Flach presents Kant’s conception of freedom as well as its potential for understanding what it means to be human. Krijnen presents Hegel’s conception of freedom and shows that Kant’s conception underestimates an essential feature of freedom. The contributions of other authors assess the results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the results of the Groundwork and the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant finally published his system of moral philosophy in two volumes in 1797. By then, he had been planning to write a Metaphysics of Morals for three decades; but only the title remained unchanged while the basic principles of his theoretical and practical philosophy changed dramatically. While for many years academic moral philosophy focused mainly on Kant’s earlier ethical treatises, there has recently been much interest in this later and perhaps more mature work on moral philosophy, particularly the ethical part of the Metaphysics of Morals, the “Metaphysical Principles of the Doctrine of Virtue” or “Tugendlehre”. The present volume responds to these demands. Following a series of research workshops, 18 scholars from Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States provide a seamless commentary on the “Doctrine of Virtue”, discussing topics such as suicide, truthfulness, moral perfection, beneficence, gratitude, sympathy, respect and friendship as well as Kant’s moral psychology, philosophy of action and theory of moral education. This book will be an invaluable resource for moral philosophers and Kant scholars alike.
Book Synopsis Metaphysics of Morals by : Immanuel Kant
Download or read book Metaphysics of Morals written by Immanuel Kant and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on 1964-01-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Kant's 1797 The Metaphysics of Morals into modern American English with the original German manuscript in the back for reference. This is Volume XII in the Complete Works of Immanuel Kant published by Newcomb Livraria Press This is not to be confused with his early 1785 work Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, which is a different book. In keeping with the grounded, practical themes of his later works, the metaphysician of Prussia’s Die Metaphysik der Sitten focuses on law, government regulation and virtue. Law is the inevitable end of Reason, and as such, is rooted in a priori principles native to the soul but not external experience, in other words, metaphysical. The imperative of virtue relies on inner compulsion, while the imperative of legality relies on an external compulsion. In his lifelong rage against the Empiricism of David Hume, Kant here builds a positive framework devoid of polemics. Kant’s “Doctrine of Right” would inspire Hegel’s 1820 Philosophy of Right, where he would develop a more robust legal theory and a more restrictive social contract.

Book Synopsis Join, or Die – Philosophical Foundations of Federalism by : Dietmar Heidemann
Download or read book Join, or Die – Philosophical Foundations of Federalism written by Dietmar Heidemann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-08-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on federalism is rarely concerned with its philosophical foundations. However, arguments on why and how best to organise a plurality of states in a multilevel political order have first been discussed by philosophers and continue to inspire contemporary reasoning on international and supranational relations not only in political philosophy. This book offers a unique overview of the philosophical foundations of federalism from both a historical and a systematic perspective. The analyses proposed by renowned scholars from the US and from several European countries cover classic writers such as Hobbes and the authors of the Federalist Papers, Kant and Rawls, and range from anthropological justifications of federal orders to contemporary problems of EU constitutionalism, the principle of subsidiarity and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The book is of relevance to anyone interested in philosophical justifications of federalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1965. This study deals with the history of political thought in Germany from 1789 to 1815. It is the story of a nation awaking from a long sleep, commencing to think for itself, to modernize its institutions, to formulate its ideas of the pattern of society and the duties of the State. Modern German literature begins with Klopstock and Lessing. German political thinking comes even later, for it is the child of the French Revolution.
