Washington, D.C. with his family, he attended a Billy Graham Crusade with a neighbor where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. Reginald has always said, “he was never the same again.” After attending Bible College, Reginald pastored a small church for little pay. It was during this time that God led him to meet his wife, Rose, at a nearby camp meeting. In the beginning of their marriage, he worked both educational and ministerial jobs. It was at his first full-time pastoral position that God began to call both Reginal and Rose to Latin America. When they left the church and headed to Mexico to attend a Spanish school to learn the Spanish language, neither of them realized all that God had in store for them. Just learning the Spanish language took faith for Reginald. The adventures had only begun in Mexico. Uruguay and Peru had so much more in store for them with building new churches, many miracles of God, and even being hunted by terrorists. Every day required trusting God. After leaving South America, the ministry of this couple was not over. God had more churches to be pastored, organizations to be led, and ministry schools to be created and taught at. The Hispanics of United States of America was their new mission field. This book concludes with eleven lessons that Reginald learned while on the mission field. These lessons teach ministers and missionaries valuable lessons to know before entering the mission field which are both practical and thought-provoking. Laugh and shed tears as you walk through the life of Reginald and Rose as they follow God's plan for their lives.
