Book Synopsis Fracking Goats - A5 edition by : Gerald Lucas
Download or read book Fracking Goats - A5 edition written by Gerald Lucas and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the Karoo, with its delicately poised ecosystem and giant life-sustaining aquifer, perched atop a major gas field? Can the contentious 'fracking' method of extraction bring a turnaround to the fortunes of Martinus Grobbelaar and the other Angora goat farmers of the fictitious town of Kinloch? In this, his debut novel, Gerald Lucas combines the techniques of traditional fireside storytelling and latter-day soap opera scripting to look beyond the merely theoretical implications of this hot issue. Through his capable characterisation he sketches the effect that the race to be the first oil company to prove that there is gas under the aquifer and its extractable viability has on the local community. Should something go wrong, will it be the end of the Karoo ecosystem or will the inhabitants reap rich rewards?

Download or read book Galactic Diplomat written by Keith Laumer and published by Gateway. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retief is an officer of the distinguished Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne, a supra-national organization devoted to keeping the peace - or more accurately, to maintaining a state of tension short of armed conflict. Retief is not exactly in the mainstream of current Galactic diplomacy, as expounded by such giants of the C.D.T. as Crodfoller, Hidebinder, Straphanger, and his own immediate superior, Magnan. Deviously sincere, uncompromisingly venal, fearlessly cowardly, these great, dedicated public servants will seem curiously familiar as they strive to keep the peace seven hundred years in the future. But when Retief's on the scene things have a way of coming right in the end... Book Synopsis The Golden Bough By Sir James George Frazer by : Sir James George Frazer
Download or read book The Golden Bough By Sir James George Frazer written by Sir James George Frazer and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 1541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this book is to explain the remarkable rule which regulated the succession to the priesthood of Diana at Aricia. When I first set myself to solve the problem more than thirty years ago, I thought that the solution could be propounded very briefly, but I soon found that to render it probable or even intelligible it was necessary to discuss certain more general questions, some of which had hardly been broached before. In successive editions the discussion of these and kindred topics has occupied more and more space, the enquiry has branched out in more and more directions, until the two volumes of the original work have expanded into twelve. Meantime a wish has often been expressed that the book should be issued in a more compendious form. This abridgment is an attempt to meet the wish and thereby to bring the work within the range of a wider circle of readers. While the bulk of the book has been greatly reduced, I have endeavoured to retain its leading principles, together with an amount of evidence sufficient to illustrate them clearly. The language of the original has also for the most part been preserved, though here and there the exposition has been somewhat condensed. In order to keep as much of the text as possible I have sacrificed all the notes, and with them all exact references to my authorities. Readers who desire to ascertain the source of any particular statement must therefore consult the larger work, which is fully documented and provided with a complete bibliography.

Download or read book Return to Camdeboo written by Eve Palmer and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was all well-ordered, food following on food in its appointed season; and this is a rhythm that has continued for more than a century - it is still very much that of the farm today... 'As there were times for special meats, so there were times for vegetables and fruits in their season - marvellous cabbages and cauliflowers, lettuce, peas, broad beans and parsnips in winter, and also oranges, naartjies, lemons and grapefruit; spring brought green beans, tomatoes, brinjals, green peppers, fennel, marrows, fruit of many kinds; and autumn meant pumpkins and pears, quinces and apples - with the first tang in the air we could smell the quinces.' The pages of Return to Camdeboo provide a refuge from the world of fast food - faithfully recorded recipes and culinary observations from generations of South African farm cooking. Although not strictly a cookbook, it explores the activities of choosing, cooking and eating food, and includes a wide selection of traditional recipes. Spanning well over a hundred years, the writing conveys both the abundance and hardships of life at Cranemere farm (on the Plains of Camdeboo of the Karoo), replete with insight into the existence of Camdeboo dwellers from the distant and recent past. Threads of agricultural and culinary history are intertwined with Eve Palmer's personal reflections and family narratives. Tried and tested by generations of cooks at Cranemere farm, most notably including the author herself; Return to Camdeboo evokes a sense of place and time that will fascinate all with an interest in the pleasures of meals created from local seasonal ingredients.

Once there, he would go on to spend much of his time during the next 25 years in the Death Valley region, witnessing the transition of Death Valley from a prospector’s hunting ground to a mecca for winter tourists. This book, which was first published in 1951, is William Caruthers’ personal narrative of the old days in Death Valley—”of people and places in Panamint Valley, the Amargosa Desert and the big sink at the bottom of America.” A wonderful read.
Book Synopsis Of Goats & Governors by : Steve Flowers
Download or read book Of Goats & Governors written by Steve Flowers and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few states have as colorful a political history as Alabama, especially in the post-World War II era. During the past six decades, the state played a central role in the civil rights movement, largely moved away from its earlier farm-based economy and culture, and transitioned from a relatively moderate-progressive Democratic Party politics to today's hard-core conservative Republican Party domination. Moving onto and off Alabama's electoral stage during all these transformations have been some of the most interesting figures in 20th-century American government and politics. Swirling around these elected officials in the Heart of Dixie are stories, legends, and jokes that are told and retold by political insiders, journalists, and scholars who follow the goings-on in Washington and Montgomery. In Alabama, it seems, politics is not only a blood sport but high entertainment. There could be no better guide to this colorful history than political columnist and commentator Steve Flowers.
Book Synopsis Serpents, Goats and Turkeys by : David Laws
Download or read book Serpents, Goats and Turkeys written by David Laws and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive, insider history of the often turbulent political relationship between the Liberals and Labour. Natural allies or fierce competitors? For the past century, Britain's two major centre-left parties have co-existed in sometimes harmonious but more often fraught duopoly, from the 1903 agreement that a prominent Liberal complained was 'nursing into life a serpent which would sting their party to death' to the 1976–77 pact that gave us the phrase 'turkeys voting for Christmas' and beyond, to the failed negotiations that led to the controversial 2010–15 Lib Dem–Conservative coalition. Charting 100 years of British political history, Serpents, Goats and Turkeys explores the formal and informal arrangements that have existed between the parties, covering electoral deals, support for minority governments, formal pacts and full coalitions. What have been the overlaps of policy and ideology, and where have the parties been most divided? What explains the periods of co-operation but also the unwillingness or inability to work together for any significant time? In the wake of the 2024 'Loveless Landslide', former coalition Cabinet minister David Laws also draws on unpublished records and private diaries from the past thirty years of Lib–Lab wrangling to consider the likely options in the event of a future hung parliament. Should the parties work together? Would they be able to? And what are the prospects for voting reform? The answers to such questions will have major implications for British democracy and the future of our politics.
