Download or read book Emerging Bodies written by Gabriele Klein and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of »worldmaking« is based on the idea that 'the world' is not given, but rather produced through language, actions, ideas and perception. This collection of essays takes a closer look at various hybrid and disparate worlds related to dance and choreography. Coming from a broad range of different backgrounds and disciplines, the authors inquire into the ways of producing 'dance worlds': through artistic practice, discourse and media, choreographic form and dance material. The essays in this volume critically reflect the predominant topos of dance as something fleeting and ephemeral - an embodiment of the Other in modernity. Moreover, they demonstrate that there is more than just one universal »world of dance«, but rather a multitude of interrelated dance worlds with more emerging every day.
Book Synopsis Traces of the Ramayana and Mahabharata in Javanese and Malay Literature by : Ding Choo Ming
Download or read book Traces of the Ramayana and Mahabharata in Javanese and Malay Literature written by Ding Choo Ming and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local renderings of the two Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata in Malay and Javanese literature have existed since around the ninth and tenth centuries. In the following centuries new versions were created alongside the old ones, and these opened up interesting new directions. They questioned the views of previous versions and laid different accents, in a continuous process of modernization and adaptation, successfully satisfying the curiosity of their audiences for more than a thousand years. Much of this history is still unclear. For a long time, scholarly research made little progress, due to its preoccupation with problems of origin. The present volume, going beyond identifying sources, analyses the socio-literary contexts and ideological foundations of seemingly similar contents and concepts in different periods; it examines the literary functions of borrowing and intertextual referencing, and calls upon the visual arts to illustrate the independent character of the epic tradition in Southeast Asia.

Book Synopsis Turkey, Greece, and the "Borders" of Europe by : Douglas Reynolds
Download or read book Turkey, Greece, and the "Borders" of Europe written by Douglas Reynolds and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Turkey has long aspired to join Europe both politically and culturally. However, its attempts to do so have been met with scepticism, and there is no unequivocal answer to the question of whether or not Turkey is accepted and viewed as European. This question is of particular interest in the case of Germany, the engine of the European Union’s economy which is not only home to millions of Turkish immigrants, but also has a history of cooperation with Turkey unique among European countries. With its analysis of West German prestige newspapers printed between 1950 and 1975, this study looks into how Germans viewed Turkey from a cultural and political perspective during a critical period of Turkish integration with the West and Europe, and compares this with perceptions of Greece, whose path to Europe was far less problematic by virtue of its classical legacy and Christian heritage.

Book excerpt: Compared to other medieval philologies, the particular nature of the literature of the North, and in particular of Iceland, has always meant that the study of Old Norse languages must be interdisciplinary and rely on methodical variety. This volume, published on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the Munich old Norse scholar, Kurt Schier, contains some three dozen studies on the mythology, history of religion, literature and poetry of the North, as well as runic and onomastic studies, and so reflects the broad thematic spectrum of modern old Nordic studies.
