Book excerpt: “Witty, compelling, and just plain fun to read . . ." —Evelyn Lamb, Scientific American The Freakonomics of math—a math-world superstar unveils the hidden beauty and logic of the world and puts its power in our hands The math we learn in school can seem like a dull set of rules, laid down by the ancients and not to be questioned. In How Not to Be Wrong, Jordan Ellenberg shows us how terribly limiting this view is: Math isn’t confined to abstract incidents that never occur in real life, but rather touches everything we do—the whole world is shot through with it. Math allows us to see the hidden structures underneath the messy and chaotic surface of our world. It’s a science of not being wrong, hammered out by centuries of hard work and argument. Armed with the tools of mathematics, we can see through to the true meaning of information we take for granted: How early should you get to the airport? What does “public opinion” really represent? Why do tall parents have shorter children? Who really won Florida in 2000? And how likely are you, really, to develop cancer? How Not to Be Wrong presents the surprising revelations behind all of these questions and many more, using the mathematician’s method of analyzing life and exposing the hard-won insights of the academic community to the layman—minus the jargon. Ellenberg chases mathematical threads through a vast range of time and space, from the everyday to the cosmic, encountering, among other things, baseball, Reaganomics, daring lottery schemes, Voltaire, the replicability crisis in psychology, Italian Renaissance painting, artificial languages, the development of non-Euclidean geometry, the coming obesity apocalypse, Antonin Scalia’s views on crime and punishment, the psychology of slime molds, what Facebook can and can’t figure out about you, and the existence of God. Ellenberg pulls from history as well as from the latest theoretical developments to provide those not trained in math with the knowledge they need. Math, as Ellenberg says, is “an atomic-powered prosthesis that you attach to your common sense, vastly multiplying its reach and strength.” With the tools of mathematics in hand, you can understand the world in a deeper, more meaningful way. How Not to Be Wrong will show you how.

Book excerpt: Protect and grow your finances with help from this definitive and practical guide to behavioral economics—revised and updated to reflect new economic realities. In their fascinating investigation of the ways we handle money, Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich reveal the psychological forces—the patterns of thinking and decision making—behind seemingly irrational behavior. They explain why so many otherwise savvy people make foolish financial choices: why investors are too quick to sell winning stocks and too slow to sell losing shares, why home sellers leave money on the table and home buyers don’t get the biggest bang for their buck, why borrowers pay too much credit card interest and savers can’t sock away as much as they’d like, and why so many of us can’t control our spending. Focusing on the decisions we make every day, Belsky and Gilovich provide invaluable guidance for avoiding the financial faux pas that can cost thousands of dollars each year. Filled with fresh insight; practical advice; and lively, illustrative anecdotes, this book gives you the tools you need to harness the powerful science of behavioral economics in any financial environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever noticed that we tend to compartmentalize when teaching our children? In real life, there aren’t artificial barriers between “subjects.” For example, when you are cooking or baking, you have to use the skills of reading, logical thinking, and measuring, just to name a few. In driving a car, you see and read road signs, read maps, and count miles. It has become quite clear that there is an abundance of math curriculums available that are nothing but monotonous drill sheets dressed up in pretty colors. Pretty colors do not make a living book. Content, story, and the ability to show math in real life make a living math book. Math Level 1: Teach math lessons through the creative means of a life storyProvides a link for the downloadable answer keyHas a scope and sequence that contains learning numbers 0 to 100, circles and patterns, counting and addition, days of the week, and telling time. This book was written to be used by you and your young student together. It is the story of a twin brother and sister, Charlie and Charlotte, who are visiting their grandparents’ farm. They soon learn that the farm is full of learning opportunities! As you read their story, your students will be drawn into the adventure along with the twins. They will learn about numbers, shapes, place value, adding, and subtracting. They will also learn about gardening, baby animals on the farm, nature, and the love of family. They will hear exciting stories from Grandpa and Grandma, and they will be invited to join the twins on their living math adventures. We hope you have a grand time on this adventure!

From the moment your kids are born, the kiddie-perfecting complex is pushing you to buy-buy-buy. And playtime is no different. You feel pressured to sign the kids up for an ever-escalating array of classes and clinics, send them to the right sleep-away or math enrichment camp, soccer clinic, ballet, art, and music classes—or else they’re doomed to fail. Right? Not so fast. Lifestyle guru Rosalyn Hoffman knows that kids need balance: time to be bored and find their own inner resources, time to ride their bikes and shoot hoops, time to experience the joy of free play. And when it’s time to sign them up for organized activities, Hoffman offers sane guidance for navigating the world of lessons and programs, explaining how to get them in everything from art classes to music lessons to sports to camp—without breaking the bank.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children enter school filled with all kinds of ideas about numbers, shapes, measuring tools, time, and money--ideas formed from the expressions they hear ... the things they see on television ... the computer screen ... in children's books ... all around them. It's no wonder some children develop very interesting and perhaps incorrect ideas about mathematical concepts. "How can we connect the informal knowledge that students bring to our classrooms with the mathematics program adopted by our school system? Just as important, how do we ensure that the mathematics we are introducing and reinforcing is accurate and will not need to be re-taught in later years?" Math Misconceptions answers these questions by: identifying the most common errors relative to the five NCTM content strands (number and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability); investigating the source of these misunderstandings; proposing ways to avoid as well as "undo" misconceptions. Using classroom vignettes that highlight common misconceptions in each content area, followed by applicable research about the root causes of the confusion, the authors offer numerous instructional ideas and interventions designed to prevent or correct the misconception. --Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Easy Money Math Quiz For Kids Book 3 contains worksheets that can help you teach kids to count money. Can you imagine not knowing how to count money well? You'd never know if you got the right amount of change back. You wouldn't even know how much to give the cashier. You'd not be able to budget or to keep track of your total while shopping. Wouldn't that be terrible? Money skills are very important. Children begin learning about money so young to ensure they have a good grasp on handling money when they are adults. Here's how you can help your child to learn to count money. Children may not quite understand the concept of money in terms of cost and what constitutes a good value, but most kids like money because they know you need money to buy things you want. Teaching children to count money is one of the basic concepts that they will use during the course of their entire lives, but can be confusing at first. Make sure your child has a basic understanding of simple math before introducing easy ways to count money. Children begin to learn about money at a very early age. It begins in first grade. As young as age six and seven your child learns the coin names and values. By the end of second grade children are adding and subtracting dollar amounts. Children need all the help they can get learning how to count money. These skills are needed not only for school, but also for life. Teaching money is the perfect candidate for hands-on learning. Get out the real thing, use play money, or even make your own, but the more realistic the better. Learning about money, how to earn it, save it, and spend it is of great interest to children! So they are naturally very motivated to learn how to count it. Children also instinctively recognize money as a medium of exchange and a symbolic form of power. Gradually involving children in the everyday financial affairs of the home makes good sense and will help take the mystique out of those shiny coins Preschoolers can begin to count money as soon as they begin learning to count. They may not know coin values, but show them small sets of coins separated by denomination and let them count with you. The first thing a child needs to learn is to identify the coins. They need to know the coin names and values. A penny is called a penny. That is it's name. A penny is worth one cent. To teach your child the coin names and values tell them what they are while showing them a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and fifty cent piece. Kids learn from being shown and told. It may take telling and showing your child each coin several times. Work on one coin at a time, this prevents confusion. The very best way I have of teaching coin counting is to start the first day of school and do it every day. Hershey points out in his new book, 'All the Math You Need to Get Rich: Thinking With Numbers for Financial Success'... none of us can afford to maintain a phobia about math. "... I highly recommend Hershey's book because he uses examples... to walk you through the many different mathematical equations you'll need to understand such concepts as percentages, the time value of money, and compound interest. "... As Hershey says, 'Thinking with numbers helps you to plan ahead, so you'll have money now and money later, too.'" 'Michelle Singletary, Washington Post, February 10, 2002.
