Book excerpt: Renowned German social historian Heide Wunder refers to the cosmic image contained in the 1578 Book of Marital Discipline that characterizes the relationship between husband and wife. Today, "He is the sun, she is the moon" might be interpreted as a hierarchy of dominance and subordination. At the time it was used, however, sun and moon reflected the different but equal status of husband and wife. Wunder shows how the history of women and the history of gender relations can provide crucial insights into how societies organize themselves and provide resources for political action. She observes actual circumstances as well as the normative rules that were supposed to guide women's lives. We learn what skills were necessary to take charge of households, what people ate, how they furnished their homes, what birth control measures were available, what role women played in peasant protest. Wunder finds that, in addition to the history of losses and setbacks for women observed by so many current interpreters, there is a history of gains as well. The regency of noble women was normal, as was the shared responsibility of wife and husband in a peasant household, an artisan's workshop, or a merchant's business. Using sources as diverse as memoirs, wedding and funeral sermons, novels, and chronicles, and including a wealth of demographic information, Wunder reveals a surprising new image of early modern women and provides a richer interpretation of early modern Europe.

For most of the religions of the world, women are a problem. From time immemorial they have been subordinate to men, second class in the family, politics and business with limited rights and even limited participation in worship. It is not only in Christianity that equal rights for women has been a scandalously neglected issue. By an examination of the history of women in Christianity, Kung points to the scandals of the past. The prohibition of women servers at Mass and of the ordination of women to the diaconate and the priesthood are symptomatic of a male dominated Church, which takes a consistently 'negative' attitude towards contraception, abortion and divorce. Roman Catholic Canon Law is androcentric and male dominated. From his position of intellectual freedom, as an independent Professor at the University of Tubingen, Küng is free to analyse the mistakes of the past and to sketch out a new theology of Women in the Church. This is not stridently feminist but sees the role of women as being vital for the development of the Church as an institution and for preaching the Christian Gospel.

It goes far toward filling a major gap in literary history by recovering for a wide audience the works of women whoøwere as famous during their lifetime as Wieland, Schiller, and Goethe. Like those men, they wrote in the early modern period spanning the transition from early Enlightenment to Romanticism. Edited by Jeannine Blackwell and Susanne Zantop, this collection assembles little-known writings by fifteen authors from various social classes, religious backgrounds, and political persuasions. They include the forgotten pietist theologian Johanna Eleonore Petersen, the radical social reformer Bettina von Arnim, the outspoken peasant's daughter Anna Luisa Karsch, the aristocrats Annette von Droste-H_lshoff and Karoline von G_nderrode, and the conservative monarchist Sophie von La Roche, among others. Their autobriographies and letters, "moral" and not so moral tales, lyrical and protest poems, plays, and fairy tales deal with religious crisis, family conflict, and harmony, mothers and daughters, wise women, romance and pain and the healing power of love, self-understanding, escape, and the magical and humorous. Book excerpt: Frankfurt am Main, in common with other imperial German cities, enjoyed a large degree of legal autonomy during the early modern period, and produced a unique and rich body of criminal archives. In particular, Frankfurt’s Strafenbuch, which records all criminal sentences between 1562 and 1696, provides a fascinating insight into contemporary penal trends. Drawing on this and other rich resources, Dr. Boes reveals shifting and fluid attitudes towards crime and punishment and how these were conditioned by issues of gender, class, and social standing within the city’s establishment. She attributes a significant role in this process to the steady proliferation of municipal advocates, jurists trained in Roman Law, who wielded growing legal and penal prerogatives. Over the course of the book, it is demonstrated how the courts took an increasingly hard line with select groups of people accused of criminal behavior, and the open manner with which advocates exercised cultural, religious, racial, gender, and sexual-orientation repressions. Parallel with this, however, is identified a trend of marked leniency towards soldiers who enjoyed an increasingly privileged place within the judicial system. In light of this discrepancy between the treatment of civilians and soldiers, the advocates’ actions highlight the emergence and spread of a distinct military judicial culture and Frankfurt’s city council’s contribution to the quasi-militarization of a civilian court. By highlighting the polarized and changing ways the courts dealt with civilian and military criminals, a fuller picture is presented not just of Frankfurt’s sentencing and penal practices, but of broader attitudes within early modern Germany to issues of social position and cultural identity.

Sein Ziel ist es, antike Ethnographie, die Gender-Perspektive und die aktuelle methodologische Diskussion miteinander in Verbindung zu bringen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde, getragen von den Mitarbeiterinnen an dem genannten FWF Projekt, vom 5.-8. 3. 2003 an der Universität Innsbruck ein Workshop mit dem Titel Frauenbild und Geschlechterrollen bei antiken Autoren der römischen Kaiserzeit veranstaltet, bei dem mehrere Fragestellungen behandelt wurden. Die Hauptintention der Workshops bestand darin, die theoretische Methoden-Diskussion der "Postmoderne", aber auch die mit dieser Diskussion eng verknüpfte theoretische Diskussion des Feminismus in direkte Verbindung mit der Praxis der täglichen Forschungsarbeit zu bringen. Weil es eine der das Projekt leitenden Thesen ist, dass die Eigenständigkeit eines Autor bzw. seines Textes durch den synchronen und diachronen Vergleich eruierbar und nicht bloss als Teil eines 'Diskurses' wahrzunehmen ist, wurden derartige Studien von den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern erwartet. Der vorliegende Band bietet die auf der Basis der und der anschliessenden Diskussionen formulierten Beiträge. Der chronologische Schwerpunkt liegt vor allem auf der römischen Kaiserzeit. Im ganzen erfassen die Beiträge jedoch einen Zeitraum vom 5. Jh. v. Chr. bis ins 6. Jh. Das so chronologisch erfasste Spektrum wird in einer systematischen Gliederung dargeboten. Auf eine methodologisch orientierte Einleitung (C. Ulf, K. Schnegg) folgt ein erster Abschnitt, in dem sich 5 Beiträge mit den Grundlagen und Formen der Texte und der Textlektüre befassen. Die gewählten Beispiele reichen von Augustinus über die archäologische Beispiele bis zum modernen Film. Im zweiten Abschnitt steht die Frage Historische Realität(en) im Text im Mittelpunkt der 7 Artikel. Attische Demokratie, die augusteische Progaganda und Autoren von Cornelius Nepos bis zu Synesios von Kyrene werden behandelt. Im dritten und letzten Abschnitt Textebenen und Bilder der Geschlechter kommt der ethnographische Aspekt ebenso zur Sprache wie die Perspektive einzelner Autoren von Tacitus bis zu Ennodius. Der Band benennt verschiedene Betrachtungsweisen und Zugangsmöglichkeiten zu den Texten, indem der als legitim hervorgehobene Blick auf die historischen Realitäten von jenem auf die Textebenen und die damit verknüpften Vorstellungen der Autoren bzw. der Texte bewusst separiert wird.
