Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Since the beginnings of Christianity, there has been a fundamental tension between faith and theology. The Reformation, with its principle of sola fide on the one hand and its institutionalisation of a scripture-based academic theology on the other hand, drew particular attention to the tension and suggested new answers to that problem. That effort contributed to a fundamental transformation of academic theology within the faculties of Protestant Theology which emerged as a result of the movement. In the past decades, however, academic theology has come under considerable pressure. [In much of Europe and North America,] The process of secularization has led to a massive decline in religious education and – partially as a reaction to this – to a trivialization of academic theology. At the same time, one can observe a global proliferation of evangelical and Pentecostal groups. These groups sometimes display a certain indifference towards academic theological training, or even reject it altogether. In view of this development the question arises to what extent the relationship between faith and theology as defined in the wake of the Reformation will in future continue to be religiously productive and may thus serve the churches and their congregations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2001 issue of the Yearbook deals with the problem of international justice. What is the meaning of "justice" in the age of globalisation? In which sense can the "right" provide for criteria that make it possible to afford conflicts in international relations? Which new interpretative standards do turn out to be introduced within domestic law by international dimension? This issue of Ars interpretandi tries to answer these questions as well as other ones, according to an interdisciplinary view, which examine their implications in law, ethics, politics, economics and religion.

Book Synopsis The Joyful Science: Bilingual English & German Edition by : Friedrich Nietzsche
Download or read book The Joyful Science: Bilingual English & German Edition written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation into American English from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1882 "Die fröhliche Wissenschaft". This is sometimes translated as "The Gay Science" or "The Happy Science" or "The Joyful Wisdom". This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 5 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Newcomb Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual "Hauptwerke" or complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. The Joyful Science is perhaps his clearest explanation of his Epistemology in relation to his entire philosophic project. Here he writes about the Tautology of Anti-Metaphysical positions, for the very impetuous of them is rooted in Metaphysical assumptions (namely, that objective truth matters at all). Nietzsche’s megalomania begins to bloom in the Joyful Science, taking full form in The Twilight of the Idols. He continues his philosophy of negation and takes on every figure of western philosophy individually, and sometimes in pairs and groups. Christianity, he calls “a permanent suicide of reason” but also for the first time he talks about how the very preoccupation with truth has it’s origin in the “peasant morality” of Christianity.

Book Synopsis Medical Humanity and Inhumanity in the German-Speaking World by : Mererid Puw Davies
Download or read book Medical Humanity and Inhumanity in the German-Speaking World written by Mererid Puw Davies and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical Humanity and Inhumanity in the German-Speaking World is the first volume dedicated to exploring the interface of medicine, the human and the humane in the German-speaking lands. The volume tracks the designation and making through medicine of the human and inhuman, and the humane and inhumane, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Eight individual chapters undertake explorations into ways in which theories and practices of medicine in the German-speaking world have come to define the human, and highlight how such theories and practices have consolidated, or undermined, notions of humane behaviour. Cultural analysis is central to this investigation, foregrounding the reflection, refraction and indeed creation of these theories and practices in literature, life-writing and other discourses and media. Contributors bring to bear perspectives from literary studies, film studies, critical theory, cultural studies, history, and the history of medicine and psychiatry. Thus, this collection is historical in the most expansive sense, for it debates not only what historical accounts bring to our understanding of this topic. It encompasses too investigation of life-writing, documentary, and theory and literary works to bring to light elusive, paradoxical, underexplored – yet vital – issues in history and culture.

Book Synopsis Confessional Theology? by : Rothney S. Tshaka
Download or read book Confessional Theology? written by Rothney S. Tshaka and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian confessions are usually seen as statements of faith which has no relationship with politics. The result is a tendency to view these documents as theological but not political. This study discusses this misconception but adds that although these documents are not to be perceived as political per se, that they can nonetheless not ignore the political contexts from which they emerge. Two confesional documents are discussed to illustrate the point, viz the Barmen Theological Declaration (1934) in Nazi-Germany as well as the Belhar Confession (1986) during apartheid South Africa. The findings of the study is that the theology of Karl Barth and therefore the Belhar Confession establishes and unavoidable link between christian confessions and politics. The word ‘confession’ is used here in relation to Barth’s interpretation of our responsibility to speak about God because of the fact that we are christian and also our inability to speak about God as if God is known in God’s entirety to us. Seen in this way, confesional theology is opposed to tendencies that gives the impresion that we are able to speak about God as if we know Him in His entirety. Five characteristics in the theology of Barth are investigaed. These characteristics illustrate the degree to which theology is related to politics. It also point to the fact that politics was never a marginal factor in the theological reflections of Barth. The study suggests that the theology of Barth remains relevant because it interprets the Word in a manner that does not ignore the contexts in which this interpretation of the Word takes place. The study furthermore suggests that the entire theology of Barth can be construed as confessional theology. It arrives at this end and makes very clear that confessional theology differs fundamentally from ‘confessonalism,’ but that confessional theology always calls for those who espouse it to embody that which is confessed. To uphold the characteristics of confessional theology in the theology of Barth, it is agreed that his theology continued to play significant roles in different theological contexts. It is because of this view that it is argued that the theology of Barth had a great influence on the Belhar Confession. The debate around the Belhar Confession brings further important questions about the theological situation in South Africa today. In the end it is suggested that confessional theology is a significant theological method which can safeguard theology from the claws of ‘theologised politics.’ Confessional theology can thus make a significant contribution to the current theological debates in democratic South Africa.

Book Synopsis Zwischen Philosophie und Gesetz by : Thomas Meyer
Download or read book Zwischen Philosophie und Gesetz written by Thomas Meyer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the revival of intellectual history in recent years, there is still relatively little research into German-Jewish intellectual history between 1933 and 1938. The present work studies for the first time the important discussions of the period from the debate between Leo Strauss and Julius Guttmann, Alexander Altmann’s contribution to “Jewish theology,” to the reception of the work of Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Heidegger as well as the works of David Baumgardt and Fritz Heinemann. Many now forgotten texts of those discussions have been made accessible here. All the leading figures presented in this study were sooner or later forced to choose between “philosophy” and “law.”
Download or read book Reforming Memory written by Robert Vosloo and published by AFRICAN SUN MeDIA. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although we should acknowledge the fragility of memory, we should nevertheless affirm the remarkable ability of memory to reform and transform our identity. Our memories and ways of remembering are, however, often marked by trauma and violence. Memory, therefore, not merely reforms; it too is in need of reformation, redemption and transformation. With this emphasis in mind, Reforming Memory grapples with the question what a responsible engagement with the past entails, also for Christians and churches associated with the Reformed tradition. The history of Reformed churches in South Africa is, one can argue, a deeply divided and ambivalent one. The same figures are heroes to some and villains to others; historic events are deeply ambiguous and conflicting views surround different discourses. Yet the histories, and perhaps futures, of these churches and traditions are inextricably interwoven. Reforming Memory fundamentally combines an interest in the notion of ?memory? with an interest in (South African) Reformed theology and history. Central is the question: how should we remember and represent the past responsibly? The essays collected in this book engage in different ways with this question, attending in the process to some episodes in the history of the Dutch Reformed Church, some influential Reformed theologians, and some important Reformed practices and confessional documents.
