The hunters were on the lookout for Gigi's exquisite coat because they believed it would fetch a high price on the underground market. They weren't concerned about the welfare of the animals they were shooting; all that mattered to them was the money they could make. Gigi recognized that she needed to move rapidly in order to escape the situation. She tried to get away, but the hunters' guns were too powerful for her long legs to overcome. They were successful in capturing her and placing her in a massive container, in which she had very little room to walk around. Gigi was left wondering what was going to happen to her as she lay in the crate, which was filled with darkness and smelled of her own anxiousness. She'd heard tales about other animals being taken by hunters and sold into captivity, and the idea of spending the rest of her life in a zoo worried her.
