Book Synopsis International Handbook of Violence Research by : Wilhelm Heitmeyer
Download or read book International Handbook of Violence Research written by Wilhelm Heitmeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-12 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An international manual is like a world cruise: a once-in-a-lifetime experience. All the more reason to consider carefully whether it is necessary. This can hardly be the case if previous research in the selected field has already been the subject of an earlier review-or even several competing surveys. On the other hand, more thorough study is necessary if the intensity and scope of research are increasing without comprehensive assessments. That was the situation in Western societies when work began on this project in the summer of 1998. It was then, too, that the challenges emerged: any manual, espe cially an international one, is a very special type of text, which is anything but routine. It calls for a special effort: the "state of the art" has to be documented for selected subject areas, and its presentation made as compelling as possible. The editors were delighted, therefore, by the cooperation and commitment shown by the eighty-one contributors from ten countries who were recruited to write on the sixty-two different topics, by the con structive way in which any requests for changes were dealt with, and by the patient re sponse to our many queries. This volume is the result of a long process. It began with the first drafts outlining the structure of the work, which were submitted to various distinguished colleagues. Friedheim Neidhardt of Berlin, Gertrud Nunner-Winkler of Munich, and Roland Eckert of Trier, to name only a few, supplied valuable comments at this stage.

Download or read book Men Under Fire written by Jiří Hutečka and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In historical writing on World War I, Czech-speaking soldiers serving in the Austro-Hungarian military are typically studied as Czechs, rarely as soldiers, and never as men. As a result, the question of these soldiers’ imperial loyalties has dominated the historical literature to the exclusion of any debate on their identities and experiences. Men under Fire provides a groundbreaking analysis of this oft-overlooked cohort, drawing on a wealth of soldiers’ private writings to explore experiences of exhaustion, sex, loyalty, authority, and combat itself. It combines methods from history, gender studies, and military science to reveal the extent to which the Great War challenged these men’s senses of masculinity, and to which the resulting dynamics influenced their attitudes and loyalties.
Book Synopsis Violence in Late Antiquity by : H.A. Drake
Download or read book Violence in Late Antiquity written by H.A. Drake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Violence' is virtually synonymous in the popular imagination with the period of the Later Roman Empire-a time when waves of barbarian invaders combined with urban mobs and religious zealots to bring an end to centuries of peace and serenity. All of these images come together in the Visigothic sack of the city of Rome in A.D. 410, a date commonly used for the fall of the entire empire. But was this period in fact as violent as it has been portrayed? A new generation of scholars in the field of Late Antiquity has called into question the standard narrative, pointing to evidence of cultural continuity and peaceful interaction between "barbarians" and Romans, Christians and pagans. To assess the state of this question, the fifth biennial 'Shifting Frontiers' conference was devoted to the theme of 'Violence in Late Antiquity'. Conferees addressed aspects of this question from standpoints as diverse as archaeology and rhetoric, anthropology and economics. A selection of the papers then delivered have been prepared for the present volume, along with others commissioned for the purpose and a concluding essay by Martin Zimmerman, reflecting on the theme of the book. The four sections on Defining Violence, 'Legitimate' Violence, Violence and Rhetoric, and Religious Violence are each introduced by a theme essay from a leading scholar in the field. While offering no definitive answer to the question of violence in Late Antiquity, the papers in this volume aim to stimulate a fresh look at this age-old problem.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Neudenken Von Kultur und Kulturanalyse by : Joaquim Braga
Download or read book Neudenken Von Kultur und Kulturanalyse written by Joaquim Braga and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2013 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The texts in this collection are revised versions of presentations given at the Coimbra International Conference on the Semantics of Culture Why "Culture"?, held on November 24-25, 2011. Their common theme is the idea that the phenomenon of culture cannot be reduced to a substantialist vision of the diversity of manifestations of society and human beings. However, if one were to accept the concept of culture as a starting point for observing these manifestations, then it should also be adopted as a starting point for critical questioning, that is, for problematizing. The texts in this volume contribute to this philosophical problematization by pointing out - each with its own perspective of analysis - articulations of the phenomenon of culture as a theoretical object and as a thematic object.

Download or read book Gewaltgenuss, Zorn und Gelächter written by Claudia Ansorge and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Control of Violence by : Wilhelm Heitmeyer
Download or read book Control of Violence written by Wilhelm Heitmeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Control of Violence in Modern Society, starts from the hypothesis that in modern society we will face an increasing loss of control over certain phenomena of violence. This leads to unpredictable escalations and violence can no longer be contained adequately by the relevant control regimes, such as police, state surveillance institutions, national repression apparatuses and international law. However, before investigating this hypothesis from an internationally and historically comparative perspective, the terms and "tools" for this undertaking have to be rendered more precisely. Since both "control" and "violence" are all but clear-cut terms but rather highly debatable and contested concepts that may take multiple connotations. The main question is whether an increase in certain forms of violence can be explained by the failure or, in turn, "overeffectiveness" of certain control mechanisms. It is asked, for instance, which contribution religion can make to limit violence and, in turn, which destructive potential religion might have in its fundamentalist form. Moreover, the concept of individual self-control as well as social institutions and strategies of collective disengagement and de-radicalization are investigated with regard to their potential for controlling violence. The Control of Violence in Modern Society concludes with a re-examination of the hypothesis of a loss of control by specifying in what cases and under which circumstances we can speak of a loss of control over violence.

Book Synopsis Schiller: National Poet – Poet of Nations by :
Download or read book Schiller: National Poet – Poet of Nations written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To mark the 200th anniversary of Schiller’s death, leading scholars from Germany, Canada, the UK and the USA have contributed to this volume of commemorative essays. These were first presented at a symposium held at the University of Birmingham in June 2005. The essays collected here shed important new light on Schiller’s standing as a national and transnational figure , both in his own lifetime and in the two hundred years since his death. Issues explored include: aspects of Schiller’s life and work which contributed to the creation of heroic and nationalist myths of the poet during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; his activities as man of the theatre and publisher in his own, pre-national context; the (trans-)national dimensions of Schiller’s poetic and dramatic achievement in their contemporary context and with reference to later appropriations of national(ist) elements in his work. The contributions to this volume illuminate Schiller’s achievements as poet, playwright, thinker and historian, and bring acute insights to bear on both the history of his impact in a variety of contexts and his enduring importance as a point of cultural reference.
