Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present rocket motor cases are being made with Type E commercial glass fibers because of the relative ease of manufacture, high resistance to weathering, strength and low cost. Processing improvements are considered the best immediate means to physical improvements. Some improvement in the modulus of elasticity of Type E glass is possible by modified and improved manufacturing processes, but this may be accompanied by a loss in strength. Significant improvement in the modulus will create new problems in the glass bonding with plastics. The most effective additive for improving the glass modulus is BeO. Continuous filament glass fiber of this type is available, but expensive and difficult to manufacture. While increased modulus of elasticity is needed in fiber glass, only a fraction of this increase can be realized in the bulk modulus of the structures made from the fibers.

Download or read book Nondestructive Testing of Solid-propellant Rocket Motors written by R. L. Pasley and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods are given for nondestructively inspecting rocket motor cases, nozzles, and motor-case insulation. The motor cases may be fabricated from steel, titanium, or glass-reinforced plastics and made by welding or wrapping processes. In some designs, the nozzle consists of tungsten inserts fitted in graphite heat-sink backup rings with a molybdenum sleeve shrunk over the graphite ring. The inside insulation is generally a rubber-base substance adhered to the motor case. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of motor and component design effort, has been completed for the 156-7 Rocket Motor. Design features of the motor will include a monolithic fiberglass case, submerged nozzle, headend ignition system, PBAA propellant grain, elastomeric insulation, and an LITVC system using nitrogen tetroxide secondary injectant. The first fiberglass case has been fabricated and successfully hydroproof tested. The primary objective of the program is the demonstration static firing of a monolithic, flightweight, 156 in. diameter solid propellant motor with liquid injection thrust vector control. (Author).
