Book excerpt: Advocacy and investment on behalf of children affected by AIDS have had an impact, and the goal of eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV appears within reach. But for every problem solved or advance made, new challenges and constraints have arisen. This Children and AIDS: Sixth Stocktaking Report examines current data, trends and the progress that's been made - pointing out disparities in access, coverage and outcomes - and calls for concrete actions to benefit the millions of children, women and families worldwide who bear the burden of the epidemic.

Book excerpt: Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death globally, particularly among children and young adults. The spread of new pathogens and the threat of antimicrobial resistance pose particular challenges in combating these diseases. Major Infectious Diseases identifies feasible, cost-effective packages of interventions and strategies across delivery platforms to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, malaria, adult febrile illness, viral hepatitis, and neglected tropical diseases. The volume emphasizes the need to effectively address emerging antimicrobial resistance, strengthen health systems, and increase access to care. The attainable goals are to reduce incidence, develop innovative approaches, and optimize existing tools in resource-constrained settings.

Book excerpt: The report titled The Urgency of Now: AIDS at a Crossroads, demonstrates the HIV response is at a crossroads: success or failure will be determined by which path leaders take. The report shows that the decisions leaders make this year will determine whether AIDS is ended as a public health threat by 2030. Taking the wrong path, by limiting resourcing or clamping down on human rights, would lead the pandemic to continue to grow, costing millions more lives and undermining global health security.

Although important progress has been made in expanding access to HIV prevention, treatment and support, such services currently reach only a fraction of those in need. Turning the tide against the epidemic will require significantly stronger and sustained national efforts. To achieve this, a number of key challenges were identified: implementation; co-ordination; capacity; leadership; financing; social barriers and a renewed commitment to the principle of active involvement of people living with HIV & civil society as key pillars in all levels of the response

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investing in Communities Achieves Results fills an important gap in the global knowledge on community level results and resources related to HIV and AIDS. While communities, in spite of their limited resources, have played a key role in the HIV/AIDS response, their contributions and innovative approaches to prevention, treatment, care, and support have not always been the focus of systematic and rigorous evaluations. To address this deficit, a series of studies-including evaluations in Burkina Faso, India, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Zimbabwe-were undertaken over a three-year period (early 2009 to early 2012), helping to build a robust pool of evidence on the effects of community-based activities and programs. A unique feature of this multicountry evaluation was the collaboration between two international organizations (the World Bank and the United Kingdom's Department for International Development) and a major civil society network (the U.K. Consortium on AIDS and International Development). Other attributes that contributed to the successful outcome were the sustained consultation process with civil society and stakeholders at the local, national, and global levels, and the collaboration among high-caliber, multi-disciplinary researcher teams. The book's findings are promising. At varying levels, depending on the country context, the HIV response in communities was shown to improve knowledge and behavior and increase the use of health services- and even decrease HIV incidence. Evidence on social transformation was more mixed, with community groups found to be effective only in some settings. Each study in the evaluation provides a partial view of how communities shape the local response; however, taken together they constitute a significant pool of rigorous evidence on the contributions of communities, community groups, and civil society to the national and global HIV and AIDS response. The studies suggest that communities have produced significant results at the local level, which contribute to outcomes at the national level.

Book excerpt: While much progress has been made on achieving the Millenium Development Goals over the last decade, the number and complexity of global health challenges has persisted. Growing forces for globalization have increased the interconnectedness of the world and our interdependency on other countries, economies, and cultures. Monumental growth in international travel and trade have brought improved access to goods and services for many, but also carry ongoing and ever-present threats of zoonotic spillover and infectious disease outbreaks that threaten all. Global Health and the Future Role of the United States identifies global health priorities in light of current and emerging world threats. This report assesses the current global health landscape and how challenges, actions, and players have evolved over the last decade across a wide range of issues, and provides recommendations on how to increase responsiveness, coordination, and efficiency â€" both within the U.S. government and across the global health field.

Book excerpt: The volume describes the worldwide state of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and possible ways forward. Marking the 30 years of AIDS, the report takes stock of the changes occurred in the AIDS epidemic and responses since the condition was first diagnosed in 1981. It also features commentaries from 15 leaders in the global AIDS response, including South Africa's President Jacob Zuma, former United States President Bill Clinton, former President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, singer Angelique Kidjo and former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. It covers a wide range of areas, including the results achieved by HIV prevention efforts, the record number of people starting lifesaving treatment and the decline in resources for HIV. It also draws attention to the significant challenges remaining such as the gender inequalities and the increasing HIV prevalence among key populations at higher risk of infection.
