Book excerpt: This book explores the construct 'negotiation' from a linguistic, cultural and organisational perspective in order to understand how a more integrated pedagogical approach to the teaching of L2 negotiation skills to Hiberno-English-speaking adult learners of German might be conceived. On the basis of a corpus of twelve simulated intercultural and intracultural sales negotiations, together with thirty-four qualitative interviews with Irish exporters and a review of sales training, the book investigates the structural and interactional differences and similarities in the conduct of German and Irish sales negotiation and the types of strategic, linguistic and/or cultural problems encountered by Irish sellers negotiating in the L2. The research findings underline the need for increased interdisciplinary collaboration and for a balanced approach to skills development which does not see culture as the sole source of critical incidents in intercultural negotiation.

Book excerpt: The book addresses the question of whether, in an age of internationalisation and globalisation, cultural differences are still relevant to German-Irish corporate relationships? The first three chapters establish the theoretical framework for the analysis by exploring the notion of culture, profiling the business cultures of both countries, and examining existing approaches to the study of parent company-foreign subsidiary relationships. In the following three chapters, using interviews carried out with two sample groups (fifteen German parent companies and fourteen of their Irish operations; seven Irish parent companies and nine of their German operations), the parent companies in both groups are examined to see whether they demonstrate characteristics which are in keeping with their national business cultures. Their foreign operations are then analysed as is the parent company-foreign subsidiary relationship to determine whether any parent company influences are visible. The general approaches adopted by the two groups of parent companies to their foreign operations are compared and contrasted. Finally differences in national attitudes and values are identified and their impact assessed.

In the present volume, this imbalance is addressed by providing much-needed empirical data on language use in Ireland in the private, official and public spheres and also by examining the use of Irish English as a reflection of socio-cultural norms of interaction. The contributions cover a wide range of pragmatic phenomena and draw on a number of frameworks of analysis. Despite the wide scope of topics and methodologies, a relatively coherent picture of conventions of language use in Ireland emerges. Indirectness and heterogeneity on the formal level are, for instance, shown to be features of Irish English.
