Book excerpt: Before European colonists first dipped their toes in our "Nation's River," it succored generations of American Indians, who added their own stories and often stained its banks with their blood. Revolutionary War ghosts haunt its length, from Shepherdstown to Saint George's Island. Harpers Ferry is home to more than one nineteenth-century haunt, and ghosts of Civil War soldiers linger in the river's upper reaches. Former residents still reside in historic buildings in Sterling, Arlington and Alexandria. Point Lookout, at the mouth of the river, is the most haunted site in Maryland. While the Potomac has weathered horrors and tragedies, many residents did not. Author David W. Thompson tells their stories.

Book excerpt: The family history mysteries by Elaine L. Orr take you to Western Maryland' Mountains. Explore life today with Digger, a local graphics artist who has a knack for discovering things others might want to stay hidden. Starting with Book 2, she gets perspective from her late Uncle Benjamin, who reappeared on her kitchen table soon after the last shovel of dirt fell onto his grave. His advice can be helpful, annoying, or witty - it depends on whether you want to hear it. Get introduced to the series with Least Trodden Ground, The Unscheduled Murder Trip, and Mountain Rails of Old. Reviews of the Series Least Trodden Ground Least Trodden Ground hits all the notes! It has every element I want in a cozy mystery and presents them so well that I ordered book 2 when I was only half way through reading this one. Intelligent, likeable characters with a good sense of humor and good hearts paired well with a strong plot that kept me reading from beginning to end non-stop! The Unscheduled Murder Trip Elaine Orr's new series has a couple of neat twists in it. No cupcake bakers or dog groomers here; instead, Digger's hobby interest is family genealogy. Of course, then there's bound to be skeletons in the closets. Add in a ghost and you've got the makings of a fun new cozy series. "Unscheduled Murder Trip" mixes an old mystery with some feisty present day descendants and a few contemporaries. A fun read! Mountain Rails of Old I recommend the Family History Series, which is Elaine's most ambitious: She's channeling a spirit in addition to her always interesting living characters. I love how she brings the town and all the characters to life (even the ghost!) It's fun to learn about this corner of Maryland, fun to play genealogy detective, and fun to figure out "whodunit"!

Book excerpt: Mountain Rails of Old Family History Mystery Series Book 3 An abandoned cottage and its long-gone occupants pique Digger’s interest when she and her friend Marty visit to take photographs for a news story. Then Uncle Benjamin makes a huge discovery nearby. What happened to Samantha and her eight-year-old daughter, and how many ghosts does Digger need in her life? If it hadn’t been for a growling raccoon, she would not have badgered enough people to find out, and she might not have looked for a former station on the Underground Railroad.

Book excerpt: "In the 1700s, poor Yankees and freed slaves carved out homesteads on a rugged mountain on the New York-Connecticut border. They shared the mountain with the embattled Schaghticoke Indian tribe. This is the story of both groups' failed attempts to hold onto their land in the shadow of America's first industrial boom--the age of iron. The people abandoned the mountain and the forest grew back. All that remains is a ghost town."--Cover.

Book excerpt: The Unscheduled Murder Trip Book 2 in the Family History Mystery Series Digger Browning found her reinvigorated uncle sitting on the kitchen table in the Ancestral Sanctuary, the home she inherited from him. A bigger surprise was tripping over a body while taking pictures at the abandoned former train depot. She thinks the body is linked to a long-ago disappearance in her town of Mountain Grove. She digs into old records and wonders if the fifty-plus year-old murder relates to her current business and a modern-day death. As she tries to make sense of the past and present, Uncle Benjamin’s spirit roams the Ancestral Sanctuary and goes where Digger goes, including the graphic design firm Digger founded with her friend Holly. He never hesitates to offer a pithy comment. Meanwhile, Digger’s friend Marty wonders if Digger’s odd mutterings mean she’s losing it. He gets more convinced when Digger seems to call to her uncle as someone takes pot shots at the two of them. What happens when an apparition’s medium tells others about the ghost that she alone sees? Will Digger have to lose Uncle Benjamin to get close to anyone else?

Book excerpt: Deserted towns are time capsules of the past, and the 11 places explored in this book all have a past marked by tragedy. The Lost Colony, for example, on Virginia’s Roanoke Island, was the first place the English established residence in the new world. But between 1587 and 1590, something went very wrong. All 115 residents, including women and children, simply vanished. Many theories abound about what happened to them, but no one knows for sure. Tales such as these will keep young readers turning the pages as they learn about a fascinating part of history. Ghost Towns is part of Bearport’s Scary Places series.
