Our policy makers in the country have been proven wrong based on their argument that the country was insulated. Some of the sectors that have felt the heat of the crisis are the banking sector and the stock market. In the stock market, investors lost trillions of naira due the downward fall in the prices of stock. Based on this, the study assesses the extent of the stock market volatility in the period preceding the crisis and the period of the crisis. Using the All Share Index, the returns for various months were computed, descriptive statistics of the returns was calculated and the volatility of the market was estimated using the standard deviation. It was found that the stock market is highly volatile in the period of the financial crisis than the period preceding it. The recommendation is that the depth of instruments in the stock market should be varied in terms of fixed securities than equity instruments.Proceedings of the National Conference on “Managing the challenges of Global Financial Crisis in Developing Economies” organised by Faculty of Administration, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Nigeria.

The risk of global recession has heightened significantly and volatility of commodity prices, which is the mainstay of most developing countries like Nigeria, has increased further. If this situation continues to deteriorate, developing countries could be in great jeopardy. This study examined the influence of the Global Financial Crisis on Nigerian economy. It was discovered that the financial crisis will cause fall in commodity prices, decline in export, lower portfolio and FDI inflow, fall in equity market, decline in remittance from abroad etc. It was recommended that the federal government should come up with intervention policies that will minimize these effects and jump start the economy and that business operator should learn to do things using resources at their disposal to develop and expand at manageable level to stem the tide of the crisis.

The current global financial crisis is triggered by events in the United States, and rapidly engulfing the entire globe. Nigerian financial market being one of the emerging global markets have over the last four years witnessed some significant level of progress and stability in the form of recapitalization and consolidation of its financial institutions. These reforms though commendable, yet could not shield the banks and the entire economy from the global financial crisis. This study identifies the trends and implications of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian economy.Methodology/Technique - Descriptive analysis through secondary sources of data employed. A stratified sampling method adopted to select between the two strata that are the strongest and the weakest in terms of capital based. Four organizations were chosen from each stratum making eight banks and the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) as the sample size of the study.Findings - This study identifies the trends and implications of the global financial crisis on the Nigerian economy. It was observed that Nigerian banks are open to global practices and business relationships with foreign banks that are badly affected by the crisis. While investors lose confidence in the Nigerian markets as stocks and oil fall drastically almost daily. This has almost resulted in drastic cut in the foreign capital inflow for the country.Novelty - Based on the above findings the study recommends that Nigerian government should diversify the economy by improving the state of infrastructure, intensify the war against corruption, propose bailout measures for privatized companies and ensure fair and sincere democracy.Type of Paper: Conceptual.

Book excerpt: The Global Financial Meltdown was initially seen as western issue with a global name especially in Nigeria, Africa and other developing countries. The ranking of Nigeria as one of the ten least vulnerable economies further boosted the confidence of investors in its capital market. Subsequent events proved many financial analysts wrong as market indices in the Nigerian capital market deteriorated persistently for several months in what appears to be the most catastrophic experience since its inception. To say the least, the effect of the crisis on the Nigeria Capital Market was colossal; There was massive withdrawals of Foreign Portfolio investment with local investors following suit. The study shows that there is a two way causality, between the Capital market of the United States and the Nigeria Capital Market, with a higher causality from the U.S financial market to the Nigerian Capital Market than vice versa. This further showed the vulnerability of the Nigerian stock Exchange to external shocks and distortions; thus the effect of the global crisis on the Nigerian Capital Market was devastating.

Book excerpt: The fundamental role of stock market is to provide adequate guarantee to share holders for the existence of market for their second hand securities. Adequate knowledge about the volatility, performance and efficiency of stock returns remains vital and essential information to investors. These will guide not only investment decisions but also planning for economic growth and development. Given that the Nigerian Stock Exchange has existed, its ability to generate confidence is still in doubt given the recent crash witnessed in the market. It means the confidence the exchange is expected to in still in investors is still not commensurable. It was against the forgoing that this study examined the impact on stock market returns of liquidity and volatility in the Nigerian Stock market. The study adopted the ex-post facto research design and data were obtained from monthly reports of the Nigerian Stock Exchange from January, 2009 to December, 2015. The study used the Ordinary least square and ARCH/GARCH to test the hypotheses stated. The result from the hypotheses tested revealed that stock market returns measured by all shares index was positively and significantly impacted by liquidity measured by market capitalization value ratio and turnover ratio of the Nigerian Stock Exchange but was negatively and significantly impacted by volume of transaction ratio. The results also revealed that, there is a significant ARCH/GARCH (volatility) effect on stock market returns of the Nigerian Stock market. The study thus concludes that the Nigerian Stock Exchange should act to in still more confidence on investors. Thus, the study recommends amongst others that strategies need to be designed toward reaping abnormal returns by exploiting information and actions that enhance inefficiency in stock markets thus, firms and individuals should be encouraged to buy or sell securities outside their face values, as a means of encouraging business or economic activities in the economy.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the impact of price limits and trading halts (circuit breakers) on the returns volatility of the Nigerian equity markets during the market meltdown occasioned by the Global Financial and Economic Crises of 2007-2010. Results indicate that the introduction of price limits and trading halts moderated the volatility in the market. More significantly, price volatility of equity returns reduced as the price limit symmetric band was increased from 5 percent to 10 percent indicating positive correlation between lower volatility and higher symmetric price limit bands. Furthermore, symmetric price limits proved more effective than asymmetric ones. The introduction of price limits orchestrated market information inefficiency which may have undermined liquidity conditions in the market. Results on Granger causality indicate unidirectional causal flow from equity returns volatility to traded volume suggesting that equity returns volatility may predict volume volatility and provide information on the thresholds of price limit bands to be introduced in the market during extreme price fluctuations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper examines the impact of foreign portfolio investment (FPI) on stock market performance in Nigeria using monthly data from year 2006 to 2015. Results from ARDL bound testing approach reveals that FPI have adverse effect on market performance. However, the role of FPI altered during the global financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 as it increased stock price index and reduced market volatility during this period. This suggests that foreign inflows were valued more during the crisis period. Findings also reveal that macroeconomic factors, which include exchange rate, money supply and interest rate, explain stock market index while exchange rate affects stock return volatility. The study offers useful policy implications for government in its liberalization policies and recommends that government should be more cautious in its liberalization policy. The interest of domestic investors should not be undermined while putting measures in place to encourage FPI of longer-term nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work studied the effect of global financial crisis on Nigeria economy in Nigeria. The financial crisis ravaging the global economy is naturally a serious cause for concern to policy makers. Secondary data were used in this study, the data were collected from CBN statistical bulletin also data were also gathered from journals and textbook that are related to the research topic. The overall significance of the regression is tested using Fisher's statistics. In this study the calculated F* value of 47.375 is significant at 5%. The result however show that linear relationship exist between the dependent and the independent variables of the model. The evidence established that the independent explanatory variables have individual and combine impact on the market capitalization in Nigeria. There is significant relationship between global financial crisis and capital market in Nigeria. Some of the recommendations made in this study are that. There is an urgent need for the total overhaul of regulations and regulatory framework, in order to enhance both the on-site and off-site examination and supervision of the banks. There is the need for increased and enhanced provisions for consumer protection. Nigerian economy is a mono-economy; any crash on the price of oil internationally will cripple our economy. So it is a matter of urgency for the Nigerian economy to divest into agriculture, manufacturing, information technology etc. Political stability is an important factor that encourages investment in an economy. So our nascent democracy should be nurtured.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examined the long run and short run interactions between stock prices and exchange rate in Nigeria based on a sample from 1st February, 2001 to 31st December, 2008. Three models were derived from the sample, albeit pre-crisis, crisis and basic models. The paper set out by testing the time series properties of the series using the ADF and PP tests. In addition, the Engle and Granger two-step and Johansen and Juselius cointegration procedures were applied. Empirical results showed that all the series are I(1) and evidence of cointegration was established using the Johansen and Juselius methodology. Furthermore, causality tests revealed strong evidence of long run bidirectional relationship between stock prices and exchange rate in the models. Policy wise, the findings implied that monetary authorities in Nigeria are not constrained to take into account stock market development in achieving their exchange rate policy objective given the symbiotic nature of relationship between the two. The paper recommends measures that would promote greater stability and efficiency of the Nigeria's foreign exchange market.
