As a symbol of Polish national identity and the religious faith of approximately two-thirds of the Polish population, the Roman Catholic church was an obvious target of the Nazi regime's policies of ethnic, racial, and cultural Germanization in occupied Poland. Jonathan Huener reveals in The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupation that the persecution of the church in the Reichsgau Wartheland, a region of Poland annexed to Nazi Germany, was more brutal than anywhere else in Nazi-occupied Poland, or Nazi-occupied Europe. Here Catholics witnessed the execution of priests, the incarceration of hundreds of clergymen and nuns in prisons and concentration camps, the closure of churches, the destruction and confiscation of church property, and countless restrictions on public expression of the Catholic faith. Huener also illustrates how the Nazi elite viewed this area as a testing ground for anti-church policies to be launched in the Reich after the successful completion of the war. Aid given to persecuted Jews included protests against official antisemitism, intervention with authorities, sermons calling on congregations to help Jews, providing Jews with Christian identity papers, and hiding Jews. Stresses that the Churches did not abandon their anti-Judaic doctrines during the Holocaust, and many of the rescuers were known as antisemites before the war. Some of the clerics approved the early anti-Jewish measures of the occupiers or of the pro-Nazi governments, but protested when the deportations began. Examines the motives of the clerical rescuers, which involved compassion and a necessity to help the persecuted in the spirit of the parable of the Good Samaritan, as well as a deep respect for Jews and Judaism, which was especially typical of Protestants. Protestants in countries where they were a small and persecuted minority rendered more help to Jews during the Holocaust than the dominant Catholic or Orthodox populations. After World War II the Catholic and Protestant Churches acknowledged a measure of responsibility for the genocide of the Jews.

Between 1942 and 1943, thousands of Jews escaped the fate of German death camps in Poland. As they sought refuge in the Polish countryside, the Nazi death machine organized what they called Judenjagd, meaning hunt for the Jews. As a result of the Judenjagd, few of those who escaped the death camps would survive to see liberation. As Jan Grabowski’s penetrating microhistory reveals, the majority of the Jews in hiding perished as a consequence of betrayal by their Polish neighbors. But Zofia Dudzik successfully distracted them, and she and her husband insisted the boys stay despite the danger to their own family. Through some twenty stories like these, Tammeus and Cukierkorn show that even in an atmosphere of unimaginable malevolence, individuals can decide to act in civilized ways. Some rescuers had antisemitic feelings but acted because they knew and liked individual Jews. In many cases, the rescuers were simply helping friends or business associates. The accounts include the perspectives of men and women, city and rural residents, clergy and laypersons—even children who witnessed their parents’ efforts.
