Book excerpt: This double biography depicts the lives of the famed Nova Scotia giantess Anna Swan (1846-88) and the celebrated Cape Breton giant Angus McAskill (1825-63). These two splendid and singular celebrities toured the world entertaining royalty and impressing audiences from town halls to palaces. Angus and Anna's Scottish influences were deeply embedded from childhood and although it was unlikely the two ever met, the similarities in their lives were uncanny. During their adventures, both giants worked with and met many unusual characters. Both met Queen Victoria. Anna married an American giant and the two toured as "The Tallest Married Couple in the World." The book explores the causes of gigantism and how this rare condition shaped the lives and personalities of these two Nova Scotians. Anna and Angus were born to normal-sized, hard-working parents and grew up in rural surroundings but rose to great stardom on the world stage. Both were regarded for their kind hearts and compassion for others. They have left a meaningful message for readers that resonates more than a century after their deaths. Both are honoured at museums in Nova Scotia that house their artifacts. Thousands of people flock to these sites to learn about these great giants.

Elizabeth McCracken's small masterpiece is one of these' Guardian A powerful and unique story about connection, showing that miracles can happen – even across a library circulation desk. The year is 1950, and in a small town on Cape Cod twenty-eight year old librarian Peggy Cort feels as if love and life have stood her up. That is, until the day James Carlson Sweatt – the 'over-tall' eleven year old boy who's the talk of the town – walks into her library and changes her life for ever. Two misfits whose lonely paths cross at the circulation desk, Peggy and James are odd candidates for friendship. In James, Peggy discovers the one person who's ever really understood her, and as he grows – six foot five at age twelve, then seven foot, then eight – so does their most singular romance. *Perfect for readers who loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine*

Book excerpt: Man in his youth was so fond of giants that, not finding them large or plentiful enough, he created a bounteous supply. He gave them precedence of himself. In the frozen North they came even before the gods: in the East, after the celestials but before the creation of the world; in Greece they sprang into being just after the Olympians and fiercely disputed the sovereignty of Zeus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did a race of ancient giants once inhabit the Americas? Do ancient megalithic stoneworks, out-of-place artifacts, DNA mysteries, and strange bones provide proof of their existence? Ancient Giants of the Americas reveals an array of astounding truths, including: How giants were a dominant feature of Native American origin myths. Extraordinary first-person tales about meetings with giant Native Americans. How early pioneers discovered the remains of ancient giants and a previously unknown civilization—and how the Smithsonian successfully covered them up. Analyzing the historical and archaeological evidence, Xaviant Haze provides ample proof that our ancestors in the ancient Americas were much taller and a lot more mysterious than we imagine. Their exploits inspired the Native Americans to keep oral accounts of these mysterious giants, who left behind strange artifacts, massive cities of burial mounds, and the remains of a vast copper-mining network. Who were these ancient giants? Did some really have six toes? Were some related to the elongated-skull peoples of Peru? Your view of American history will never be the same after going down the giant rabbit hole that is Ancient Giants of the Americas.

Book excerpt: Every year, the race to grow the biggest pumpkin in the world draws a rowdy crowd of obsessive gardeners to county fairs and weigh-offs across the country. The competition is furious; there's sabotage and treachery and the heartbreak of root rot, and many a weigh-off ends in tears. This year, more than just the grand prize is at stake. The Holy Grail is within reach: the world's first fifteenhundred-pound pumpkin. And Ron and Dick Wallace think they have what it takes to get it. Backyard Giants follows a tumultuous season in the life of a close-knit tribe of competitors as they chase down the ultimate pumpkin prize. In the grueling and gut-wrenching quest for truly colossal fruit, vacations are postponed, marriages are strained, and savings accounts are emptied. Backyards are converted into leafy laboratories of biogenetics and toxic chemicals-to say nothing of pumpkin sex. Riding shotgun with Ron and his father Dick, Wall Street Journal editor Susan Warren brings to life a winning and unforgettable crew of pumpkin lunatics: the newbie who shocked everyone by growing the big one last year; the pro-bono slime scientist; the groundhog assassin; and the safety trainer who risked electrocuting himself to save his patch. Funny, sharp, and engaging, Backyard Giants is a romp through a charming corner of American life, as quirky and enchanting as the big pumpkins themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Short Story About Giants by Richard Crowe is a great recounting of a conversation between a grandfather and his grandson. This is a story not only about making a connection with your loved ones, but also showing them that history can be found in more than just history books. The grandfathers goal is to keep his grandson, Cody, interested in learning something new all the time...I remember learning just the basic story of David and Goliath. The way the grandfather related the story made such an impact on Cody, the grandson, that he will remember it for the rest of his life. It also sparked his interest in learning more about giants. His grandfather is savvy enough to use this chance to teach Cody parts of the Bible and an ongoing history that we rarely pay attention to. Codys interest was not the only one that was piqued during this brief history of giants. I found myself doing a lot of research after I finished reading it...This short story is only about 13 pages long, but it packs a powerful punch. There is even room to throw in a bit of a love story in the telling. This is not a book that will be easily forgotten, and I look forward to reading it to my grandchildren to see what kind of questions it may spark from them...I give this book 4 OUT OF 4 STARS. I wish we would all find a way to teach our children a little history every day...This grandfather found a way to inspire Cody to take an interest and ask more questions. If we make history interesting, we would want to learn more, and learn it better. Review by dhomespot August 26, 2017
