Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expanded and thoroughly updated English edition of the Italian edition (2008), Massimo Faggioli offers us a history and broader context of the so-called ecclesial movements of which Focolare, Community of Sant'Egidio, Neocatechumenal Way, Legionaries of Christ, Communion and Liberation, and Opus Dei are only some of the most recognizable names. Their history goes back to the period following the First Vatican Council, crosses Vatican II, and develops throughout the twentieth century. It is a history that prepares the movements' rise in the last three decades, from John Paul II to Francis. These movements are a complex phenomenon that shapes the Church now more than before, and they play a key role for the future of Catholicism as a global community, in transition from a Eurocentric tradition to a world Church.

Book excerpt: The term privilege has been used for a multiplicity of previsions including particular laws, indulgences, indults or dispensations to do what the general law forbids or to omit what is requires. The goal of the dissertation is to ascertain how changes to the 1983 code have served to clarify a notion which has been the object of debate for centuries. This provides the opportunity for comment upon individual canons which do not harmonize with the new definition or with other developments occasioned by the law's reform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authentic interpretation has followed a fascinating development. Its roots reach deep into Roman law and its complexity has fueled long debates in the Middle Ages. Shaped in its full form by Francisco Suarez, it has incorporated a new vision of human throught proposed by the great moral theologians of the post-tridentine period. Moreover it has been a fine example of the quality of Pian-Benedectine codification and of its reform conducted after the Second Vatican Council.

Book excerpt: The parameters for the relationship between the ordained and the non-ordained in the Church's mission, particularly in the realm of public functioning and the power of jurisdiction, are set frequently by reference to a limiting interpretation of the formula of Lumen Gentium 10b, regarding the relationship of the common and ministerial priesthood. This study illustrates how the same formula emphasises the dynamic of mutual orientation that determines this relationship. This dynamic is illustrated by an exploration of theme of the common priesthood in scripture, theology and the magisterium. Two other themes are significant for a proper understanding of the mutual orientation in question: the origin and nature of the power of governance, and the personal or institutional nature of the power exercised in ecclesiastical office. Given the importance of ecclesiastical office as a juridical institution for the Church's public functioning, the theological-juridical category munus emerges as both unifying and orienting for the relationship between the ordained and non-ordained in the exercise of office. The study sustains that ecclesiastical offices have a primordial content based on the nature of one's sacramental participation in the priesthood of Christ, and the consequent participation in his threefold munera. This is significant for appointment to ecclesiastical office, its proper exercise, and the authoritative nature of public functioning.

Book excerpt: Using an analytical methodology, this work explores integral reordering in the traditio canonica as well as its contemporary understanding. It also presents a hierarchical model for evaluating juridic documents and the norms within them. Based on the research presented in the initial chapter, the second section formulates rules that serve as indicators in determining if a specific juridic document, institute, or norm has been integrally reordered and thereby revoked. The final chapter applies the rules of integral reordering to a specific example of ecclesiastical law, namely, the law that binds members of religious institutes. This section includes a survey of juridic documents of the universal church that have impacted upon religious law since the time of the Second Vatican Council. The work offers a comprehensive working definition of integral reordering, and concludes with relevant and related canonical questions which take the reader beyond the scope of the study.
