Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marking the 100-year anniversary of women's suffrage, Leslie Hill provides a fascinating survey of the history of first wave feminism in British theatre, from the London premiere of Ibsen's A Doll's House in 1889 through the militant suffrage movement. Hill's approachable overview explores some of the pivotal ways in which theatre makers both engaged with and influenced feminist discourse on topics such as sexual agency, reproductive rights, marriage equality, financial independence and suffrage. Clear and concise, this is an ideal resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students of theatre and performance studies taking courses on Women in Theatre and Performance, Staging Feminism, Early Feminist Theatre, Theatre and Suffrage, Gender and Theatre, Political Theatre and Performance Historiography. This text will also appeal to scholars, lecturers, and Literature students.
Book Synopsis Shaw and the Actresses Franchise League by : Ellen Ecker Dolgin
Download or read book Shaw and the Actresses Franchise League written by Ellen Ecker Dolgin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early 20th century non-commercial theaters emerged as hubs of social transformation on both sides of the Atlantic. The 1904-1907 seasons at London's Royal Court Theatre were a particularly galvanizing force, with 11 plays by Bernard Shaw--along with works by Granville Barker, John Galsworthy and Elizabeth Robins--that starred activist performers and challenged social conventions. Many of these plays were seen on American stages. Featuring more conversation than plot points, the new drama collectively urged audiences to recognize themselves in the characters. In 1908, four hundred actresses attended a London hotel luncheon, determined to effect change for women. The hot topics--chillingly pertinent today--mixed public and private controversies over sexuality, income distribution and full citizenship across gender and class lines. A resolution emerged to form the Actresses Franchise League, which produced original suffrage plays, participated in mass demonstrations and collaborated with ordinary women.

The essays cover both literary and artistic subjects, across geographical, linguistic and disciplinary boundaries. Various aspects of the English, Irish, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Polish avant-gardes are explored, examining both diverse literary genres such as prose, poetry and drama, and specific avant-garde movements such as Futurism and Surrealism. The volume includes a lengthy introductory essay by Prof. John J. White, Emeritus Professor of German and Comparative Literature at King’s College London. Avant-garde studies can be enhanced and developed through dialogue with other disciplines, such as translation, gender, exile and comparative studies. Thus, the volume is divided into four sections: Representations of the Body; Translating the Avant-Garde, Identity and Exile; and Comparative Perspectives and the Legacy of the Avant-Garde.

It was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s; Trollope had just returned to England from abroad, and was appalled by the greed and dishonesty those scandals exposed. This novel was his rebuke. It dramatised how such greed and dishonesty pervaded the commercial, political, moral, and intellectual life of that era. Excerpt: "Let the reader be introduced to Lady Carbury, upon whose character and doings much will depend of whatever interest these pages may have, as she sits at her writing-table in her own room in her own house in Welbeck Street.
