Book excerpt: He's the King of Deception, Until She Becomes His Queen A better man would've said no to her desperate fake marriage proposal. Five years deep in the syndicate, I've built my reputation brick by blood-soaked brick. They call me Saint—a code name that mocks the darkness I've embraced for my country. When the daughter of Italy's most dangerous family begs for my protection, my gut tells me to walk away. But there's something in her eyes that reminds me of the man I used to be. It's supposed to be simple: marry her, shield her from a monster, maintain my cover. When this mission ends, she'll be a wealthy, independent widow. That's the plan. Then night falls on our wedding day, and I discover divine temptation wearing my ring. Beautiful. Brilliant. Brave. Sensual. Everything I can't afford to want. She can never know the real me. There's too much at stake—my mission, my family, my country. But with every passing day, she pulls me further from the darkness, challenging the walls I've built. They say even saints can fall. She might be my ultimate test of faith. From glittering penthouses to deadly back alleys, the seventh book in the Arrow Tactical series is a high-stakes game of deception and desire. Love may be the most dangerous mission of all. Rumors have spread of a devastating new weapon buried beneath the streets - a weapon with the power to destroy a god. As Guerdon strives to remain neutral, two of the most powerful factions in the godswar send agents into the city to find it. As tensions escalate and armies gather at the borders, how long will Guerdon be able to keep its enemies at bay? "A groundbreaking and extraordinary novel . . . Hanrahan has an astonishing imagination" (Peter McLean). The Shadow Saint continues the gripping tale of dark gods and dangerous magic that began with Hanrahan's acclaimed debut The Gutter Prayer.

A unique form of entertainment...and one of the most celebrated forms in burlesque was that of the inimitable Lili St. Cyr. Her body of work as a striptease artist - featuring her innovative on-stage bubble baths and reverse stripteases - was on a level with such dazzling performers as Gypsy Rose Lee and Blaze Starr. And wherever the glamorous Queen of Burlesque appeared, controversy followed. Gilded Lili is the first biography of this pioneering artist, sure to be a smash as burlesque enjoys its own resurgence. Her tempestuous love affairs and troubled life mirror the social changes in sexual politics and the commercialisation of sexuality. A compelling biography and an intriguing take on feminist history, Gilded Lili is golden indeed.

Book excerpt: The sculpture of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), called the American Michelangelo, has often been compared to the magnificent works of the Renaissance. As an advocate of new ideas and a new approach to sculpture, Saint-Gaudens played a preeminent role in developing America's cultural life and revitalizing the art of sculpture in the modern age. (1861-65), when numerous monuments were commissioned to commemorate the national crisis and subsequent unification. In addition, the amassing of private fortunes during the country's unprecedented economic and financial growth led to an interest in sculpture for personal collections. Saint-Gaudens contributed works of both types. His Shaw Memorial (1897), commemorating the Massachusetts Fifty-fourth Regiment, the first U.S. Army unit of African Americans, and his Lincoln Monument (1887) are among the most moving of the nation's Civil War monuments, while his Adams Memorial (1891) is one of the most evocative of his privately commissioned works. France and spent eight years in Europe, where he found a freer and bolder form of artistic expression. On his return to the United States in 1875, he used his European training to create a new American style incorporating simplicity of subject, realism of form, and strength of emotion. In addition to his monuments, his works also included interior decoration for some of the great houses of the Gilded Age, portrait reliefs, and medals and U.S. coinage. his and the subsequent generation of American sculptors through his teaching and his lead in establishing organizations for the support and training of American artists, including the Society of American Artists. His legacy, as both artist and educator, is nothing less than the shaping of American culture.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The collection of Italian medieval sculpture in The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters began with the acquisition in 1908 of a Romanesque column statue; today the Museum's holdings comprise more than seventy works dating from the ninth to the late fifteenth century ... The birthplaces of these works range from Sicily to Venice; some typify local styles, others illustrate the intense artistic exchanges taking place within Italy and between Italy and the wider world ... Technological advances of the last decades have made it possible to determine more precisely the materials and techniques from which works of art are made, the history of their alteration, and the mechanisms of their deterioration. Using such techniques, scholars have been able to ascertain, for example, that sculptures previously thought to be modern works carved in the medieval manner were in fact completely authentic. This innovative volume represents a watershed in the study of sculpture: a collaborative dialogue between an art historian and a conservator—between art history and art science—that deepens our understanding of the object we see, while illuminating its elusive, enigmatic history"--From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Kelly Donahue-Wallace surveys the art and architecture created in the Spanish Viceroyalties of New Spain, Peru, New Granada, and La Plata from the time of the conquest to the independence era. Emphasizing the viceregal capitals and their social, economic, religious, and political contexts, the author offers a chronological review of the major objects and monuments of the colonial era. In order to present fundamental differences between the early and later colonial periods, works are offered chronologically and separated by medium - painting, urban planning, religious architecture, and secular art - so the aspects of production, purpose, and response associated with each work are given full attention. Primary documents, including wills, diaries, and guild records are placed throughout the text to provide a deeper appreciation of the contexts in which the objects were made.
