Book Synopsis The Role of Fluids in Crustal Processes by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Role of Fluids in Crustal Processes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water and other fluids play a vital role in the processes that shape the earth's crust, possibly even influencing earthquakes and volcanism. Fluids affect the movement of chemicals and heat in the crust, and they are the major factor in the formation of hydrothermal ore deposits. Yet, fluids have been overlooked in many geologic investigations. The Role of Fluids in Crustal Processes addresses this lack of attention with a survey of what experts know about the role of fluids in the Earth's crustâ€"and what future research can reveal. The overview discusses factors that affect fluid movement and the coupled equations that represent energy and mass transport processes, chemical reactions, and the relation of fluids to stress distribution.

Download or read book Advances in Photosynthesis Research written by C. Sybesma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 911 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Congress on Photosynthesis took place from 1 to 6 August 1983, on the Campus of the "Vrije Universiteit Brussel", in Brussels, Belgium. These Proceedings contain most of the scientific contributions offered during the Congress. The Brussels Congress was the largest thus far held in the series of International Congresses on Photosynthesis. It counted over 1100 active participants. The organizers tried to minimize the disadvantages of such a large size by making maximum use of the facili ties available on a university campus. Most contributions were offered in the form of posters which were displayed in a substantial number of classrooms. The discussion sessions, twice a day, four or five in parallel, took place in lecture rooms in the very vicinity of these classrooms. In this way it was attempted to generate the atmosphere of a small meeting. The unity of the subject Photosynthesis was preserved in the ten plenary lectures, organ~sed in such a way that a general overview of two diverse topics was given every day. In addition, there were the five times four parallel symposia dealing with some six teen general topics. Every editor of proceedings of a congress is faced with the problem of editing and arranging the contributions, a problem compounded by the wide diversity and the large number of the 753 manuscripts.

Book Synopsis Gas Migration by : Leonid F. Khilyuk Ph.D.
Download or read book Gas Migration written by Leonid F. Khilyuk Ph.D. and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-07-14 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This breakthrough new book may help save countless lives and avoid enormous losses. It presents a methodology for using gas migration to predict earthquakes and explosive gas buildup. Using rigorous scientific investigation and documented worldwide case histories, this remarkable book presents compelling evidence showing that changes in gas rates, composition, and migration accompany the tectronic events preceding earthquakes and their associated seismic events, such as volcanoes and tsunamis. Because these gas parameters are detectable and measurable, they provide an early warning of seismic activity.Gas Migration is the first book to accumulate, analyze and apply the interdisciplinary knowledge on gas migration and detail its connection to tectronic, seismic, and geologic phenomena. It combines geological, geochemical, geophysical, seismological, and petroleum engineering insights to demonstrate how gas migration and its associated phenomena can be used in earthquake and environmental geohazard identification and prediction. Topics include-· Tectonics and Earthquakes· Gas Migration at Plate Boundaries· Surface Soil-Gas Surveys· Faults and Petroleum Reservoirs· Earthquake Precursors· Whispering Gases· Paths and Mechanics of Gas Migration· Subsidence, Gas Migration, and Seismic Activity· And much moreWith this information, environmental specialists, civil engineers, petroleum geologists, seismologists, and urban planners now have a new and powerful conceptual basis and tool for understanding and perhaps even predicting gas explosions and earthquakes.
Book Synopsis Stable Isotope Geochemistry by : Jochen Hoefs
Download or read book Stable Isotope Geochemistry written by Jochen Hoefs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stable Isotope Geochemistry is an introduction to the use of stable isotopes in the geosciences. The three parts treat theoretical and experimental principles; fractionation mechanisms of light and heavy elements; and the natural variations of geologically important reservoirs. The fifth edition has been revised and extended and now includes a new chapter on palaeoclimatology. Special emphasis has been given to the growing field of "heavy" elements, while many new references have been added. For students and scientists alike, the book will be a primary source of information with regard to how and where stable isotopes can be used to solve geological problems.
