Thales und Anaximenes liefern schliesslich nur Bausteine fur die vier Elemente des Empedokles; Anaxib mandros aber liefert mit seinem Gegensatz des Unbegrenzten und Formierten dem platonischen Dualismus die eine Seite seiner Grundlagen und muss uns dadurch wichtiger als seine Genossen erscheinen. Allerdings wird dasjenige, worin Anaximandros das eigentlich Seiende gesucht hatte, bei Platon zum Nichtseienden: bei Anaximandros ist der beharrende substantielle Sto ' der Grundgedanke, dem nur die Unbestimmtheit als Attribut na haftet, bei Platon aber wird der des Unbegrenzten zum Substantivum, ohne dass von einem physischen Stoff bei ihm die Rede ware. Und erst Aristoteles kehrt dieses Verhaltnis wieder um, greift also so zu sagen uber Platon auf Anaximandros zuruck. Erst jetzt kommen wir zu den eigentlichen Metaphysikern. Die nicht aus der sinnlichen Anschauung der gegebenen naturlichen Elemente, sondern aus kategorialen Begriffen ein vertieftes Verb standnis der Welt zu' gewinnen hoffen. Den Ubergang bildet Pythagoras, der die Welt zwar nicht mehr aus sinnlich-naturlichen, sondern aus begrfi'lichen, aber doch noch nicht aus rein metaphysischen, sondern aus mathematischen, speciell arithmetischen Bestimmungen zu konstruieren sucht, dem sich aber unter der Hand bereits die mathematischen in metao physische Bestimmungen umwandeln.
