Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany at Bay Readers of this book will find in its pages a clear and logical exposition Showing the origin of this great War and the causes which, through a period of wellnigh a century, gradually led up to it. Unlike many other books on the same subject, it is written by a soldier, who brings a calm and trained mind to the determination Of the strategical issues, although Of course I do not commit myself to agreement with every View expressed. Speaking personally, I am naturally gratified that one who is a deep student of war should find himself able to write in such terms of my work as a General. The more so that he associates my name with that of the great French Marshal, whose military fame will assuredly earn for him undying glory when the whole history Of this war is laid bare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Britain at Bay "I do not believe in the perfection of the British constitution as an instrument of war ... it is evident that there is something in your machinery that is wrong." These were the words of the late Marquis of Salisbury, speaking as Prime Minister in his place in the House of Lords on the 30th of January 1900. They amounted to a declaration by the British Government that it could not govern, for the first business of a Government is to be able to defend the State of which it has charge, that is, to carry on war. Strange to say, the people of England were undisturbed by so striking an admission of national failure. On the 16th of March 1909 came a new declaration from another Prime Minister. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Woman's Plea for Germany A stirring wind from the sea, after days of hot breaths out of the West, made us sniff expectantly. It was Hook Creek of the salt marshes, its quiet winding tidal stream from Jamaica Bay an old friend, and the hospitable inn of proved excellence. The man deposited his green corn and I a bunch of war news, at which he frowned, for he knew I was giving aid and comfort to the enemy, since he himself, like so many other deluded journalists in these benighted States, upholds the Allies in their three-to-one unholy war. Not that I mind France so much, foolish as she is to hang on through half a century to her revanche, when Alsace and Lorraine were Teuton properties long before they were French; or Russia, with a bizarre charm all her own, not the least of which is a virility only a shade less intense than that of Prussia itself, and besides she is in real need of a south water; but England, always a blooming hypocrite, forever prating of her honor when she's out simply for N o. 1, and now stirring up the dark races against the white; England, eaten up with jealousy in her declining power, who will pro long the war indefinitely if not restrained, is beyond redemption. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Captive on a German Raider The chart at noon on the twenty-sixth marked five hundred and eight miles from Colombo, two thousand, nine hundred and twelve to Delagoa Bay, and one hundred and ninety to the Equator; only position, not the course, being marked after the ship left Co lombo. Most of the passengers had, as usual, either dozed on the deck or in their cabins after tiflin, my wife and I being in deck chairs on the port side. When I woke up at one forty-five I saw far off on the horizon on the port bow, smoke from a steamer. I was the only person awake on the deck at the time, and I believe no other passenger had seen the smoke. It was so far away that it was impossible to tell whether we were meeting or overtak ing the ship. Immediately thoughts of a raider sprang to my mind, though I did not know one was out. It is generally under stood that instructions to Captains in these times are to suspect every vessel seen at sea. Book excerpt: A leading American journalist travels to Nazi Germany in December 1939, arriving in wartime Germany where all the lights are blacked out in preparation for an English or French bombing campaign. T. Lothrop Stoddard's provocatively-titled book refers to the eerie experience he felt of first encountering this total blackout. Into the Darkness was the product of an assignment by the North American Newspaper Alliance company in which Stoddard was detailed to report on wartime conditions in Nazi Germany-at a time before the US became involved in the war. Stoddard was not unknown in Germany. Due to his leading work in the areas of racial history, racial science and eugenic in America, he was granted unprecedented access to the inner workings of the National Socialist government and provided the first-and possibly only-accurate, unbiased account of German racial policy ever written by a non-German writer. Stoddard was granted personal interviews with Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler, Robert Ley, Wilhelm Frick, Walter Darre, Eugen Fischer, Fritz Lenz, and Hans F. K. Gunther, and many other Nazi leaders. In addition, Stoddard was allowed to attend the workings of a German Eugenics court-the only such account ever to reach the rest of Europe and America. Among the many other insights in this unique book: - The trials and tribulations of civilian Germans at war; - The real attitude of Germans to the war; - The German Labor Front, the Winter Help, the Hitler Youth and women in the Third Reich; - The economic policies of the Third Reich; - The treatment of Jews inside Nazi Germany; and much more besides. Stoddard was a renowned and well-respected journalist when he made this trip and subsequent report, because it recounts accurately the events of the time, his name-not to mention his report-has all but disappeared from today's "official" history concerning that period. This edition has been completely reset and contains new illustrations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Perry at Put in Bay: Echoes of the War of 1812 The French, mindful of the old franco-american Treaty of Alliance and resentful because the United States now refused them aid, likewise interfered with American shipping. Quasi-war between France and the United States ensued from 1798 to 1800 and though peace was preserved outwardly, American commerce continued to suffer from both French and British outrages as England issued orders-in-council de signed to blockade France, and as Napoleon responded with Decrees intended to prevent neutral shipping from carrying aid to England. By 1812, the situation was not unlike that in 1917 when Britain with her navy and Germany with her submarines had American commerce between the hammer and the anvil. According to estimates of President Madison, between November 1807 and July 1812, the British seized 389 vessels and the French 558. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sainte Seductre: An Inner View of the Boche at Bay The text of this edition has been freely revised to secure for it a fluency, naturalness, and colloquial reality likely to commend its vital message to the closer attention of American readers. With this same end in view the prefatory pages immediately following were included. They represent an attempt - and one of such length that some editorial explanation seems necessary - to accomplish three things: (a) To prepare a sound basis for the point of view certain to be acquired by the reader of this vivid presentation of conditions within Imperial Germany to-day; (b) to address specifically to public opinion in the United States the warning so subtly sounded by the author throughout his intensely gripping narrative; and (c) to crystallize and amplify the most astounding and the distinctly American elements of that warning. To present an introductory digest, of course, is not the intention, the authors manner of arraignment being infinitely more compelling than any mere prosaic recitation of alarm. To emphasize further this cardinal appeal to America recognized in the text, there has been carefully eliminated all foreign words and exclamatory phrases. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations and Reflections Made in the Course of a Journey Through France, Italy, and Germany, Vol. 2 of 2 The weather was quiet then, and we had no notion of passing such a horrible night; but an hour after dark, a storm came on, which was really dreadful to endure; or even look upon: the blue lightning, whose colour shewed the nature of the original minerals from which she drew her existence, shone round us in a broad expanse from time to time, and sudden darkness followed n an instant: no object then but the fiery river could be seen, till another flash discovered the waves tossing and breaking, at a height I never saw before. Nothing sure was ever more sublime or awful than our entrance into Naples at the dead hour we arrived, when not a whisper was to be heard in the streets, and not a glimpse of light was left to guide us, except the small lap hung now and then at a high window before a favourite image of the Virgin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Destiny of Walfish Bay Ten months ago the author of these sketches made a rapid tour through German South-West Africa to Walfish Bay just before accompanying the fifty farmers to Europe. He had long wished to see that western country for two reasons. In the first place, his studies in Dry-Farming had led him to believe that there was a great future both for the Agriculturist and for the Stockman in these little known regions. Secondly, the development of the Western Transvaal, the Western Free State, the Cape North-West, Gordonia, Bechuanaland, and Southern Rhodesia meant that a Port must be found for the shipment of farm produce to the European markets. That Port, he was convinced, must be Walfish Bay. The Governor of German South-West Africa hearing that the writer wished to pursue agricultural investigations on these Western Dry Lands, sent him a cordial invitation to travel throughout the Protectorate. Thus it happened that although the writer made his journey and pursued his studies as a private individual, at his own cost, he was afforded many facilities and was received with much courtesy by the German authorities. It is hardly necessary to add that the peaceful condition of the Country at that moment did not seem to presage in any way the gigantic conflict in which our Empire is now engaged. Naturally, some of the opinions set forth will have to be revised in the light of the present war; but the author believes it best to leave his expressions unaltered lest the freshness of his modest Diary be sacrificed by a more prosaic review.
