The emphasis is on Judaism, rather than on Jewish studies more broadly.

Book Synopsis Parenthesis in Biblical Hebrew by : Tamar Zewi
Download or read book Parenthesis in Biblical Hebrew written by Tamar Zewi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenthesis in Biblical Hebrew has never been examined as an autonomous independent topic. Scholarly references to parenthetical units or parenthetical techniques in Biblical Hebrew are usually scarce and short or entirely absent. This monograph fills this gap by offering a comprehensive description of parenthetical clauses and parenthetical words and phrases in Biblical Hebrew, through integration of several research disciplines and scholarly approaches: linguistics, discourse studies, text linguistics, textual philology, comparative Semitics, Bible translations, and literature. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the linguistic aspects of parenthesis, the identification and definition of which are particularly elusive.

Book Synopsis Translation Technique in the Peshitta to Jeremiah by : Gillian Greenberg
Download or read book Translation Technique in the Peshitta to Jeremiah written by Gillian Greenberg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis of translation technique, defining and measuring areas of literalness and of freedom, and discussing the evident acceptability of a non-literal approach, in both the original translation and later editorial work, to relevant communities. Because the Book of Jeremiah is so long, a quantitative analysis was valuable, showing: preservation of the sense of the Vorlage; freedom in selection of lexical equivalents even for important words such as "sin" and in making numerous additions in pursuit of precision; and a similar approach by later editors. Passages which are not represented in the translation despite their presence in the Hebrew Bible, and sometimes also in the Septuagint, are analysed, showing their value in illumination both the development of the Hebrew Bible itself from a number of earlier texts, and the precise wording of the text from which the Syriac translator worked. The strategies adopted to cope with the translation of particulary difficult Hebrew are analysed: these include taking guidance from the Septuagint, from other parts of the Hebrew Bible, and guesswork. Apart from its value to Peshitta scholars and Syriac specialists, the book is useful to biblical scholars and textual critics in general.

Book Synopsis An Annotated Guide to Biblical Resources for Ministry by : David R. Bauer
Download or read book An Annotated Guide to Biblical Resources for Ministry written by David R. Bauer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Annotated Guide to Biblical Resources for Ministry evaluates over 2,000 books that were chosen because of their usefulness for the theological interpretation of the Bible within the context of the faith of the church, significance in the history of interpretation, and representation of evangelical scholarship. This is one of those rare bibliographic guides that every student of religion, seminarian, and minister will want to have on his or her bookshelf. The focus of this guide is on biblical studies. It contains entries on 2,200 books written by 1,300 scholars. Annotations describe and evaluate books that are highly recommended. Virtually every topic in biblical studies is noted: commentaries on each book of the Bible; biblical histories, theologies, and ethics; books on the canon, archaeology, early Judaism, and interpretive methods; and technical books such as grammars, concordances, Bible dictionaries, and atlases. The great strength of this guide is not only that it provides the reader with a wealth of information but also that the format it follows is eminently reader-friendly. The Guide is invaluable for assisting the student, seminarian, or minister in building a personal library. I highly recommend it!
