In the past, DoCoMo acquired a minority stake in several wireless telecom operators in developed countries for the purpose of expanding its W-CDMA and i-mode platforms (developed by DoCoMo) but not for pursuing returns on its investment. In contrast, Vodafone, DoCoMo's chief rival telecom operator, acquired a majority stake in several wireless telecom operators in order to expand the scope and scale of its business and to pursue synergy effects. DoCoMo's present basic strategy can be defined as a technology-driven policy, while Vodafone's basic strategy focuses on financial matters as a finance-driven policy. In this thesis, I analyze the global strategies of these two wireless telecom operators, comparing their respective technology-driven policy and finance-driven policy. I present a philosophy and methodology for a global investment strategy that will creates future sustainable growth for DoCoMo. Finally, I examine specific investment candidates who could bolster the implementation of the new strategy.

Book excerpt: The revolution of wireless communications has only just begun to transform the telecommunications industry worldwide. This book offers insight into the possible options for corporate strategists and government policymakers as they look to harness the expansion of wireless communications to meet the goals of sustainable telecommunications development. Using a multidisciplinary approach which combines policy research, legal analysis, business economics, and models of sustainability from the environmental sciences, the book compares the development of wireless communications in four countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Brazil. The comparative analysis points to common themes and opportunities, including: * breaking down the barriers between wireless and wireline access by changing the regulatory design which constrains service providers; * targeting the development potential of wireless access through the utilization of new technologies and service models; and * using wireless access as the basis for full facilities-based competition in both developing and developed world markets. No other book today offers this broad a context for a discussion of wireless communications and its potential impact on the evolution of the telecommunications industry.

Book excerpt: A little more than 3 billion people have access to basic mobile telephony, with 48% living close to or below the poverty line. These people, the so-called ‘mass market’, lack access to basic communications technology. An ongoing issue facing communications providers is how to facilitate and promote communications access to those who live in rural areas of developing economies. The authors utilize their considerable ‘hands on’ experience of working in successful telecommunications companies in order to address the challenges of creating, facilitating and maintaining sustainable telecommunications growth in developing nations. With this focus in mind the authors present a snapshot of these countries through real life case studies. Sustainable Telecoms Growth in Developing Economies: Presents innovative and sustainable business models to address telecommunications adoption in developing countries. Identifies the inherent drivers and barriers in the mass-market adoption of mobile services in developing economies. Discusses the impact and importance of telecoms in developing nations including customer needs and Internet-based services. Highlights the current state of communications in such markets. Includes real-world case studies and interviews with telecoms CEOs from all over the world. The author team provides decision makers, professionals, and application developers in IT, telecommunications and media with a thorough understanding of the current state and future evolution of sustainable telecommunications in developing countries. In order to do so, it is important to explore innovative and cost-efficient technologies and business models. Telecom Energy Services Company (TESCOs) offer solutions for powering and managing telecom companies' networks in off-grid and bad-grid areas in chapter one. International Finance Corporation (IFC) is seeking to contribute to the growth and development of innovative solution providers for telecom sites located in areas with little to no access to electricity by providing insights into the growth perspectives of the TESCO market globally in chapters two and three. IFC presents a market segmentation framework based on current business models in chapter four. The report then examines the typical commercial arrangements and key drivers which influence the bankability of TESCOs in chapter five. IFC also estimates the total amount of financing needed in order to address the pressing need for connectivity in unserved and underserved areas and acts as a call to action to stakeholders in the industry and in the financing community to work towards bridging this important connectivity gap. The five sections covered in this report represent the key dimensions required to assess the investment opportunity for TESCOs.

Book excerpt: In 1997, members of the World Trade Organization embraced an agreement to liberalize basic international telecommunications services within a competitive trade framework. Shortly after the WTO agreement entered into force, the Aspen Institute convened the third annual Aspen Institute Roundtable on International Telecommunications (AIRIT). The main objective of the meeting was to identify appropriate institutions and forums to implement the new framework and to smooth the transition from the old monopoly order to a truly competitive environment. Three main themes were discussed: the implementation of the WTO agreement on telecommunications, the restructuring of global traffic, and the governance of global electronic commerce. This report details the conclusions and recommendations of the international telecommunications, trade, and policy leaders who participated in the AIRIT roundtable discussions.Contributors include Donald Abelson (Office of the U.S. Trade Representative), Jeremy Beale (OECD), Carlos Braga (World Bank), Ron Cross (Nortel Networks), James E. Graf II (British Telecommunications North America), Larry Lafaro (AT& T), Stephen Liddell (WorldCom International, Hong Kong), Neil McMillan (Department of Trade and Industry, UK), Michael Niebel (European Commission, Belgium), Jean-Paul Simon (France Telecom), Hiroyuki Tanaka (Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, Japan), Lee Tuthill (World Trade Organization, Switzerland).

However, if we want to improve the quality of life of the world population with the help of access to information and education, it is necessary that in the next decade an additional five billion people gain access to the Internet. The next five billion Internet users are mainly living in emerging economies. Therefore, the main challenge is to lower the economic barrier using new approaches for infrastructure deployment and service delivery to billions of people. This book reflects the discussions of the challenges from the Münchner Kreis with representatives from the ICT industry, academia, non-governmental organizations and governmental development organizations, among them many representatives from emerging economies in Africa and Asia. They had highlighted the real demand for ICT, and what impact ICT creates for the wealth and lifestyle of the people.

Book excerpt: It is tempting to think that, in the year 2001, our technology is very sophisticated and accordingly, it is very tempting to believe that present-day computer technology is "very advanced" (begging the question of to what?). The fact is that we have only just begun to develop computer technology, and the recent implementation of the Internet brings us to a special threshold in that development. Development stages require very careful and thoughtful management. What we do now in this present development stage will be profoundly important for future generations. The management of the foundation for the 'evolution' of computer technology is a very special case because it will also become intimately connected with the management of mankind itself, not only in groups or collectively but also, eventually, as a species.
