Book excerpt: The European Glaucoma Society was founded in the spring of 1978 at the initiative of Drs Fran~ois, Leydhecker and Greve. Representatives of most European countries met in Ghent and agreed to create a society that would promote the contacts and exchange of knowledge between European glauco matologists. The European Glaucoma Society serves to stimulate glaucoma research and diffuse specific knowledge to general ophthalmologists. The European Glaucoma Society would like to cooperate closely with similar glaucoma organizations in other continents. The first symposium of the EGS was held in April 1980 in Brighton, England. No proceedings were published. The second symposium took place in May 1984 in Hyvinkiiii, Finland. A great number of participants enjoyed a well organized scientific programme of attractive quality. The local organization was in the able hands of Raitta and her colleagues, Raivio and Lehto. The scientific programme was coordinated in Amsterdam where a great amount of work was done by Stella Ompi, secretary to the general secretary. The contents of the meeting have been summarized in this book. This second symposium of the EGS, which took place in an atmosphere of great enthusiasm and friendship, has shown great promise for the future of the European glaucoma.

Book excerpt: The second Committee Meeting of the Glaucoma Society of the International Congress of Ophthalmology was held in Carmel Valley ICalifornia from October 22-27, 1982. Traditionally this meeting was closed and preceded the International Congress of Ophthalmology in San Francisco. A group of roughly 80 experts on glaucoma - active members of the committee and invited guests - exchanged latest scientific experiences on the progress in pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of the glaucomas. The aim ofthe meeting was to provide quite informal presentations grouped around main topics and ample, lively discussions. The scientific and local organization was in the hands of Jack Hetherington Jr.lSan Francisco and Stephen M. Drance/Vancouver. It is the sincere wish of the society to express warmest thanks to Valerie Hetherington who took in a most charming and efficient way much of the burden of the local organization. The idea of pre-circulation of all scientific presentations 2-3 months before the meeting to all participants and guests proved to be effective with respect to fruitful and stimulating discussions at the site of the meeting. We thank all participants for their co-operation in sending their manuscripts in time. The society is indebted to Chibret Int. Pharmaceutical Company for generous support of this publication.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh International Visual Field Symposium organized by the Interna tional Perimetric Society was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, September 6-10,1986. In many respects it was an exciting and fruitful meeting. The number of participants was greater than ever. The number of papers was too great to accommodate all of them. The quality of the papers reflects the continuously rising interest in perimetry in general and in automated perimetry in particular. Last but not least the social programme was organized in the, by now, almost classical friendly, enjoyable and humouristic style of the International Perimetric Society. This created an atmosphere of openness and free exchange of informa tion whICh was clearly also felt in the scientific sessions. The scientific part was divided in seven sessions with 44 spoken papers and a separate postersession during which the 46 posters were discussed. The major themes of the meeting were 'The influence of media-disturbances on the visual field' and 'Advances in perimetry in glaucoma with special emphasis on pro gression'. The session on 'media' provided interesting information on how the visual field was effected by preretinal filters. The authors either studied the influence of lens or corneal opacities or simulated opacities by special filters placed in front of the eye. In two papers the effect of cataract was qualified by photography or stray light measurements.

Download or read book Glaucoma Surgery (2nd Edition) written by Maurice H Luntz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-07-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is essentially a text on the surgical management of glaucoma. It is the only book presently available that comprehensively covers all aspects of surgical management—namely, an appropriate decision-making process for introducing surgery into the management of glaucoma, a choice of the most suitable surgical procedure in individual cases of glaucoma, the preoperative preparation, anesthesia, surgical technique and postoperative care. The most effective and widely used operations are described in step-by-step detail, with excellent photographs and line drawings to illustrate the descriptions. This includes descriptions of trabeculectomy, subscleral Scheie, setons, laser glaucoma procedures, including holmium laser sclerostomy and YAG laser cyclophotodestruction. The reader is not only guided into and through the surgical procedure, but is also carefully guided into the choice of appropriate surgical procedures for the glaucoma problem for which the surgery is being used to ameliorate. The text also describes in detail the indications and techniques for the use of antimetabolites for bleb enhancement, and the management of surgical complications.

Recent advances in molecular biology and genetic engineering have fosteredbasic knowledge regarding the growth factors and intercellular messengers and their association with theproliferationofnew blood vessels. These latter findings sparked a renewed interest in Michaelson's "X-factor" ofocular neovascularization and opened avenues for possible innovative therapeutic approaches. Therefore, the suggestion to organize an international gathering of clinicians and scientists interested in problems of ocular circulation and neovascularization was received with great enthusiasm. Unanimously, it wasdecidedtodedicatethe symposium to Professor I.C. Michaelson, theinnovativescientist, the greatclinician, theindefatigableteacher, andaboveall, thewonderfulhumanbeing. Book Synopsis The History of Glaucoma by : C.T. Leffler
Download or read book The History of Glaucoma written by C.T. Leffler and published by Wayenborgh Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Glaucoma, the latest in the Hirschberg series of the history of ophthalmology, covers the twists, turns, and paradigm-shifts in the glaucoma concept over the past two millennia. Previously, scholars were not able to agree on how the term glaucoma, which related in antiquity to the color of a diseased eye, ended up describing an excavated optic neuropathy which has nothing to do with color. The volume begins in the ancient world, and proceeds all the way to the modern era of optical coherence tomography, minimally invasive surgery, and anti-VEGF agents. Ophthalmic historians and glaucoma specialists from the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America have contributed their scholarship and recollections to this volume, which includes photographs from private collections, information from unpublished documents, and new translations from Latin, Arabic, French, German, and Spanish. The work of masters such as Julius Hirschberg and Max Meyerhof is supplemented by the latest scholarship, which has benefited from the explosion in digitally-accessible historical documents. This new scholarship has upended many deeply rooted beliefs about ophthalmology history. Most important, the volume relates the personal stories of eye surgeons and patients, to bring the past to life. The History of Glaucoma is a must-have for anyone interested in medical history.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the papers presented at the Workshop on "Rehabilitation of the Visually Impaired" held in Flo rence at the Institute for the Research on Electromagnetic Waves of the Italian Research Council on April 4-6, 1984. The Workshop, sponsored by the Committee for Medical and Public Health Research of the Commission of the European Communities, was meant to exchange ideas about the need, importance and feasibility of a European cooperation in the field of visual impairment and to identify promising research areas, where current national activities could take advantage of such a collaboration in order to increase their efficiency. In particular, it dealt with the develop ment and use of technical aids (mainly based on computers and signal processing techniques) and with the elaboration, evaluation and standardization of new methods and tests. The attendance was multidisciplinary, including researchers from the fields of technology, medicine and psychology and representatives from organizations involved in the rehabi litation of the visually impaired. Five technical sessions were organized, dealing with the following topics: automatic production of Braille and systems for paperless Braille, aids for reading and for the interaction with coded informa tion sources, low vision aids, transduction of visual infor mation into a tactile representation, mobility aids. Three different application sectors were mainly considered: education and culture, vocational training, mobility. A final session was devoted to a discussion in working groups. The results are briefly outlined in the following concise report of the Workshop.

Book Synopsis Pearls of Glaucoma Management by : JoAnn A. Giaconi
Download or read book Pearls of Glaucoma Management written by JoAnn A. Giaconi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have ever uttered the commonly expressed lament, “Glaucoma is so confusing!” then this text is for you. You will no longer be bewildered. Why practitioners may be confused about how to be of help to patients with glaucoma – in its many incarnations and reincarnations – is easily understood. The issue seems to be overwhelming when one considers that the already massive popu- tion of those with glaucoma is increasing rapidly as the world’s population increases and ages. During the past 50 years the fundamental defnition of glaucoma has changed almost 180°, and the indications for treatment have become more variable and c- troversial, some advising early therapy and others strongly cautioning against such an approach: Various diagnostic tests have come and gone and are interpreted in such different ways that there seems to be no consensus; surgical techniques come in and out of fashion in perplexing ways. There seems to be a constantly shifting, sandy foundation on which are built unsteady schools of ever-varying advice. Why prac- tioners, patients, and the public are often bewildered is understandable.
