Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This collection of poems and anonymous folktales in the Molisan dialect traces the unfolding of two stories which, although distinct, interweave and complete each other: the author's individual story and the story of a town in the South of Italy. The images of an apparently immobile and archaic world alternate with the events of a complex and tormented historical reality, in whose magma the new and the old clash and fuse.

Book excerpt: Soaring past most nations' notion of culture Brazil boasts jungle, concrete, football, corruption, carnival and the place where first and third worlds make easy bedfellows. That such a place is well-charted through maps and guides is hardly surprising but the creative output and impressions of that country have largely been ignored. "Brasil "takes the center stage to lap up the works produced (exclusively for this book) by designers from all corners of the globe.
Book Synopsis Poggio Civitate (Murlo) by : Anthony Tuck
Download or read book Poggio Civitate (Murlo) written by Anthony Tuck and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poggio Civitate in Murlo, Tuscany, is home to one of the best-preserved Etruscan communities of the eighth through the sixth centuries BCE. In this book, Anthony Tuck, the director of excavations, provides a broad synthesis of decades of data from the site. The results of many years of excavation at Poggio Civitate tell a story of growth, urbanization, ancient industrialization, and dissolution. The site preserves traces of aristocratic domestic buildings, including some of the most evocative and enigmatic architectural sculpture in the region, along with remnants of non-elite domestic spaces, enabling illuminating comparisons across social strata. The settlement also features evidence of large-scale production systems, including tools and other objects that reflect the daily experiences of laborers. Finally, the site contains the story of its own destruction. Tuck finds in the data clear indications that Poggio Civitate was methodically dismantled, and he posits hypotheses concerning the circumstances around this violent social and political act.

Book Synopsis Killing and Dying by : Adrian Tomine
Download or read book Killing and Dying written by Adrian Tomine and published by Drawn & Quarterly. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Killing and Dying is a stunning showcase of the possibilities of the graphic novel medium and a wry exploration of loss, creative ambition, identity, and family dynamics. With this work, Adrian Tomine (Shortcomings, Scenes from an Impending Marriage) reaffirms his place not only as one of the most significant creators of contemporary comics but as one of the great voices of modern American literature. His gift for capturing emotion and intellect resonates here: the weight of love and its absence, the pride and disappointment of family, the anxiety and hopefulness of being alive in the twenty-first century. "Amber Sweet" shows the disastrous impact of mistaken identity in a hyper-connected world; "A Brief History of the Art Form Known as Hortisculpture" details the invention and destruction of a vital new art form in short comic strips; "Translated, from the Japanese" is a lush, full-color display of storytelling through still images; the title story, "Killing and Dying", centers on parenthood, mortality, and stand-up comedy. In six interconnected, darkly funny stories, Tomine forms a quietly moving portrait of contemporary life. Tomine is a master of the small gesture, equally deft at signaling emotion via a subtle change of expression or writ large across landscapes illustrated in full color. Killing and Dying is a fraught, realist masterpiece.

Book Synopsis Aphrodite's Tortoise by : Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones
Download or read book Aphrodite's Tortoise written by Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones and published by Classical Press of Wales. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek women routinely wore the veil. That is the unexpected finding of this meticulous study, one with interesting implications for the origins of Western civilisation. The Greeks, popularly (and rightly) credited with the invention of civic openness, are revealed as also part of a more Eastern tradition of seclusion. Llewellyn-Jones' work proceeds from literary and, notably, from iconographic evidence. In sculpture and vase painting it demonstrates the presence of the veil, often covering the head, but also more unobtrusively folded back onto the shoulders. This discreet fashion not only gave a priviledged view of the face to the ancient art consumer, but also, incidentally, allowed the veil to escape the notice of traditional modern scholarship. From Greek literary sources, the author shows that full veiling of the head and face was commonplace. He analyses the elaborate Greek vocabulary for veiling and explores what the veil meant to achieve. He shows that the veil was a conscious extension of the house and was often referred to as `tegidion', literally `a little roof'. Veiling was thus an ingeneous compromise; it allowed women to circulate in public while mainting the ideal of a house-bound existence. Alert to the different types of veil used, the author uses Greek and more modern evidence (mostly from the Arab world) to show how women could exploit and subvert the veil as a means of eloquent, sometimes emotional, communication. First published in 2003 and reissued as a paperback in 2010, Llewellyn-Jones' book has established itself as a central - and inspiring - text for the study of ancient women.

Download or read book The Athenian Woman written by Sian Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Sian Lewis considers the full range of female existence in classical Greece - childhood and old age, unfree and foreign status, and the ageless woman characteristic of Athenian red-figure painting. Ceramics are an unparalleled resource for women's lives in ancient Greece, since they show a huge number of female types and activities. Yet it can be difficult to interpret the meanings of these images, especially when they seem to conflict with literary sources. This much-needed study shows that it is vital to see the vases as archaeology as well as art, since context is the key to understanding which images can stand as evidence for the real lives of women, and which should be reassessed.
