Book Synopsis Engineering of Glacial Deposits by : Barry G. Clarke
Download or read book Engineering of Glacial Deposits written by Barry G. Clarke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some time 30% of the world’s land mass was covered by glaciers leaving substantial deposits of glacial soils under major conurbations in Europe, North and South America, New Zealand, Europe and Russia. For instance, 60% of the UK has been affected, leaving significant glacial deposits under major conurbations where two thirds of the population live. Glacial soils are composite soils with significant variations in composition and properties and are recognised as challenging soils to deal with. Understanding the environment in which they were formed and how this affects their behaviour are critical because they do not always conform to classic theories of soil mechanics. This book is aimed at designers and contractors working in the construction and extractive industries to help them mitigate construction hazards on, with or in glacial deposits. These soils increase risks to critical infrastructure which, in the UK includes the majority of the road and rail network, coastal defences such as the fastest eroding coastline in Europe and most of the water supply reservoirs. It brings together many years of experience of research into the behaviour of glacial deposits drawing upon published and unpublished case studies from industry. It draws on recent developments in understanding of the geological processes and the impact they have upon the engineering properties, construction processes and performance of geotechnical structures. Unlike other books on glaciation it brings together all the relevant disciplines in earth sciences and engineering to make it directly relevant to the construction industry.
Book Synopsis Drift Composition and Glacial Dispersal Trains, Baker Lake Area, District of Keewatin, Northwest Territories by : R. A. Klassen
Download or read book Drift Composition and Glacial Dispersal Trains, Baker Lake Area, District of Keewatin, Northwest Territories written by R. A. Klassen and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the District of Keewatin, glacial dispersal trains defined by lithology and geochemistry can be mapped at regional, local, and detailed scales. The trains reflect glacial dynamics and the bedrock composition. This report investigates the glacial dispersal trains in the area of Baker Lake, inshore from northwestern Hudson Bay. It reviews the study area's physiography, vegetation, bedrock and Quaternary geology, and glacial history; describes the study methods used, including till sampling, drill core examination, and geochemical and lithological analyses; and presents and discusses the study results. These results include till geochemistry and pebble lithology at regional and local scale, detailed glacial dispersal patterns at the Kazan River and Bissett Lake sites, and subsurface compositional variations. The implications of the results for mineral exploration based on drift prospecting are discussed.
Book Synopsis Glaciers and Glaciation, 2nd edition by : Douglas Benn
Download or read book Glaciers and Glaciation, 2nd edition written by Douglas Benn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glaciers and Glaciation is the classic textbook for all students of glaciation. Stimulating and accessible, it has established a reputation as a comprehensive and essential resource. In this new edition, the text, references and illustrations have been thoroughly updated to give today's reader an up-to-the minute overview of the nature, origin and behaviour of glaciers and the geological and geomorphological evidence for their past history on earth. The first part of the book investigates the processes involved in forming glacier ice, the nature of glacier-climate relationships, the mechanisms of glacier flow and the interactions of glaciers with other natural systems such as rivers, lakes and oceans. In the second part, the emphasis moves to landforms and sediment, the interpretation of the earth's glacial legacy and the reconstruction of glacial depositional environments and palaeoglaciology.
Book Synopsis Drift Prospecting by : R. N. W. DiLabio
Download or read book Drift Prospecting written by R. N. W. DiLabio and published by Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. This book was released on 1989 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of papers presented in 1987, showing a variety of types of research being carried out in different geological settings in Canada and Finland. The papers indicate the value of grassroots studies in glacial geology and how the basis for drift prospecting is a thorough understanding of the provenance, stratigraphy, and ice flow directions of glacial sequences, backed by data on the geochemistry, lithology, and mineralogy of glacial sediments. Abstracts are included for each paper.

Book Synopsis Geological and Tectonic Framework of Eastern Canada as Interpreted from Potential Field Imagery by : J. M. Woodside
Download or read book Geological and Tectonic Framework of Eastern Canada as Interpreted from Potential Field Imagery written by J. M. Woodside and published by Geological Survey of Canada. This book was released on 1989 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent compilation of all gravity and magnetic anomaly data for offshore and eastern Canada provides an unprecedented perspective on the geological framework of the region. Classification of the region by similarities in the patterns and trends of gravity and magnetic data observed at a scale of 1:5,000,000 indicates geological affinities within structural provinces and tectonic relationships between geological domains. This report examines the correlation between the potential field data and regional geology, and provides a key to the published results and current research on regional structure as interpreted using the available geophysical and geological information.

Book Synopsis Landscapes and Landforms of Eastern Canada by : Olav Slaymaker
Download or read book Landscapes and Landforms of Eastern Canada written by Olav Slaymaker and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-13 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critical book focuses on the geomorphological landscapes of eastern Canada and provides a companion volume to “Landscapes and Landforms of Western Canada” (2017). There are a number of unique characteristics of eastern Canada’s landscapes, notably its magnificent coastlines, the extraordinary variety and extent of wetlands, the huge Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, the high incidence of meteorite craters, the spectacular Niagara Falls, urban karst in Montreal and Ottawa, youthful, glaciated karst in Ontario, Newfoundland, Quebec and Nova Scotia, the ubiquitous permafrost terrain of Nunavut, Labrador and northern Quebec and the magnificent arctic fjords and glaciers. Looking at coastlines, the tidal extremes of the Bay of Fundy are world renowned; the structural complexity of the island of Newfoundland is less well known, but produces an astounding variety of coastlines in close succession; the arctic fjordlands of Baffin and Ellesmere islands and the extravagant raised beaches of Hudson Bay bear comparison with the classic fjords of Norway and the Baltic Sea raised beaches. As for wetlands, there are distinctive Arctic, Subarctic, Boreal, Eastern Temperate and Atlantic wetlands, and their extent is second only to those of Russia. In the Hudson and James Bay regions, between 75-100% of the terrestrial surface is comprised of wetlands. One of North America’s largest river basins, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, has its source in Minnesota, straddles the USA-Canada border and debouches into Quebec as the St. Lawrence River and evolves through its estuary into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a journey of almost 5,000 km. As far as meteorite craters are concerned, 10% of the world’s total are located in eastern Canada, including some of the largest and most complex landforms. They are preserved preferentially in the ancient Shield terrain of Quebec. Finally, the three million km2 of permafrost controlled relief in eastern Canada serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of eastern Canada’s landscapes to climate change. Effects of warming are expressed through thawing of the permafrost, disruption of transportation corridors and urban construction problems, ever-present geomorphic hazards.
