This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Trade and the War, Commercial and Industrial Conditions, in War Time and the Future Outlook Sir: There is submitted herewith a report on German trade and the war, by Chauncey Depew Snowv Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, and J. J. Krai, of the research division of the Bureau. This report takes up the question of the foreign trade of Germany where " German Foreign-Trade Organization," Miscellaneous Series No. 57, issued in 1917, left off. It discusses industrial and commercial conditions in Germany since the outbreak of the war, covering the manufacturing industries, the supplies of raw materials, the development of substitute materials, labor, combination and syndication of industry, and present markets. It contains some information concerning transportation conditions, the railroads, rivers and canals, and ocean shipping. This report also touches briefly on some of the broader subjects of Germany's commercial aims in going to war, and aspirations and preparations for the period after the war. Whereas in the previous report, "German Foreign-Trade Organization," detailed statistical and other information was given concerning the export trade, in the present report special attention is devoted to the subject of raw materials and the import trade. There are many topics here touched on which suggest the possibilities of future detailed treatment and very extensive research; for example, such topics as the effect of the war on the merchant shipping of Germany, and the extent of the loss to the German export trade by liquidation of German concerns in foreign countries. The facilities for such research and detailed treatment are not now available. It is realized that some of the topics discussed are treated m a fragmentary fashion, and that the discussion of some topics, such as plans and preparations for the future, are little more than a reproduction of the published views of some of the German economists and other men in public life. No apology is needed for the presentation of the material in its present form. Mr. Snow and Mr. Krai have followed such important newspapers, periodicals, and books published in Germany and all the other European countries as have been available in the Department. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally appearing at the same time as the pacifist novel All Quiet on the Western Front, this powerful collection provides a glimpse into the hearts and minds of an enemy that had been thoroughly demonized by the Allied press. Composed by German students who had left their university studies in order to participate in World War I, these letters reveal the struggles and hardships that all soldiers face. The stark brutality and surrealism of war are revealed as young men from Germany describe their bitter combat and occasional camaraderie with soldiers from many nations, including France, Great Britain, and Russia. Like its companion volume, War Letters of Fallen Englishmen, these letters were carefully selected for their depth of perception, the intensity of their descriptions, and their messages to future generations. "Should these letters help towards the establishment of justice and better understanding between nations," the editor reflects in his introduction, "their deaths will not have been in vain." This edition contains a new foreword by the distinguished World War I historian Jay Winter.

Book excerpt: Although the political and military aspects of great-power diplomacy in Eastern Europe during the interwar period have been studied extensively, the economic aspects have been relatively neglected. Drawing on documentary material that has only recently been made available, David Kaiser redresses the balance in his discussion of the expansion of German trade with Eastern Europe during the 1930s and the British and French failure to respond to it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In From Old Regime to Industrial State, Richard H. Tilly and Michael Kopsidis question established thinking about Germany’s industrialization. While some hold that Germany experienced a sudden breakthrough to industrialization, the authors instead consider a long view, incorporating market demand, agricultural advances, and regional variations in industrial innovativeness, customs, and governance. They begin their assessment earlier than previous studies to show how the 18th-century emergence of international trade and the accumulation of capital by merchants fed commercial expansion and innovation. This book provides the history behind the modern German economic juggernaut.
