Book excerpt: During ten years serving with the USDA Soil Conservation Service (SCS), now known as the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), I became amazed at how millions of dollars in contract monies were spent based on simplistic hydrologic models. As project engineer in western Kansas, I was responsible for building flood control dams (authorized under Public Law 566) in the Wet Walnut River watershed. This watershed is within the Arkansas-Red River basin, as is the Illinois River basin referred to extensively in this book. After building nearly 18 of these structures, I became Assistant State Engineer in Michigan and, for a short time, State Engineer for NRCS. Again, we based our entire design and construction program on simplified relationships variously referred to as the SCS method. I recall announcing that I was going to pursue a doctoral degree and develop a new hydrologic model. One of my agency's chief engineers remarked, "Oh no, not another model!" Since then, I hope that I have not built just another model but have significantly advanced the state of hydrologic modeling for both researchers and practitioners. Using distributed hydrologic techniques described in this book, I also hope one day to forecast the response of the dams I built.

The study area was divided into fifteen different land units based upon their source of irrigation using the Geographic Information System (GIS). Linear Programming technique was used for maximization of the net profit under the constraints of land, water, food, oil seed, cash crop and fodder requirements. The spatial optimization plan was developed for the study area for the kharif and the rabi seasons separately. In the simulation approach, various alternatives of conjunctive water use scenarios were considered and their impact on groundwater behavior was analysed. Thereafter, a set of those conjunctive water use plans was identified, which could keep the water table within a pre-defined range. Pre-defined range of water table was selected in such a way that the problem of water table depletion or water logging do not occur. The groundwater model MODFLOW was used for analyzing the groundwater behavior. The GIS interface Con2grid was developed to prepare the input file for MODFLOW and display the results.

An integrated hydrologic model called GSFLOW (Ground-water and Surface-water FLOW) was developed to simulate coupled ground-water and surface-water resources. The new model is based on the integration of the U.S. Geological Survey Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) and the U.S. Geological Survey Modular Ground-Water Flow Model (MODFLOW). Additional model components were developed, and existing components were modified, to facilitate integration of the models. Methods were developed to route flow among the PRMS Hydrologic Response Units (HRUs) and between the HRUs and the MODFLOW finite-difference cells. This report describes the organization, concepts, design, and mathematical formulation of all GSFLOW model components. An important aspect of the integrated model design is its ability to conserve water mass and to provide comprehensive water budgets for a location of interest. This report includes descriptions of how water budgets are calculated for the integrated model and for individual model components. GSFLOW provides a robust modeling system for simulating flow through the hydrologic cycle, while allowing for future enhancements to incorporate other simulation techniques.

Groundwater is used for human consumption: for drinking, farming and for maintaining surface water system (rivers) especially during low flow periods. For effective groundwater management, quantitative and qualitative status of groundwater is usually assessed using various groundwater models. These models (for example numerical models) are capable of modelling complex and heterogeneous groundwater conditions. However, due to the requirement of extensive and detailed ground water data, these models are not suitable to be applied in all groundwater systems (major and minor aquifers). Therefore, scientific studies in areas of insignificant groundwater resource (minor aquifers) have been underplayed. However, since all groundwater bodies are significantly important, a new groundwater model was developed in this study. GIS functionality was explored and a GIS-based groundwater model was developed using minimal and accessible input data. GIS was used to represent the subsurface geology particularly the aquifer system and to model groundwater flow. The first model, a GIS based geological model was tested by reconstructing the geology map for the Slea catchment, in the United Kingdom and thickness of the Lincolnshire Limestone aquifer was predicted. The advantage of this model is its capability in predicting an aquifer's thickness without referring to point data like those obtained from boreholes. Then, the second model that is based on topographical and groundwater resistance analysis was used to model natural ground water discharge. Although there is discrepancy between estimated and measured spring discharge, the model has confirmed the usefulness of using GIS tool in modelling groundwater exploring minimal input data and basic modelling procedures. The developed models were not a replacement for numerical groundwater models. However, they would be useful to screen ground water status especially in areas that lack ground water data.

Book excerpt: Since the 1950s, groundwater and surface water models have evolved to better represent complex hydrological and hydrogeological systems. Part of this evolution has been the coupling of surface and subsurface models to properly simulate the transfer of mass between the two systems. While generally robust for simulating phenomena at smaller scales, existing coupled and fully-integrated models are problematic for larger-scale operational use. Fine-scale models are often computationally prohibitive due to the vast amounts of computational data required and because surface and subsurface models are often not discretized the same spatially. Conversely, faster coarse-scale models incorrectly simulate groundwater-surface water exchange fluxes because they neglect the details of subgrid water exchange. The primary goal of this thesis is to develop and test a regional-scale coupled model that may be used in an operational context. The model has two unique features: (1) it uses a novel upscaling formulation for handling groundwater/surface water exchange fluxes and (2) it can operate using unstructured grids (e.g., surface water basin boundaries) as the basic level of discretization for surface water and groundwater systems. The proposed upscaling approach is developed using fine-resolution topography-driven groundwater flow models to generate relationships between vertical water fluxes and average groundwater head. The relationships are used, in coarse-scale models, to represent groundwater-surface water exchange fluxes. These are then implemented in a new groundwater model that is coupled with the surface water model Raven. Comparisons with Modflow and HydroGeosphere are conducted to determine the effectiveness of this new approach.

Book excerpt: The magnitude, location, and timing of groundwater and surface water (GWSW) interaction (both as groundwater discharge and hyporheic cycling) in streams have implications stream ecosystems, nutrient and contaminant reactions, and stream restoration work. In many areas of the world, high phosphorus and nitrate agricultural runoff is a large threat to water quality. The study location, Elton Creek in Cattaraugus County, NY, is located in glacial outwash sediments and is typical of streams in the Great Lakes watershed. We evaluate four general controls of the indicators (stream morphology, stream gradient, bank slope, and in-stream features) of groundwater/surface water (GWSW) interaction using an analytical GIS model of groundwater discharge.^In order to identify locations of GWSW interaction along a 500 m stream reach, a variety of methods were used (including differential streamflow gaging, solute tracers (or channel water balance), and distributed temperature sensor (DTS) monitoring. . A GIS analytical model based on the superimposed indicators was compared to the DTS standard deviation in stream temperature derived gaining and losing portions of the stream. The relative correlation of the individual indicators with groundwater discharge areas was identified for the studied section. It was found that the superposition of indicators was able to delineate areas of groundwater discharge with increasing accuracy. The GIS model of the mapped locations of superimposed indicators is expected to be applicable in a wide range of stream systems to locate areas of potential groundwater discharge, groundwater contaminant discharge, and biogeochemical hotspots.^In addition to identifying the spatial location of groundwater discharge we applied a coupled heat/mass balance model to DTS stream temperature to determine the location and magnitude of groundwater discharge at high spatial resolution. Previous studies using heat/mass balance modeling of GWSW interaction have either averaged temperature over time and distance, or used multiple parameters which are difficult to quantify. We used a simple heat/mass balance model to determine high spatiotemporal resolution groundwater discharge from DTS stream temperature. A rating curve was developed establishing the relationship between head and stream discharge at cross sections using stilling wells with pressure transducers. The upstream discharge was used as the initial condition (for each time step) to model the groundwater discharge at the study location. Additional downstream discharges were used to determine the effectiveness of the model to predict stream discharge.^In this case, it was found that the measurement error in temperature and stream discharge was greater than the variation in predicted downstream streamflow. In addition, the volume of groundwater discharge was not substantial enough to significantly evaluate the model prediction. We suggest that this methodology would be more appropriately applied in shallow streams, with known significant groundwater inputs, and dynamic stream discharge over the studied section.
