Book excerpt: The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area in prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.

Book excerpt: “Echoing Events” questions the perpetuation, actualization, and canonization of national narratives in English and Dutch history textbooks, wide-reaching media that tendentially inspire a sense of meaning, memory, and thus also identity. The longitudinal study begins in the 1920s, when the League of Nations launched several initiatives to reduce strong nationalistic visions in textbooks, and ends in the new millennium with the revival of national narratives in both countries. The analysis shows how and why textbook authors have narrated different histories – which vary in terms of context, epoch, and place – as ‘echoing events’ by using recurring plots and the same combinations of historical analogies. This innovative and original study thus investigates from a new angle the resistance of national narratives to change.
Book Synopsis Pirates and Privateers from the Low Countries, C.1500-C.1810 by : Alex Ritsema
Download or read book Pirates and Privateers from the Low Countries, C.1500-C.1810 written by Alex Ritsema and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-06-29 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In novels, cartoons and films, "the" pirate had a wooden leg, a parrot on one of his shoulders, a patch before one of his eyes and buried his treasures on remote shores or islands... This book is not about fictional pirates but about real ones but their stories are equally spectacular. Some of them were not "pirates" but "privateers" equipped with a "letter of marque", an official license to attack enemies in times of war. Among other Dutch, Frisian and Flemish freebooters, this book includes: Grutte Pier, a folk hero defending the Frisian freedom against the Hollanders around 1520; the "Sea-Beggars" and their decisive role in the War of Dutch Independence (1568-1648); the Dunkirk raiders harassing merchant vessels from Amsterdam; adventurers joining the legendary pirates of Barbary or the Caribbean. This book not only deals with the freebooters themselves but also with their victims and foes, as well as corrupt shipowners and corrupt judges of Prize Courts.
Book Synopsis Revolt in the Netherlands by : Anton van der Lem
Download or read book Revolt in the Netherlands written by Anton van der Lem and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1568, the Seventeen Provinces in the Netherlands rebelled against the absolutist rule of the king of Spain. A confederation of duchies, counties, and lordships, the Provinces demanded the right of self-determination, the freedom of conscience and religion, and the right to be represented in government. Their long struggle for liberty and the subsequent rise of the Dutch Republic was a decisive episode in world history and an important step on the path to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And yet, it is a period in history we rarely discuss. In his compelling retelling of the conflict, Anton van der Lem explores the main issues at stake on both sides of the struggle and why it took eighty years to achieve peace. He recounts in vivid detail the roles of the key protagonists, the decisive battles, and the war’s major turning points, from the Spanish governor’s Council of Blood to the Twelve Years Truce, while all the time unraveling the shifting political, religious, and military alliances that would entangle the foreign powers of France, Italy, and England. Featuring striking, rarely seen illustrations, this is a timely and balanced account of one of the most historically important conflicts of the early modern period.
